Michelle's Absolutely Favourite Things

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

I'm so excited to share with you today some of Michelle Adams' 'Absolutely Favourite Things'. Michelle is certainly a very talented young woman and is the founder of Rubie Green an eco-friendly textile company based in New York. Michelle's fabrics are fast becoming a favourite by designers both here and in America. I absolutely adore her fabrics and currently have two chairs covered in her East Village {raspberry chevron design} in my front window at Black & Spiro. Some of my other favourites are Tillinghurst and Portobello. Her fabrics have been seen in Domino Magazine and featured on blogs worldwide. I certainly think this inspiring woman is someone to watch and I am just so thrilled to be able to share with you today some of her most favourite things!!

"While rounding up my favorite things to shoot, I realized that many things make me very happy! So I thought it might be fun to show them both laid out flat, and also as a tablescape. I started with my favorite piece of art, which is a vintage Czech movie poster of The Knack (1966). I spotted this beauty on Kate Spade's 'Behind the Curtain' website, and hunted it down at a local vintage movie poster shop! To the right is a framed photo of my grandparents shortly after they got married. It's literally such a great photo that people always ask me whether I left the fake photo insert in my frame! (I have to laugh and explain "no, I do in fact know these people!" haha.) The rest of the pieces all have some significance in my life, such as my Rubie Green fabrics, an issue of Domino where I used to work, a subway map of New York, a small bottle of Stella McCartney perfume (I never leave home without it!), a special note from a friend, etc."

Oh my goodness, I LOVE all of her favourite things too and in actual fact I have some very similar favourite pieces of my own!! Thank you so much for showing us your beautiful things Michelle. If you want to see more you must go and check out her gorgeous blog, M.A. Belle.

'Absolutely Favourite Things' will appear here every Thursday so stay tuned!!

If you haven't already checked out Suzie Anderson's French & Country website - an {Australian} online shop full of all things French and GORGEOUS then you must right now! I love this image which appears on the opening page of her site. It was taken at Hotel Particulier in Aix-en-Provence, France. NB. I have posted about Hotel Particulier previously HERE.

A Pretty Field of Flowers

One of my lovely clients sent me a link to Morgue File today....I think she was trying to help me out with my recent blog block! I loved this field of flowers from Jari's photos! Thanks Bridgett for the link!!

Grant Gibson, Sacramento Street, and a Rant

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

Seeing that we have no gas here in Atlanta, I've had to severely limit my running around. I use very little gas as it is because I live in the heart of the city and I don't drive an SUV. But still, it's chaos here with people spending all of their time driving around and around trying to find gas. And when you do find it, you have to wait in line for HOURS. It's absurd. Absolutely maddening. And on top of that our governor is in Europe and seems to be doing little to solve this mess. Needless to say, I'm staying close to home and to the office knowing that the situation may not improve for another few weeks. (That's the rant.)

So, my shopping and browsing is now limited to the internet. It's not as gratifying as the real thing, but it will have to do. And the timing couldn't have been more perfect to do a little vicarious shopping with
Grant K. Gibson.

I've admired Gibson's work for some time now. The San Francisco designer aces that fresh and clean traditional look with some gusto thrown in for good measure . Recently, Gibson was featured in a
California Home and Design article (Oct. '08) extolling the virtues of the shops of Sacramento Street. He's definitely the one to ask. After all, his design studio is located on Sacramento.

I always make a point to visit the Sacramento St. shops during my twice yearly visits to San Francisco. There is something about that street that is so appealing to me. It's not frenzied nor frenetic but rather low-key and charming. In fact, during my last trip there my sister took me to a very trendy, still rather gritty part of town to visit some hip design stores. I took one step out of the car, assessed the situation, turned on my heel and said "May we please just get back into the car and go to Sacramento Street?" What can I say? I'm a creature of habit- and comfort.

There is legendary shop
Sue Fisher King- one of my favorites for linens (Porthault included), tabletop, and accessories. And of course there's Kendall Wilkinson Home. These too are favorites of Gibson. But another Gibson recommendation is new to me: Ribbonerie. Gibson suggests shopping there for ribbon for pillows or lampshade trim. Who doesn't love a good ribbon and trim shop?

And one more gem-
Birch, a floral shop with a black interior (almost like a retail version of Mrs. Delany's Flowers!) Gibson likes the shop because the black walls make the flowers pop.

