Diwali Ki Shubhkamnayen: 6.11.2007

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
This has to be one of those impromtu ideas, which just strikes you when you are doing something as simple as making Idlis for breakfast;-)
Serve traditional Indian sweets in one plate of an Idli mould, dry fruits in the other and light oil diyas in the mini-cocktail Idli mould:-)
You have a simple, instant Diwali Decoration ready!

I am swooning over the photography of Frédéric Vasseur. Simple spaces, filled with light that appear so peaceful. I so badly want to just curl up in that daybed in the second photo and have a granny nap.

Reader Design Dilemma-Penny's Kitchen

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
Reader Penelope wants to give her "kit" kitchen a cosmetic make-over. So let's roll up our sleeves and see what we've got to work with!

Here's her kitchen, ready for some sprucing up.
"The cupboards are a pale pinky beige that I intend to paint white and install new handles (chrome), as well as install a new shelf (white) somewhere above the cupboards.
My laminate benchtop is a swirly, "natural rock inspired" pink/violet/blue monstrosity, but we're stuck with it, and I'd like to make the best of it.
Here's the room on the other side of the kitchen which we don't actually use as a dining area."
And for the most important part- what colors does Penny like?
images source
"My eye tends to be drawn to soft colours, like icey pink and blue, even soft lavendar. I just don't know what will go best with the benchtops we have, although it does incorporate a mixture of these tones."

I think Penny is on the right track with her inspirational photos showing soft pastels with a retro feel. The counter-tops are unfortunate, for sure, but not a lost cause. With the focus drawn away from the counters, and onto the walls, they won't stand out quite so distinctly.

So, the first question I would ask would be about lighting. Is the kitchen dark during the day, or does it get lots of bright natural lighting?
In this mock-up, I pulled a pastel blue from one of Penny's inspiration photos for the walls, and a light pink for the ceiling.

images source
A nice solution to give the illusion of sunlight is using buttery yellow, like this photo Penny submitted. Love the copper pots against the yellow and white-lovely!
drape pattern source
In taking a closer look at the second kitchen picture, I see other areas where color can be incorporated. Notice I pulled the yellow up onto the ceiling to de-emphasize it's low height. The curtain leading into a back room (pantry?) could be replaced by colorful upholstery fabric quite easily. Our designer-readers might have some good suggestions for what might work there.

To draw attention away from the mauve tones in the counter-top, you could try pulling out one of the other colors you like better, like light blue or lilac (as long as it isn't too gray which can quickly translate to dingy )

Also, by swapping out the back splash tiles (if this is an option) for something more updated in color, it would draw attention away from the mauve theme going on.
You might even be able to paint over it. (but -only- if it doesn't get wet frequently) A crisp bright white for the trim would also liven up the space. Perhaps a fun light fixture with some full-spectrum bulbs to brighten the kitchen? Play around with the colors of the items displayed on the shelves-you can incorporate the pastel palette more completely.

Since the kitchen is so small, several more shelves stacked above would offer more storage space, and more design opportunities. Granted, this kitchen example has lilac cabinets instead of white, but feel how refreshing and alive this space feels! Besides, who says cabinets have to be white or wood?

So, that's my initial take on Penny's kitchen make-over. What would you suggest for her space? Please share your ideas!

Klas Fahlen is one of my favorite illustrators. These magazine holders are from his portfolio at the Art Department. The building-scape is totally genius, especially the second image with the plaza perspective illustration.

(And yes, I'm trying to post more these days. I know, a blog with daily posts?? What a concept.)

The Roots

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: designer's library
Roots2

I went with some of my friends from high school to see The Roots and Erykah Badu on Monday--which was really good. The Roots set was super short (like half an hour) and Erykah's set was super long (like 2-1/2 hours, I think?)! I love that along with her extra large hair which obscured her face, Erykah wore this funky red, grid-patterned pantsuit (which looked like something straight out of Andre 3000's closet), Urkel-style black-rimmed glasses, and mule tennis shoes (at least it looked like that from where I was sitting). I wouldn't doubt she probably had suspenders on underneath, too. Everything about it from the performance and music to her outfit seemed both feminine and masculine, uncompromised, vision-driven, and just plain nutty. Loved it.

