Sponsor Love: Welcome, Inviting Lighting

04/25/2008, 19:10 | Original Site: ::Surroundings::

I'd like to welcome new ::Surroundings:: sponsor Invighting Lighting! Among their many offerings are these spectacular chandeliers. The one above is the same as those that hang in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. I was there only one, in the 7th grade to attend La Boheme and seeing these works of art rise up into the ceiling signaling the start of the performance was a memorable and inspirational experience.
Other offerings include:

Please visit Inviting Lighting to view more. I so appreciate them and all my sponsors for their support!

edward and i went to the Interior Design Show 2008 this past saturday like many others and i always say this but next year i'm not going on a "public's" night. man was it crowded! i don't do well in crowds.

i had to work and couldn't make trades night on thursday so a few of my fellow designers and i trecked down to check out the show over the weekend. needless to say, there were many great exhibits, but many of the same faces, same booths and names we all love and know.

if you had a chance to go, i would love to hear what you all thought of the show.

post off: how will you spend your stimulus check?

05/01/2008, 15:40 | Original Site: shelterrific

Coink piggy bank via Modern Nursery.

The economic stimulus checks have started to arrive, putting anywhere from $600-1200 in your bank account. Politics aside, what are you planning to do with the cash? You could get an Eames rocker, buy yourself some art, or do some eBay shopping. Or maybe you’d prefer to put the money aside in case the economy takes an even more serious downturn. So what are your plans for the extra cash? (Thanks to reader patty bolgiano for suggesting this question!)

adventures in beekeeping: flowers on the menu

05/01/2008, 15:30 | Original Site: shelterrific

Our bees are late. They were supposed to arrive last Saturday, but at the last minute we got a call saying they wouldn’t be available until this Saturday… something about the weather still being a touch too cold for them. We used our extra weekend to get our garden ready for our a buzzing friends. When we bought the place, the front garden was a bit of an overgrown mess. A wild vine was consuming the fireplace, and the little patch of dirt was an uneven cluster of flowers and weeds. Chad’s been clearing out the clutter, and this Saturday it was finally ready for some planting. We heard that bees really respond to purple flowers, so we put in some May Night Salvia, Emerald Blue Moss Phlox and my favorite, Provence Lavender. This will keep things pretty and tasty for a month or so. But what we need to do next is plant some autumn blooming flowers, so the bees will be kept busy for months and months. Something yellow, perhaps. Any suggestions? — Angela M.

Bloggers in print

I was reading one of my weekly favorites, Creative Thursday, and just learned that there is a new magazine out called Artful Blogging.
Granted, this post is a bit of departure from my color-centric articles, but I think it's great that bloggers are getting some recognition, and want to support that effort. More and more blogs pop up every day, and it sure is hard to keep track of all the new goodies out there. I can't wait to see if anyone we know gets covered!

Stretched, Curved, Stacked and Unusual Pieces of Furniture

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Home Design| Decorating Home | Interior Design | Furniture Inspiration

These pieces of furniture which aren’t practical shelving space, are called Dust Furniture and are designed by craft artist Vincent Thomas Leman. Vincent’s work has been described as ‘abstract traditional furniture.’ Each piece is essentially a traditional piece of furniture that is stretched, curved, stacked and stepped to fit his design intentions. While wood is the material employed to make his furniture, Vincent considers his actual medium to be ‘traditional furniture.’ The classical root of each piece helps maintain its identity as furniture and keeps the work familiar and approachable despite the unusual shapes. Environmental integrity is also very important to Dust Furniture.

They take care to use biodegradable packing peanuts during the packaging process, to avoid adding to the landfills. They also use waterborne urethane to coat the furniture, which is a gentle, high quality alternative to some very strong chemicals. One of their mottos is “We like to think that we’re changing the world… one piece of fun, American handcrafted furniture at a time.” Finnaly I don’t think that to many people would buy a piece of furniture like this, but at least you saw an interesting piece of furniture today. :) If you would like to buy a piece of furniture like this you can visit Dustfurniture or Vincent Etsy Shop - Via

My Office Sneak Peak

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

A little while ago, well no ages ago I told you all that I was re-decorating my office at Black & Spiro. Well of course it has taken longer than I had anticipated. Client work has had to take priority of course and that meant my office project was put on the back burner!! Well, I am thrilled to say that my little project is almost complete with the last piece (being my desk) due in by the end of this week. I am so happy with the way it's looking and I just couldn't wait to show you some pics of my artwork cluster wall as above. I will of course post pictures of the entire room hopefully by next week but here is a sneak peak. Hope you like it!!

