I wanted to share these pretty cushions I found...when I upholster my sofa (if I ever get around to it) I want to get some of these! These would make such a nice accents to any sofa or chair. What do you think of pillowcases that are made of multiple fabrics?? I think they work best when you have a sofa with a solid colored fabric, that way they really stand out! You can see more of these beautiful pillows here.

Giving in the 60s, Week II

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court

Here are more examples of gifts that House Beautiful was suggesting chic readers buy in December 1968. These happen to be from the $25 or under category. There's a 14" stain-resistant cocktail tray with bird and branch motif, priced at $14. The tray is accompanied by "Ripple" stacking glass designed by Timo Sarpaneva, $4 each.

The copper-clad stainless-steel crepes pan has a round warmer for Sterno. $25.

I love the red of this Verichron barometer, $20.

And I would definitely be happy to receive these Glass Martini pitchers with sterling-silver bases. How about you? In 1968 they cost $8.50 each.

HB's suggested gift wrap, shown at the top, looks pretty fashion forward to me too. All these years I thought Martha Stewart and Eric Pike invented the tailored approach to layering strips of ribbon on a box. I even copied this one year. Of course the Stewart team always put together the most amazing color combinations.

BTW: If you are passionate about ribbon, be sure to read this related post from Kaari Marie.

Also, the red Greek key ribbon that I ordered from M & J arrived today. It's very easy to work with and ties nicely, so I heartily recommend it. (For more paper ideas visit Paper Mojo.)

Indoor/outdoor Furniture In New Material

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)

In February of 200, when we were preparing our new location in the Pearl in Portland, I wrote
There can be disagreement about global warming and its causes, but there is no denying the Green Movement. Our bookkeeper, Helen Pilgrim, sends us a note about Slatescape, EcoCem and Paper Stone (for) Counter tops. She says she first heard about it in the Oregonian Home & Gardens section. "I don't know how this compares to granite, but it looks great."
We fell in love with PaperStone and used the chocolate color as the reception and work counter top in the showroom front area. It's warm and satiny smooth to the touch. When we first saw the material, it was only available in slabs of several thicknesses.

Now, thanks to Material Process Systems, there is indoor/outdoor furniture available in material similar to paperstone with the same outstanding features. Take a look:

The company writes
The material is waterproof so it does very well outside. Over time, it acquires a natural patina, but the integrity of the material is never compromised. Variations of this material have actually been used for decades in the marine industry and in the manufacturing of skate ramps -- that's how durable it is.

Etsy Find of the Day: YooLa Wire Pendant Lights

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: More Ways to Waste Tim
I blogged Israeli industrial designer Yael Falk's (aka Etsy seller YooLa) delicate crocheted wire creations not too long ago, but I'm nuts about her new pendant lights (like the Pomegranate Lampshade, above, $90).

I love the webbed shadows the lights cast -- crazy cool.

Scheherazade Lampshade, $180

Each shade comes with a brass halogen light socket and a 78-inch electrical cord. Click here to see all of YooLa's Etsy offerings.

five things we learned last week

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: shelterrific

lightbulb.jpg

1. We need to give away things more often! Our Thomas Paul Sea Plate giveaway has gotten an amazing response! At the time of this writing, over 180 of you left a comment hoping to win. If you haven’t yet, there’s still time! Contest closes Weds 5 pm PST at which time we will choose two winners using a random number generator. Click here to enter and — good luck!

2. Even though the economy is in the pits, you’re still shopping — at craft fairs. We did a round up of some that we knew about, and many more of you mentioned ones near you. Take a look, and if we’ve left any out, please let us know here!

3. Having a live Christmas tree you can plant after the holidays is a nice idea, but make sure you keep it watered! Says Steph: “I got a small live one with replanting in mind two years ago, but it died before the ground thawed. Make sure if you get one it’s in rich soil and you really take care of it. They’re not really meant to be indoors, with heat drying them out and all.” Click here for more on this green idea.