Anyway, seeing The Roots again also reminded of a poster I made ten years ago. It was my final project in the one and only graphic design class I've ever taken. I took this class right after college when I realized that I was interested in more artistic pursuits. I remember choosing to hand-make this poster on manila paper instead of using a computer to design it.

It's always interesting to look back on your early work to see how far you've come and at the same time, to see what hasn't changed about you.

Bed, Breakfast & Fireplace...

...said a small wooden board below the name 'King's Cliff'.King's Cliff~ Yes, that's the name of one of two places we stayed during our trip to the beautiful hills of Nilgiri in Tamilnadu.

I absolutely love places with a history and this old colonial mansion which now is a hotel is charming. The well manicured green lawns with white wrought iron chairs & exotic varieties of flowers almost takes you back hundred years when butlers in white served hot cups of high grown Nilgiris tea to the 'Sahebs'. Well, they still do:-)
So we sat back and soaked in the beauty of the view of the hills through the windows of 'Earl's Secret'- The restaurant which lives up to it's reputation of serving delicious food.
Sinfully delicious brownie with ice cream & chocolate sauce which they serve you on the porch after a heavy afternoon lunch & before you doze off reading a delightful novel.

The nine rooms are named after the works of 'Shakspeare' and each comes with a fireplace. *sigh* well it's been a while since I have been near a fireplace and slept to the sound of crackling wood.
A live-band playing our all-time favourite rock numbers, the bright winter sun, the chirpy birds, the waiters serving hot tea with chocolate cream cookies... Night falls, temperature dips, peaceful silence & a knock at our door. In comes a man with chocolate-mint candies, an extra woollen quilt & firewood to light our fireplace:-)
We were in heaven:-) Sweet dreams people, next post when I wake up;-)

When color studies aren't real

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
I'm always amused when I read about certain "studies" paid for by companies to support some marketing project or advertising campaign. While there are most certainly credible research studies conducted on the efficacy of colors and how they relate to user/user experience, I must caution you. There are many many so-called "studies" out there that have absolutely no credibility. A sure sign is when a blanket statement is made, encompassing huge demographics and situations.

For example, I was at a lecture the other week, listening to an eco-friendly company rep talk about using green products for building. While he had a captive audience of color consultants in the room, he asked our opinion about a specific paint color chosen for a doctor's office.
The architect of the project had supported his color choice by declaring that "studies had shown" that this particularly dreadful shade of diarrhea green was calming and soothing to patients. I wish I had taken a picture of this color sample- it was SO awful!

Then you have this article on US News and World Report about how car colors reveals the psyche of the driver. This "study" comes from CNW Marketing Research where they evidently asked nearly 1,900 Americans about their attitudes toward their own lives at several points over the course of a year. They also asked each participant the color of the car they drive most often, which allowed the researchers to develop a kind of color-confidence index.
Pixar images source
I am immediately skeptical... A color-confidence index? Obviously, automotive companies invest a Ton of money on market research to reach their target audience. But honestly, this seems just a tad bit formulaic. Maybe it works for caricatures, but we're more complex than that.
According to CNW, here's what the color of a car says about the person who bought it:
They were also able to calculate the "moodiness" of drivers—how widely their confidence varied from one extreme to the other, in the course of a year.
What do they mean by "confidence"? See what I mean? Recipes involving colors just don't work. There's no validity to that. What if a subject chose their particular car, not based on a color, but instead based on availability of that model? My car is silver gray. Probably one of the last colors I would have personally chosen, had I had options.

Well, that's my take on this, in any case. Anyone share my sentiments?

74. For the love of BLACK

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

black and be a daunting color to work with, especially on walls but for some reason I've always been drawn to the dark allure of black interiors. it's sexy, dramatic and so out of the norm.

so you can imagine my excitement when my client mentioned last night that she wanted to incorporate some sort of black in her space! at first i thought she meant black furnishings but when i realized she wanted more - on the walls, on the floors, on the stairs or where ever my heart desired, my eyes widen and my heart started skipping beats ... could i be hearing this right? I have the opportunity to live out my black interior dreams through her? and so start my quest to find the most inspiring black spaces.

