Art to the Rescue
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: BluelinesI was recently preparing my house for a friend’s baby shower when I noticed the non-curtained French doors in the den provided a great view for guests to my not-so-neat bedroom.
It’s the kind of thing you don’t think of until the door bell is about to ring.
My quick fix: I took a few of my son Sammy’s paintings from our massive collection and taped them neatly with white artist’s tape to the back of the doors.
It was meant to be a temporary solution, but my husband and I love it. (We know we are biased.) I might even laminate the art so I can hang the masterpieces neatly with some tiny eyelets on cup hooks.
Since there is a lot of Sammy art where that came from, we often have “art shows†at our house. (His teacher told me that he “uses up more paper than anyone in the class.â€) I was proud, even though I’m not sure it was meant as a compliment.
Our shows are installed in hallways, on doors, and strung on clotheslines under the mantle. One “piece†that is on permanent display over our mantle is a series of his first people drawings collaged and hung in one of Ikea’s “NYTTJA†frames.
They come in lots of colors and sizes. The one above is the large (19 ¾†x 27 ½â€) orange one and it’s only $7.99! (One downside with the frame is the plexiglass starts to bow and sag after a while. I plan to replace it with glass.)
Collaging a bunch of your child’s artwork is a great way to capture a series and create a larger piece of art.
Now that my younger son, Lionel, is starting to draw himself, we may have to move to a place with more walls!
65. Summer Camping
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW
i love camping!
nothing feels better than waking up in the middle of mother natures wonderous creation outdoors on a hot summer day with nothing but fresh air all around you... but as much as i'm a nature girl, i love to curl up into a comfy warm bed at night and to a hot cup of tea that i can drink in my favorite oversized mug i don't like to keep anywhere else but out of harms way. things i would have never brought to a camp ground before i saw this.
the Air Stream

this wonderful creation will allow any nature lover to enbrace their wild carefree side while allowing those who appreciate stove top kitchens and warm comfy beds over rocky floors and a sleeping bag to join in on the action.
this is perfect for my husband and i. i being the one who loves dirty floors and rocks in my back and my husband who prefers homecooked meals and a flushable bathroom.
etta designs & sustainable interiors
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
the term 'sustainable interiors' can be misleading because it describes only part of the picture. claiming that a project or renovation is green, sustainable or eco-friendly, may seem like a wonderful thing to boast but it alone doesn't define a space. an interior space also needs to have functionality, beauty, comfort, and good space planning ~ as all good design requires. the vast majority of projects claiming to be green aren't 100% eco-friendly, especialy since they're often found within existing non-green architecture. but integrating green design techniques and knowing where to go to help boost the eco-friendly factor in interiors projects is the key stone to making a shift from wasteful to wonderful in interior design. that's why i just adore finding people like rachel winokur & her firm eTTa designs.
rachel winokur runs eTTa deisgns, an l.a. based interior design firm with a focus on interior design for residential & commercial applications including stunning eco-friendly solutions. rachel is the founder and lead designer of eTTa designs which handles the entire design process including concept, budget, space planning, selecting and purchasing finishes, furnishings & equipment, project management, and installation.
in her own home she's stayed green largely due to using vintage pieces instead of buying new. for larger projects here's how she stays green:the reuse people's warehouse is a terrific place to buy building materials at a fraction of the cost of new. for commercial projects, check with the city to find out who they require you to use. {for the eco-friendly nail salon we completed recently, we were instructed to use consolidated disposal services.}