4. We’re not the only ones who have beeeeee-come nuts about honey. Beth wrote: “When I was a teenager I was hosted by a Swedish family that had a farm as well as bees - bees that had the run of the forest for collecting pollen. I never knew that honey could taste like a *place* but it really does. Such a treat!” Click here to read about Angela M.’s beekeeping adventures.

5. Get 10% these adorable gift tags by mentioning Shelterrific! MaryLou who makes these adorable Alice in Wonderland tags wrote to say: “I really love the Sir John Tenniel illustrations, and I’m always making things from them — I have a whole collection of tags and cards, and I’ve done loads of custom items for people. Since this was such a nice surprise, I’ll give a 10% discount on any of the stationery items in my Etsy shop if you mention you saw my tags here.” Click here to go the her shop.

My Kitchen Shelf...

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
There is this small shelf in my kitchen which inspires me to try out various arrangements. The little blackboard definitely helps me convey a message:-) It doesn't require any great skills but has me smiling all day. Do you also have such a corner, a shelf, a table or a windowsill in your home that inspires you to try new creative arrangements?

Holiday: Gumps

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

I was in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago for a book signing event ( more on the next week!) which was being held at the beautiful Gump's store near Union Square. These are some of the photos I took. Above is one of the many spectacular table displays on the second floor where the China and crystal are kept. I thought it was very festive for a Fall dinner or Thanksgiving.

Furniture is also on display in these wonderful vignettes. I love the color combination here with the burnt orange walls and dark grey silk on the Bergere chair and ottoman. The Moroccan tables definitely are on my wish list.

I love the large Foo dogs in this picture arranged with the sofa and live edged coffee table.

I think this "room" was my favorite with the black lacquered display etagere with the blue interior. I like the idea of two matching chairs with different fabrics. And the area rug, luscious silk!

Isn't this an amazing display of over scaled lanterns? If you are in San Francisco at all during the Holiday Season, do stop in at Gumps. The assortment of Christmas ornaments is to die for, and there is bound to be more than just one thing you won't be able to live without!

And if you are in the TV watching mood on your Turkey Day, stop on by:

earlier this week my dear friend ivy leapt into her 30's with her amazing natural beauty & grace glowing as usual. i haven't had time until now to give her the birthday collage card, so i hope even though this is belated, the heartfelt adoration is what shines through. because, it's beaming brightly for ivy now and always.
i admire her so much for so many things ~ her strength of character, her dedication of practice, her artistic genius, her wisdom, her compassion, her generostiy, her genuineness, her sense of adventure. she is a true great blessing in my life and she contributes so much to every thing she does, every where she goes ~ the world is a very lucky place to have her in it. happy 30 miss. ivy divine!

Michael Crockett

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire

Today was a good day. Today was a "gasp" day because today I found Michael Crockett's portfolio. Doesn't take much to keep me happy ... just a stellar batch of pictures of amazing homes captured by a photographer who has the gift, the god given talent, the eye. Oh my oh my oh my has this guy got the eye. Fabulous! This is just a taste of what awaits you at his website.

oh, to live in a barn

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
if you've been a studio wellspring reader for a while you'll know i have this thing for barns turned in to homes. whenever i see one i get weak in the knees. it's a long time dream of mine {we're talking i've been drawing up floor plans on graph paper since 6th grade} to use modern interior design in a vintage barn. so it's always incredibly inspiring to see what others have done with similar dreams ~ to see how ingenius their concept is, or to imagine how i'd do things differently. lately i've stumbled across several great resources for aquiring & moving barns, renovating barns & decorating in barn-house style.
first off, the barn pages ~ it lists more than 200 barns for sale, which are priced according to condition. most of the barns need to be moved from the land they're on ~ which is just fine, since often barns are located in an out-of-the-way place without easy access to utilities & such. so you can buy a barn and have it disassembled and shipped to a more desired location, where it can be put back together again. or you can just use the barn timber to build something new. it's a fantastic recycling concept, isn't it?
for help with the restoration and reassembly of barns, check out the barn people in vermont, berkshire barns in massachusetts, and the new jersey barn company. they've all been dismantling, restoring and reassembling vintage barns for over twenty-five years. even if your favorite barn isn't in the north east, they would still be great resources for any project location.
for lots of lovely barn related decor items & furnishings, the barn house blog is a lovely place to visit.
and to take part in a blogger's project of turning a barn into a modern home, check out bare hill barn ~ it's fascinating.
lastly, some eye candy from the barn pages:

happy may 24 weekend - victoria day

i'm finally back on this thing, trying to get my head around the blogs i've been missing so very much. i'm finishing up my project this coming weekend and starting the retail project in june. i have so many things on the go right now that everything seems to be a blur to me. i guess for a work-a-holic like myself it's a good thing, but my husband and i are definitely in need of some serious vacation time.

we're driving around town today for may 24, shooting the city of toronto for a client project i have.

i hope everyone has been doing well and i can't wait to start blogging again! pictures will be up shortly!!!!

Lighting completed

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire
This blog chronicles my entire kitchen renovation from start to finish. Greentea Design has provided me with their solid wood kitchen cabinets, and I'm taking care of the rest.

If you'd like to be brought up to date, check out my kitchen remodel blog for an archive of previous posts. I posted recently about the arrival of the appliances and some other odds and ends, and now for the completed lighting.

The lighting and wiring in my new kitchen is FINALLY completed. Everyone always says how key lighting is in a space and guess what? They're RIGHT!! The kitchen looked great once the cabinets were in but now that it's properly lit, WOW - the cabinets look even more fabulous. What a difference from the old kitchen, with one ceiling fan with 3 lights, and a lamp on the counter. Now I have 9 potlights, 3 pendants, 2 wall lamps and under-cabinet light strips. Funny thing is now that the kitchen is so well lit, all the other rooms have such crappy lighting in comparison.

Here are a few photos of the kitchen taken right after the electrician finished up (hood fan was mid-installation).

The pendants I bought at Crawford Alexander turned out to be a perfect fit with the look I was going for. They are industrial and fun and quirky...and since I have no dining table yet, everyone is cursing them because we've all bashed our heads on them numerous times. I have regular bulbs in them but because of the shape of them they give off hardly any light so I have to pick up some floodlights to use instead.

To see the rest of the lighting in place, including my Tolomeos which I am totally in love with, click HERE.

A Beautiful Tulle Skirt

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

Last week when we were re-arranging the shop Melanie spotted this girl who works in the shop next door to our shop wearing this fabulous tulle skirt. As Melanie is getting married next year we had to stop her and ask her the details. She told us it was the skirt from her wedding dress which was a vintage 1950's dress. We were in awe of this beautiful skirt and asked if we could take a photo so that we could swoon over it. When we were looking back at the photos we noticed she had paired the skirt with a silhouette t-shirt. How gorgeous is that!! I just had to share this beautiful outfit with you!!

Another Binky update

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire
I posted here and here about my friend Jenny's cat Binky who was adopted by one of our readers, Laurel. Jenny just sent me an email Laurel sent her that included the first photos Jenny has received of Binky. Laurel's email made my tear up because I am so relieved at the outcome and that I was able to help save a kitty. I thought I would include some of it because some readers were wondering how Binky was doing. It's a very happy ending and I couldn't be more pleased. Now I've just got to get Laurel to send me photos of Binky strategically placed around her loft so I can use it for a "cat on furniture" post. :)

"Just wanted to send you some photos that Brendan took of Binky in his new home. He’s very comfortable here now. He sleeps with us every night. Just before we head to bed, we turn on the electric blanket to warm up the bed, and he knows that means it’s almost bedtime, so he jumps on the bed and helps warm it up. He loves sleeping on the electric blanket, it keeps us all so warm. When we first get in bed, he crawls up by our shoulders and we both pet him. Then when it’s lights out and time to sleep, he crawls to the foot of the bed and sleeps there all night. Then at about 6:45, he starts to crawl around our shoulders, and walk across our pillows. Sometimes he flops on the pillow on top of my hair! He makes quite a noise until we get up to feed him. He’s the most vocal cat I’ve ever known. He chirps and chirps all day long. He spends most of the day lying on the rug in our office in between our desks. He goes back and forth between us, getting all the petting and attention he can! Such a big baby. He’s just a super kitty and we’re so lucky to have him!"