Clean House: A Green Nursery

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® Blo

I think Niecy Nash is hilarious. Thus, I find myself getting sucked into the show she hosts, Clean House, all the time. This week they featured a couple who wanted a green nursery for their baby. After some soul-searching, the mother-to-be finally gave in and sold the nursery furniture at the garage sale in exchange for green nursery furniture by Oeuf. In these days of green-washing, I wanted to let you know what makes Oeuf furniture green. I will use the Oeuf Classic Crib to show you the considerations a designer takes into account when manufacturing an eco-friendly piece of furniture:

First of all, the crib can be transformed into a toddler bed with an additional kit. It’s able to transform to meet lifestyle needs and changes, thus making it a product you can use longer and in different ways. Oeuf furniture is designed to be used after a nursery is no longer necessary:

Second, The birch used in the base is from certified sustainable forests.

Third, the sides, footboard and headboard are all cut from single sheets of wood panel which is eco-friendly MDF made of recovered wood fibers - to eliminate the hazard of loosening joints.

Fourth, the lacquer used on the finished products is, of course, lead-free, non-toxic, and completely inert. In addition to being eco-friendly, non-toxic lacquer is what you want to have if your youngster decides to try to chomp his/her way out of the crib bars!

To check out the entire Oeuf line, click here.

If you have completed an eco-friendly home project, please leave a comment and tell us about it!

Is it storage?...or art?

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire
Furniture that acts as storage for all your junk belongings can sometimes be boring. I came across a line of eco-friendly furniture at 2Modern by Iannone Design that had me just smitten. It's furniture with a kick. They have such beautiful detail they would act as pieces of art. The design on the coffee table in the fourth photo? That's about 1600 hand inlaid wood dots!!!! WOW. You'd never see any of this end up on Craigslist. Me likey. Alot.

Frederick Cooper Pendant Lamp Wins Award

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)
Metropolitan Home magazine in their Year's Best Design 100 have selected Alexander and Meagan Julian for creating a winning pendant for Frederick Cooper.
The editors considered all items in the "art of making" which include architecture, interior décor, home furnishings and gadgets.

The pendant is a reductivist take on one of the Julians' favorite textile patterns. The work is hand cut brass with a rich bronze finish. The white linen drum shade provides texture to an otherwise sleek silhouette. View this pendant and other Julian designs at www.frederickcooper.com or download the brochure.

Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery is proud to have Frederick Cooper lamps as a vendor.

Marrakech writing: and on becoming a travel writer (or sort of, anyway)

09/05/2008, 21:31 | Original Site: My Marrakesh

She had been writing, you see.  Travel writing.  She had been scribbling:  oh, this and that, yes, this and that.  She had just finished working on the Marrakech chapter and the Adventures chapter of the new Fodor's Guide to Morocco.  But there was more.  You see she did a bi-monthly city guide to Marrakech for a Spanish magazine.  And she wrote Moroccan feature stories and some not-so-feature-stories-but-nice-anyway stories.  And the editors put up with her quirky writing style.  And then they sent her the magazines with her articles, all fresh and new, and smelling like clean in big manila envelopes in the mail.

Her kids thought it was pretty cool:-)

I adore these Cartolina cards created by Fiona Richards (of Dominion Post & Salvage) here in British Columbia. Every one of the cards is a Canadian multicultural collage of recycled paper and eco-conscious inspiration. Ancient patterns and contemporary colours, detailed type-ornaments and old wood block prints... it's a world of texture and an eyeful of sizzling colour. Completely eco-unique and delightfully refreshing!

68. Chair Flaire

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

i saw this image on design corner and had myself a good laugh. the point behind this hilarious chair pad is to transform your generic seating environment into a very modern blast from the past, with prints from antique chairs to classic Eames chairs at an affordable price. "If ya can’t afford an Eames, just make it like you have one."

the creator of this chair pad Chenhhui Su states "it not only transforms our generic seating objects, but also creates personal spaces in the public environment. It changes the environment immediately and temporarily, which in turn brings us an instant pleasure in daily life."

i couldn't agree with him more!
i personally love chairs. they serve so many purposes, from being a functional object to visually captivating objects, conversation starters. but most importantly, chairs can immediately transform a space. taking old, antique chairs and transforming them into beautiful, modern peices of art is what i love to do. here are a few of my favorite chair images.