planning the design ~ use what's already there. it's important to embrace the existing conditions and make as few structural changes as possible {as long as it makes sense to the project}. this creates less waste and can also decrease the cost and energy usage. for the nail salon, we kept the existing window and door openings and added new metal frames to give it a fresh and clean look, added clerestory windows for cross-ventilation with clerestory windows in the back, and added fluted glass for privacy. we re-used an existing exterior light fixture which was cleaned up and re-installed with a flourescent bulb. to remove existing paint and stains from a fixture you wish to re-use, try soyclean's paint stripper. we also discovered a wonderful concrete floor hiding underneath the wall-to-wall carpet. to remove remaining carpet adhesive, use something like franmar's bean-e-doo and enhance the concrete finish with a product from eco-procote.
new materials ~ when selecting new materials and finishes, consider not only the manufacturer's 'green' claim, but also the product's life cycle and who manufactures it and where. for example, recyclable glass tile from sandhill industries is not only made of 100% recycled glass, the energy used to make it is less than 1/2 that required to make ceramic tile and 1/4 that of cast glass tile.choosing the right green product usually requires weighing the pros and cons just like with any product. for example, at $29/SF, the sandhill glass tile may sound expensive, but consider covering a smaller area with this special tile or use it more generously and hold back on something else. also consider the associated savings with benefits of 'green' products, like health, durability, sustainability and curb appeal.
for more delights along the same lines, rachel has a nice blog based on her green design philosophy & savvy, called eTTa bits.
Photo Op: Sacramento Farmers Market
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedidThere is something about heading over to the Farmer's Market on a early Sunday morning that lifts up my spirits. It starts off quietly, with my Trader Joe's tote bag in hand heading out the door. I feel the dew still settling and the birds waking. The crisp air touches my face as I get to my car for the five minute drive. I crack the windows and turn on the CD player to Paul Nutini's "Autumn Leaves". Perhaps a but corny, but then again, I am a sentimentalist. I pick up my friend Leanne, and we talk about our daughters and how they are fairing with this thing called "adolescence". Approaching the market, we find the closest spot we can. And then we are there: The bustle of people, (many we know and say an early morning "hello"), the beautiful colors everywhere, and the smells of lavender, basil and onions.
We each have our favorite vendors that we visit. For me it is the ladies who sell the avocados and strawberries. Leanne is looking for blueberries and squash...harder to find now that Fall is here. But the tomatoes....the beautiful heirloom tomatoes, neither of us can resist.
And the mushrooms are plentiful and perfect.
The pears in Fall are one of my passions. We will bake them in an apple pie, or put them in a salad with roasted walnuts and Gorgonzola. The vendor here gives away whole pears to sample. Smart vendor, I bought quite a few: Bartletts, and one I have not tried called the Seckel pear.
Then there were pumpkins...beautiful pumpkins of all sizes and colors. Two very large and perfect pumpkins came home with me to rest on the front porch. And a few of the little one for my table.
The scent of fresh bread wafts deliciously through the air. Coffee and croissants are breakfast for many here.
Gourds are coming in season, and a large Butternut Squash makes it into my bag.
Coming home and unloading all of my bags is always heartwarming. The girls and I decide what we will make for dinner.
Dinner later that night is Potato Leek Soup and a salad of fresh baby greens with avocado, oranges and roasted pine nuts. A day well spent.
For more information about the Sacramento Farmer's Market click here. It is the largest Farmer's Market in the region. As one of the vendors aptly put it, "it is the Grand Daddy of Farmer's Markets". Perhaps, most importantly, it is locally grown....and that is a good thing.