Scarlet & Violet

Charlotte sent me a beautiful bouquet via email. She sent me a link to the gorgeous London florist Scarlet & Violet. Can't you just smell the luscious perfume wafting through your screens? Vic Brotherson creates these beautiful arrangements. I just love the blowzy overabundance of blooms and the sweet vintage containers and vases. Definitely not granny. Definitely granny chic!

Harry's 6th Birthday

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

Melanie {above} on a ladder in our front yard decorating the tree for Harry's Birthday.

Red wine makes filling up 150 water bombs much easier!!

Yesterday afternoon we celebrated Harry's 6th Birthday at home with a couple of his closest friends and cousins and family. We had a pool party with water pistols and water bombs and a swimming pool birthday cake which my lovely friend, Sharnel from The Cupcake Company made. Melanie {my lovely and creative decorator at Black & Spiro} came and decorated our front tree with red, white and blue bunting, red & white polka dot lanterns and candles.

The night before over a few glasses of red wine my husband managed to fill up approximately 150 water bombs which probably lasted all of about 15 minutes once the children got a hold of them!! My gorgeous friend Jody helped me with the food which was such a huge help!! A fun time was had by all and my little 6 year old thanked me this morning with a humongous hug and a kiss for "the best birthday ever"!!

Oh, and I nearly forgot to show you these gorgeous cupcakes which Sharnel also made for Harry which we sent to school last week for his birthday! So simply gorgeous!!

Designers Guild, Autumn 2008

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

As we go into the weekend, I wanted to leave you with the dreamy images of The Royal Collection, Fabrics and Wallpaper, the newest from Designers Guild.

Inspired by the interiors of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, and by the art in the Royal Collection, this collection is a creation of luxurious fantasy.

Designers Guild was given access to the archive of historic fabrics and wallcoverings and has come up with their own interpretation of sumptuous embroidered silks, velvet jacquard velvets and flocked wallpapers.

The Arabella Autumn Winter Collection also makes it's appearance with a fairytail-like collection:

Dream a little dream this weekend!

Additional Note: I received an email from Sophie Trinder with a reminder that the whole collection can be viewed here. And in answer to Aesthete's Lament comment, the collection was indeed photographed at Buckingham Palace. A link to the Royal Collection with more information about the Palace can be reached here.

HAPPY WEEKEND!

i'm a little slow on the announcement band wagon for spreading the word on a story of tragedy and incredible human compassion for one of our fellow blogging friends. this is a story that has stuck with me all week ~ i can't stop thinking about it actually, so i am sorry for being late on bringing this up on studio wellspring ~ but it's not too late for it to be useful.
a lovely woman and delightful blogger, stephanie nielson and her husband christian were in a very serious plane crash last week. they are a young couple with four children under the age of six. they are in critical condition with a very long & very expensive recovery ahead of them. stephanie has third degree burns covering 80% of her body and christian has third degree burns over 30% of his body. the outreach to help them has been so inspirational, and you can be a part of it too! online auctions are all over the blogiverse to help them with the expenses and there's a fund you can contribute to directly as well.
as of yesterday, 300 websites & blogs are auctioning off some super wonderful items for the family's benefit, in all price ranges. go here to see the comprehensive list: http://www.designmom.com/ . i've included photos from some of the items to tantilize you into jumping over & bidding.
if you are able, please consider contributing to this fund that will go directly to the family. http://www.nierecovery.com/
more info and updates about stephanie and christian can be found here: http://blog.cjanerun.com/