It's Early, But...

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Yes, it is early. But if you have kids in your life you no doubt are already looking at Halloween costumes. Last week I was in Star Provisions, the stylish 4,000 square foot marketplace located in Atlanta's Howell Mill corridor, and spotted all sorts of skull confections.

What the store has assembled is really an homage to the traditional Mexican festival, Dia de Muertos, or "Day of the Dead." This celebration is historically held on the first two days of November and honors family members with elaborate private altars, sugar skulls, marigolds, and good fare.

Whether you are planning a Halloween party or something related to Dia de Muertos, Star Provisions has molds for these skulls as well as the actual sweets for sale. Prices range from $2.50 to $35.
The Atlanta History Center will host a Day of the Dead program in collaboration with the Instituto de Mexico and the Mexican Consulate, on Sunday, November 2 from noon to 5 p.m. Highlights will include storytelling, authentic Mexican food and music, and altars.

Star Provisions is located at 1198 Howell Mill Road, and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. (404) 365-0410. Carolyne Roehm designed the girlie Halloween with silver pumpkins shown at top.

We had a beautiful trip to Monterey and Carmel last weekend with lots of opportunities to take pictures, as you can imagine. These are a few I took at the Monterey Bay Aquarium:

I may use some of these in my daughter's bedroom redo. The pinks would be just right!

And this little bird seemed like he was posing just for me.

I was able to see alot of things that I will share with you in the next couple of days: historical gardens, restored theater in Monterey, a beautiful new antique shop in Carmel, etc. Check back!

Have a great weekend!

Earthly Delights

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court

Photographer David Christensen's luxuriant image of this velvet chair with hand-painted leafy pillow is just one of the many gorgeous pictures that appear in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles' October issue. (Editorial Director Clint Smith and his team really hit a home run.) The vignette, by the way, is part of a story involving some bloggers you may have heard of before. When I saw the fabrics published for the first time, I immediately thought of the mossy, woodsy mood Coleen Rider discussed on Friday.
And that, in turn, reminded me of this 18th century English crewelwork described by Hali as the most voluptuous item at the 2006 HALI Fair. It was compared to needlework found at Hardwick Hall, home of the ultimate Elizabethan celebrity, Bess of Hardwick.

Atlanta-based designer Keith Arnold lives in a Buckhead high-rise, not a sprawling English estate, but the tapestry that hangs in his dining room looks as if it might have come from the latter. Arnold's home is filled with impeccably tasteful contemporary furniture, and his striking art and accessories set it apart from just another good looking residence. I think you will be inspired by his mix of the precious with the lowbrow. Look for it on the October AH & L cover.

If you plan to be hunting for your own treasures in Atlanta during the next week, you might want to stop by Acquisitions, 631 Miami Circle (404-261-2478). Through Saturday, September 20, Italian imports are on sale.

For details on the chair or pillow shown at the top of this post, visit or contact Interiors Market, 55 Bennett Street (404-352-0055). Or contact Bob Garner at Fabulous Things LTD.

Wall-to-Wall II

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Wall-to-wall carpeting seems to elicit strong reactions. Especially when it is a deep, solid color. (Yes, there are certainly more pressing issues in the world today, but among some of my friends and relatives a minor debate has been launched by the wall-to-wall "Augusta National green" seen in the October Domino -- the Sommers nursery.)

Whether you think it is bold and graphic, or you just are not a fan, wall-to-wall was used in some of the most celebrated mid-century American homes. Above is a fun image I stumbled across: Babe Paley at Kiluna Farm as seen in The World in Vogue.

If the carpet here is not literally wall-to-wall, the impact of an almost completely covered floor is similar. What strikes me about the interior -- apart from masterpieces by Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cezanne and Rousseau -- is the mix of colors. Softer versions of the primary hues red, blue and yellow are coexisting. And that tufted yellow sofa is a real standout. Paley's dress is by Charles James.