So for those of you whose style is being cramped by the gas shortage or those who just want to spend some time looking at beautiful things, visit
Gibson's site and those of the featured shops for a little inspiration.

A few glimpses of Gibson's portfolio.

These are the types of beautiful things you'll find at Sue Fisher King

Black & Spiro Today

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

Here is a little old chair we just had recovered for a client which we received back from our upholsterer today. I couldn't help taking a photo and sharing it with you. This fabric is the same one {in a different colourway} we used to cover the Lulu 2 seater we currently have in the shop. It is certainly a favourite fabric amongst us all at Black & Spiro at the moment! I'm actually considering having a bed head made in it for home....it's those birds which keep luring me in!! Email us for fabric pricing and availability info@blackandspiro.com.au

Whisk Me Away...

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

Yesterday I had to make a quick, over and back trip to Straddie to get the house ready for some tenants arriving. I very nearly didn't come home. The weather was perfect. The waves on the beach were glassy and rolly and I just wanted to escape and hide over there for a few days. But, I came to my senses and came back to work. On the way home I sat in the car on the barge reading some magazines and as I looked out the window this pretty little sailing boat was sailing past. I must say I am thoroughly enjoying the beautiful Spring weather here and I just can't wait to head over to Straddie again for a few days over the school holidays with my special little one. Anyway, enough of my rambling. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. See you next week!!

See You In The Spring...

Image - Jen Gotch

Earlier this week I posted a beautiful image by Jen Gotch which so many of you loved so to end this week I thought I would post another one I am totally in love with. I absolutely adore the collection of things in this photo and in particular I love the white background with the pops of colour. This photo pretty much sums up my own personal style. As most of you know I love to create rooms with an all white backdrop with lots of colour in the accessories and a few quirky pieces and vintage pieces thrown in. I think I need to put this picture on my inspiration board. I do hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and I look forward to sharing lots of absolutely beautiful things with you next week - the first week of Spring here in Australia!!

Hayley & Tracey's Absolutely Favourite Things

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

Here we go with 'Absolutely Favourite Things' Week 3!!

Hayley & Tracey are fellow Brisbane girls who own Porchlight Interiors. They have recently started a blog which is fast becoming one of my favourite daily reads! The girls love styling properties which are going onto the market for sale or just creating beautiful spaces for their clients to live in. The Porchlight blog was most recently mentioned in the Washington Post Blog Watch column and today I'm thrilled to share some of the girl's absolutely favourite things. As there are two creative minds behind Porchlight Interiors I asked them if they could share two vignettes with us and they agreed.

"We had to include a teacup tablescape as we have been enjoying tea parties with our girlfriends for years. We have collected gorgeous vintage teacups, teapots and plates from markets and second hand shops and from our grandmothers. This tablescape is a reflection of great times shared together with good friends.

The coastal tablescape is a reflection of our Queensland lifestyle. We have shown a collection of things we love to use when styling Queensland homes such as this beautiful cluster of hand blown glass tears, recycled Italian glass bottles and this gorgeous handmade antique copper tray (which is covered in tin) from Syria. The shells and the coral add a beautiful natural coastal element."

Well all I can say is I definitely would love to go to a tea party hosted by the Porchlight Girls!! Thanks so much for sharing your favourite things Hayley & Tracey! I can certainly see why you love these beautiful things so much!!

'Absolutely Favourite Things' will appear here every Thursday so stay tuned!!

Go Ahead, Layer on the Beads

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
The downside of design blogs and myriad decorating TV shows is that all the analysis (is there such a thing as a decorating pundit?) may lead us to over-think the whole thing. For example, one phenomenon we've discussed here before is the tendency to hyper-analyze accessories -- are they over-exposed, are they "last Tuesday," does it really matter?

It's no secret that I never seem to tire of beads on statuary (or other art objects) but I can't pretend this is revolutionary or unexpected. Radical or not, the issue doesn't seem to worry some of my favorite tastemakers and editors; they don't think the look is over. Beads are proudly displayed in the Lambertson-Truex residence (Elle Decor, October 2008) and Rubie Green founder, Michelle Adams, recently styled a graceful bust with a pretty necklace for ABT.

Below, of course, the image that started the obsession: a page from Kelly Wearstler's Domicilium Decoratus.

So go ahead. Play with your necklaces. It's a commitment-free, economical way to create a new vignette in your home.
