Petersham Nurseries

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
When I saw this photograph in housemartin a couple of day back, apart from the beautiful nursery the thing that got my attention was the huge 'Urli' a traditional Indian vessel. This got me curious and I read a bit about it online, but then today I pick up one of the old issues of 'Design Today' magazine from my table, and what do I see 'Petersham Nurseries' again. So taking a cue, here I am posting about this breathtakingly beautiful nursery which is an antique store and also a cafe. Francesco and Gael Boglione the owners of Petersham Nurseries in West London have travelled extensively around the world and to India. Which can be seen in these beautiful antiques and memorabilia that they have hand-picked and displayed so well in the nursery.
Raja Ravi Varma prints & Tanjore Paintings are displayed against blinds made of natural fibres.
The cart that is used by Indian Street vendors has been used very charmingly to prop pots.
A traditional bell compliments an exotic orchid plant.
They have some Indian fabric quilts also for sale. Handcrafted stone Buddha.Carved Indian Doors.
Here is a famous brand of Indian cycle- Hero Cycles for cycling around the nursery?:-)

Visually striking but totally functional - that's how Matthew Leverone designs his interiors. With over 25 years experience he creates spaces that reflect his clients' needs and their unique sense of style. His sense of scale, balance, light and colour plays an important role in these spaces. Color Catastrophe

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
This just in from reader Holly:
She got this image in some product literature that a carpet rep brought in and wanted to share it with us.
Can you imagine sitting through a meeting in that conference room? It seems like it would be very agitating. And then the hallway...the complete opposite extreme! Grey upon beige upon taupe?
I concur, this space would not be one I would want to spend any period of time trying to concentrate in. Yikes! It would be fun to see what other horrible color mishaps people can find. Let's start a collection of what not to do with color- send in your best examples and we can vote on the worst!

Truely Postmodern Architecture

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Design Mind

Postmodernism was originally a reaction to modernism. Largely influenced by the Western European disillusionment induced by World War II, postmodernism tends to refer to a cultural, intellectual, or artistic state lacking a clear central hierarchy or organizing principle and embodying extreme complexity, contradiction, ambiguity, diversity, interconnectedness or interreferentiality, in a way that is often indistinguishable from a parody of itself. The home entitled Bunny Lane is what I would call true postmodern architecture. With a mix of style and no central aesthetic principles, it is a home that encompasses two unique homes under the roof of a third. It is wildly unique with lots of contradiction and ambiguity and breaks the boundaries of residential architecture as we knew them to be. Bravo to Architecture & Hygiene for this fabulous design.

Meet Veronica, Before and After

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

I met Veronica on the streets. She started off a little worse for wear. She was homeless when I found her. Outside, the luster had faded, there were quite a few battle scars.....but then that's what life can do, isn't it? I took her home. I thought all it was going to take was a little TLC, right? I thought I could get her back on her feet in no time. But after a couple of weeks (or was it three?) of hard core therapy....after some tough rehab, I did start to wonder if it was all worth it.

But then..... after peeling away the layers of dirt....after scrubbing clean the signs of age...I could see we were getting somewhere. I could see definite signs of improvement. It was time for a brand new coat...or several. A little color to top her off. And Viola! She is ready to face the world again. And she was definitely worth the effort.

There is more about her here.

I'd like to welcome new ::Surroundings:: sponsor Invighting Lighting! Among their many offerings are these spectacular chandeliers. The one above is the same as those that hang in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. I was there only one, in the 7th grade to attend La Boheme and seeing these works of art rise up into the ceiling signaling the start of the performance was a memorable and inspirational experience.

Jelly Jewels

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
I love the description for this product: "a cheerful ode to urethane".
Soft Gems are squishy faux gems, originally used for costume jewelry, but now utilized for interior treatments. How cool is this panel from Philadelphia's Pod Restaurant? Has anyone been here? The site looks very futuristic and artsy.
What I like is the versatility of the product; here it is used for lamp columns.

My question, as a color fanatic, is: are the gem hues customizable to your specific needs? Not that I don't love the orange, pink, yellow and green palette. But what if someone wanted a cool blue palette, or all purple and reds?

How would you use these flexible panels full of colorful orbs?

Pattern Magic Vol. 2

03/19/2008, 17:40 | Original Site: designer's library

Pattern

Alright. Since Lisa's told me that she's "tired of looking at the computer wires" on the previous post (and really, so am I)--I've finally put together a new post. Things have been super busy lately and because of all the work I've been producing over the past month and half, it's given me some carpal tunnel issues. Great. So I've had to limit my computer work, like blog posting.

But anyway, I got this book called Pattern Magic Vol. 2 a few months ago. While I don't plan on making any of these pieces (I don't know how to sew and the wearability of some of the pieces are totally questionable--like the bottom image), I was intrigued by the sculptural and architectural forms of the clothes. Really beautiful pieces.