NB. I would like to give credit to artists/crafters Anne Harwell, Samantha Hahn, Variegated Inc. as some of their pieces are included in this wall.

...on the exotic desert sands of Rajasthan. Soak in the local flavour sitting by the bonfire and listening to the folk songs or wake up to call of peacocks just outside your tents...
The concept of Manvar Desert Camp dates back to the 17th century when Mughal Emperor Jehangir known for his luxurious lifestyle used to set up royal tents with all the amenities during their hunting trips. Manvar Desert Camp has 30 tents arranged in a semi circle around a central 'durbar' hall. The central dining area from where stunning sunrises & sunsets can be seen. The interiors of the tents are extremely luxurious with custom designed block print motifs & large teak wood beds. Huge windows with pull up flaps allow the fresh desert breeze to come in and nets to keep insects out:-)

Birthday

02/26/2008, 22:52 | Original Site: designer's library

Terrarium_2
So it was my birthday yesterday.

I got together with my high school girlfriends (Jeannie, Jeanne, and Robie) and my old college roommate, Gertrude, on Sunday for brunch at Universal Cafe. They gave me this beautiful terrarium--and Jeannie was the mastermind behind the design! Really nice work guys.

At Universal Cafe, Gertrude and I also ran into Cindy, our dorm floor friend...years ago. Which reminds me: when we first moved into our dorm room they so kindly put our names on the door: Gertrude and Margaret (that's my real name). Um, we sounded more like ladies pushing 80 in an assisted living facility than college freshman! Oh yeah, folks were knocking on our door JUST wanting to hang out with us.

Dixieplate
And yesterday, I had dinner with my family. And I was surprised to see these paper plates that Marvin bought from the grocery store. I have to say this is pretty cool for Dixie (or whoever makes this), way better than cheesy florals and grapes. Wouldn't this be a nice pattern on fabric?

Dogplacemat
And this. Well, these snazzy placemats (yes, those are dogs wearing bunny ears) were a gift from my mom. Needless to say, I was speechless.

JBL Control Now Speakers

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Home Design| Decorating Home | Interior Design | Furniture Inspiration

JBL just launched a new set of speakers that are uniquely shaped to provide multiple installation options depending upon your space. They are called the Control Now speakers and they are priced at around $250 each ($280 for an outdoor version). The Control NOW speakers feature a quarter-round shape which means the speakers can be mounted between a ceiling and a wall or between two walls, or horizontally/vertically on the bookshelf, a few examples of how these speakers can be used you can see in the image below. The 8-Ohm speakers offer a frequency response from 80 Hz to 30 KHz, and can handle up to 300 Watts at peak, although 150 Watts is a more realistic maximum power. The speakers offer an integrated 2000 Hz crossover that divides the work between the main drivers and the 3/4-inch high-frequency horn, and they feature removable push terminals for connecting speaker cabling. You can buy them from here. - Via - Gearcrave & 71grandos

Portland Coffee Tables

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)
The Oregonian's HGNW has an article today written by Nanine Alexander entitled A Table For Your Coffee, And More. The article has pictures of eight coffee tables that offer "...a place to set items you want within easy reach, a drink, a magazine, the remote control." Alexander doesn't mention my main reason for a coffee table, a place to rest my feet in front of the TV.

The article pictures all the coffee tables that are in the Portland area! Remember that old Johnny Carson routine. Johnny's sidekick, Ed McMahon, would repeat that remark: "All the coffee tables that are in the Portland area!" Johnny would say, "Wrong horses' breath!" So here are a few more that you can find on our showroom floor:
Global Views 8.80818 Surfboard Cocktail Table 60"L x 28"W x 19.5"H Retail Price $1,050.00
Sherrill CTH 310-822 Small Oval Cocktail Table Wooden Occasional Tables W28 x D20 x H21 Retail Price $920.00
Hammary Opus Collection Round Cocktail Table W38 D38 H19 Retail Price $599.00
Moondance 2 x 2 Cocktail Table 2 cushions with Bellagio Crosta leather 44 1/2"W x 44 1/2"D x 15 1/2"H
MSRP: $1,199.00
Hudson Street Warm Cocoa Oval Cocktail Table One stationary shelf 46"W x 28"D x 19"H
MSRP: $929.00
Alexander lists a few things to consider when you buy a coffee or cocktail table. My main hint: If you are going to prop your feet on the table, make sure it doesn't have a raised lip. Otherwise, it will be very uncomfortable on the backs of your feet.

Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery has all these tables on the floor currently. Come in and sit a spell.

Thumbtack Press {gorgeousness}

04/25/2008, 00:33 | Original Site: decor8
Here are some fabulous prints that caught my attention today over at Thumbtack Press, who happens to have a very strong collection of prints online featuring the work of some of my favorite artists. I'm hoping that you'll enjoy them along with me. :)

I adore Bride Diving by Penelope Dullaghan and Gossip by Chris Silas Neal. I always seem to go for images of girls jumping, not because I secretly have thoughts of suicide or anything (he he), more because I am constantly jumping into new things and love the thrill of just getting involved in something I'm passionate about. Also shown above is Bluebell by Lilly Piri and Presagio di Primavera by Gianluca Folě. Drool.

Long Beach Shoreline by Shiho Nakaza, I Miss You Already by Jared Drew Moody, Angel by Irana Douer, and This Flooded World by Sarajo Frieden. Isn't Irana amazing?

The Great Flood Series (set of 3) by Oksana Badrak, Spam One-Liners: Happy Life by Linzie Hunter (fun!), HiFi by Chris Silas Neal, and India Dawn by Oksana Badrak.

And finally, Don't You Leave Me Here by Matthew Woodson. Isn't this a melancholy, tender, emotionally charged glimpse into the life of the modern relationship? We all have fears of being abandoned at times and I think artist Matthew Woodson did such a great job capturing this emotion here.

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND:

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

So, are you looking for a little excitement this weekend? Are you tired of the air conditioned cubicle at work? Ready for a little people watching, a little art gawking, and little music, and little cocktail imbibing?

May I suggest: LOUNGE ON 20 and the Sacramento Art Walk!

LOUNGE ON 20 is one of the latest and greatest new hang outs located in the heart of midtown, 20th Street, Sacramento, California. Sleek and modern with a sophisticated, yet casual atmosphere, ON 20 emphasizes wine, champagne and smaller plates. And what champagne lounge would be complete without oysters, so count on them as well!

Owned and operated by the very gallant Ali Makari (who also owns Restaurant 55 , another top notch restaurant), the lounge is doing brisk business. It's small wonder as Mr. Makari has a way of making everyone feel like a VIP. Take a look at the drink menu here and the food menu here. Just a little something to whet the appetite!

The concrete floors, white leather upholstery and dark wood accents all provide an excellent backdrop to the custom lighting which continually changes throughout the evening as it skims over the wave textured white walls. Wine bottles become an artful display against one whole wall of the space. You can tell where the priorities are here!

I stopped in during their "soft opening" last month during the Second Saturday Art Walk to check it out. It was in full swing early in the evening.

A fab place to just hang out with friends, old and new.

And here are some old and new friends now! My long-time gal pal Leanne Davis just happens to be one of the fabulously brilliant designers of ON20. And new friend Valerie Hoffman-Deming headed up the project. Both are from the very talented architecture firm of Lionakis Beaumont Design Group, one of Sacramento's finest. Very nice work ladies!

ON20 is located in the MARRS Building (MARRS = Midtown Art Retail Restaurant Scene) which was developed recently by the very enterprising visionary, Michael Heller. Above is a very typical scene from the Sacramento Second Saturday Art Walk (I will refer to it as SSSAW) right outside the MARRS building.

The Solomon Dubnick Art Gallery, also located in the MARRS building, is a "must-see" on SSSAW. Serious art for serious art collectors.

But there is something for absolutely everyone. There are a host of galleries all within walking distance, and there is a free tram service to get you to those bit farther than you may want to hoof.

If you start a bit on the early side, you may miss the heavier crowds...but then again...the crowds are a part of the excitement. I had to hold my camera above my head to get this picture. It was a "tight spot".

There is also the out and out funky and fun. This was a fund raising art event: the Art Bra Show, which benefited the Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation.

There are bands on every corner. This one was all girls.

There are all forms of entertainment.

One of my favorites is Sacramento's own One Man Band Acoustic Sanctuary. You crawl into the very small back entrance of the "band wagon" and find:

Wink Ljizz. He will ask you to take a seat and ask you to name any subject. He will play you a song, or several, based on that subject. Just the thing to hum on your way home at the end of a very happy night.

Light Box

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Design Mind
Designed by Jo Meesters, Light Box is a series of lamps made in the tradition of furniture making. The lamp which is made out of wood has a pattern of 8.000 holes reinforced with transparent resin. In combination with the pattern of low growing trees, Light Box is the ideal room divider forming an artificial hedge or a nocturnal landscape with your home.