This is an out & out traditional arrangement. Beautiful green beetle leaves arranged in a circular fashion with festive, cheery yellow marigolds and pink buds giving it that colourful contrast.

In the center is a mini traditional Kerala lamp lit with wicks dipped in oil. Shiny brass diyas complete the outer circle with their festive brightness:-)

Catalog Love: Seeing Red

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid
I just got a couple of new catalogs today, and a few things caught my eye. They happened to be red....you know, like a stop sign... so I just had to stop and stare.

I think I posted this awhile back in the white (which I just ordered for my Dining Room). I thought the red was great too...so here it is! From Wisteria, Coconut Chandelier in Coral, $649.00

Wisteria's Gilded Stool would work almost anywhere. "$219

This little Red Tibetan Side Table is a steal at $89! Also from Wisteria.

Rattan Top Side Table from Wisteria, $289.

Gump's San Francisco came through with some beautiful things. This Red Openwork Chair is a mere $395. A pair on either side of a foyer table perhaps?

This Cathay Console from Gump's is on sale for $499.99.

I love this Chippendale Outdoor Bench. So fun in red! Gump's $995.

These red foo dogs from CB2 are a bit of a change from the turquoise blue we have been seeing so much of lately. Interesting item for CB2! $49.95 for the pair. Polyresin...hmmm.

Skew Barstools from CB2 range in price from $99.95 to $129.00. This color is called "lobster". Also available in white. Hard choice.

Hancock Bookcase from CB2 for $199. The red makes it, I think.

CB2 Briar Wingback Chair. Smashing in red. $699.

Just a quick look. There's more where that came from! Happy hunting.

Tiny Chairs - How cute are these!

04/21/2008, 07:02 | Original Site: ::Surroundings::

Miniature Chairs Set

Dimitra & Bill of Up To You in Toronto sent word of these cute - and tiny - reproductions that they are carrying. There ar four different designer sets (9 chairs in each set,). Designers represented include: Eames, Mackintosh, Mies van der Rohe, Prouve, etc. Each set of nine chairs is $95 and there are a total of 36 chairs available at $12 each.

These are great alternatives to the Vitra chair minis, which I saw at Conrans in Paris a couple of months ago. (I've been waiting for a chance to use these images!)

What is it about tiny things? So cute!

I am particularly fond of viewing photos of Design Public products in action…like folks swinging on a Fatboy Headdemock, or modeling with their Vitra Nelson Clock, or dressing up their OFFI My Pet Lamp. In this case, the “action shot du jour” is of four legged friend Mr. Buddy scratching his little heart out on a Marmalade pet care Sweet Lounge Cat Bed and sitting on a Hepper Wave Pet Bed. Marrakech: Melanie and the Peacock Pavilions Fairygod Artists

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: My Marrakesh
Blog 1 They had come from far away.
They had come from across the sea.
To paint.
To paint Peacock Pavilions.
They leapt up ladders.
They scaled up scaffolding.
They mixed, they measured.
They swirled, they stippled.

From dawn to dusk
And back again.
They filled in the plain.
They colored the white.
Until it was shining
                          and new
                                    and special.

And for this, the Marrakech blogging girl would be forever grateful....

affordable art that?s worth admiring

04/29/2008, 15:15 | Original Site: shelterrific

We recently visited online art store Petaline and were pleased by their selection of affordable art. Most work hovers in the $100 range (and there are plenty of pieces for far less). Best of all, however, is the quality — these aren’t mass-produced mall-store posters but beautiful and engaging original paintings and limited-edition prints. We especially like the rogues’ gallery of giclee prints from Chris Crites — last-century mugshots that he originally painted on paper sacks. Elizabeth Soule’s “Little Zoo” series of photographs are colorful and fun, while paintings by Irene Wood are soothing and serene. See all of Petaline’s affordable art offerings here.

Update: Check out Leah’s expanded post on more of Chris Crites’ work.

Stink Tree

Designed by Dylan Gold, the Stink Tree Coffee table is heavy. Made of solid mdf layers coated in automotive laquer and clear coat, its durable. The one pictured has a walnut veneer, yet the laminate and ultimately the extruded graphic are all customizable. Stink tree can be produced in a range of colors, textures and styles. It's a high impact piece of furniture that can make an otherwise boring room impressive.

Post-Modern Economy

Sale

Just some quick Modern Economy-related updates:

-Congratulations to Hae Min Cho of SF for winning the $150 prize package raffle!

-Thank you to Jane Maynard for posting about the sale on her blog and for taking great pictures of the sale. We brought our camera but forgot the all-essential battery so we didn't have any images from the event.

- And with all the busy-ness preparing for the sale, I didn't realize that tickets went on sale for the Flight of the Conchords concert in SF. And now, the all the tickets are sold out. Not cool.