An Architectural Alphabet
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic
Remember how we all raved- for months- about Andrew Zega and Bernd Dams' Chinoiseries? Well, hold on to your hats because they are back with a new book that I think might be one of their best yet!
An Architectural Alphabet (Connaissance et Mémoires) is the new limited-edition artist's book that features the duo's watercolors of the alphabet. Each letter is featured in an architectural or garden related scene. In fact, a few lucky letters are painted against backdrops of Chinoiserie follies. How great is that?
The new book, with a forward by none other than Charlotte Moss (I told you this was good!), is hand-bound in silk, numbered, and slip-cased. Forget the jewelry, baubles, trinkets, and bibelots- this is what I want for Christmas. I better start writing Santa right now.
Cynthia Conigliaro and Will Rogers of Archivia Books and Catherine Cormery of Connaissance et Mémoires are hosting a book party where Zega and Dams' new book as well as some of their recent watercolors will be featured. The event takes place at Archivia Books on Thursday, November 20 from 6 until 8pm. To RSVP, call 212-570-9565.

Auroville, Pondicherry
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
My door obssession in Pondicherry, when I didn't have a digital camera, scanned from old photographs:-)
The history of Pondicherry can be traced back to 1672 when the French bought this port town from an India King. The French connection grew when Sri Aurobindo an Indian scholar & mystic set up an ashram here in 1926. Mira Alfassa his French-born spiritual companion, also known as 'The Mother' established Auroville in the sixties.
Image of Matrimandir in Auroville.Auroville is a series of self-supporting communities in villages which are very close to Pondicherry. Auroville's New Age ideal drew many Indians & Westerners including French architect Roger Anger who was the chief architect of the township of Auroville.
Featured here are a couple of homes from Auroville.
A fusion of natural & modern home of Frenchman Jean Legrand & wife Joy.
Natural light streaming in through the circular shapes on the ceiling and that is echoed by the natural rocks & granite slabs in Legrand's bathroom.
Love the angular and circular shapes of the kitchen & dining area, which has been designed keeping the light in mind.Home of designer William Netter, an American Spiritualist and Sri Aurobindo follower.
The white-tiled kitchen with simple modern lines and ample natural light.
The design here is Minimalist with areas designated for different purposes. Here is the space for praying with 'The Mother's' and Sri Aurobindo's photographs with a votive candle burning in the centre and his work space.
A house designed by French architect Roger Anger for Christine Devin & her husband in 1976 in a design resembling toadstool shapes.
Beautifully designed circular bedroom with movable slats to adjust light & air flow. Love the red-oxide smooth flooring and a simple portrait of the Mother on the wall.
Locally made paper lantern and couple of floor cushions & wooden chest adorn the dining area. I absolutely love the shape of the windows ( reminds me of railway train windows:-)The township at Auroville is heaven for architects from India & abroad trying to create something different, something new. You can read more about the various styles of architecture in Auroville here.

Lots ‘o Video of the 2008 Dwell NextHouse, Silicon Valley
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® BloSo, you are still dwelling (ha!) on the fact that you missed the open house for the 2008 Dwell Home in Mountain View, yeah? Well, dwell no further. Kohler’s snazzy video team created a dozen or so videos featuring all the design elements of the space including discussion from the owners of the home as well as lead designer, Sally Kuchar. There are 13 videos in all (yes, I’ve watched every second of them!) so you can get a solid sense for what the place looked like in March.
While doing so keep an eye out for guest appearances from some of our DP products…a.k.a. 0.00125 seconds of fame for the Blu Dot Animal Sofa, the Fatboy room, a Zid Zid poof, Blu Dot D2 Utility Shelving, Amenity pillows, upper playground pillows, k studio pillows, a STAACH table and chairs, among others…
Here are a few of my favorite flicks:
“How all the cooks in the kitchen created a unified look”…
and…the “unique spaces” feature:

If I were a house .....
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire
Long time readers will remember a series of posts I did featuring rooms that spoke so much to me that I could see myself not only in them but as them. I had the same longing to "be" a place when I first saw this Creekside Guest House by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The firm is well known and respected for their consideration of place and user, the meaning and sensibilities, the possibilities and sensitivity. Their portfolio is diverse as is expected from a large firm but it is this simple yet refined building which not only addresses but embraces its site that took my breath away. I love it. I want to live in it. Take the time to view their work particularly their residential, renovation and adaptive reuse projects. They are truly a gifted firm.

As seen on DominoMagazine.comOver the last year, we've seen a lot of the gray and yellow color combination. I know several of my fellow bloggers have done posts about this combo as well. And yet... I just can't wrap my head around it.
I thought if I pulled together several images and really immersed myself in the palette, I might warm up to it.
Click here to view all images and then come back to tell us how you feel about this popular color combination.

1st Dibs - Doing the planet a favor
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: ::Surroundings::
Have you been on 1st Dibs recently? I've been a big fan of this site for a few years and I'm just so impressed with how they've grown. Their in depth content has made them them a real go-to site for the decorative arts. And, they are clearly not resting on their laurels. They recently launched an Estate and Fine Jewelry section (talk about a drool fest) and will be launching a partnership with the Art and Antique dealers of America in November. There's more to come as well. See below and go visit them online.

One of their features that I hope they bring back soon is the Top 30 Click List. This is a monthly roundup of the most popular hits on their site. In other words - what real people are looking at. This is their List for June. Hope to see more 1st Dibs!

Who Turned Out the Lights?!?!? Evangeline's.....
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedidI've heard the mansion is haunted. I've heard there are spirits here and events that can not be explained. Perhaps this is the place where the spell originated. The place where, once one enters, one is enchanted forever. The place that has all of Sacramento, and places beyond, in it's power. For, in the months before All Hallow's Eve, people come. They come and cannot help but leave changed. And once they have come, they cannot but return, year after year. The place is called Evangeline's.
When one encounters the entrance to the mansion, one can choose to risk the ancient elevator with the iron door. I have seen some enter, and I cannot say I have seen them again.
But the tentative may choose to climb the stair to the inner chambers of the mansion.
At first, it may seem like a beautiful and magical place.
But......when one approaches another stair....things start to seem a little bit more....sinister.
One might feel a bit comforted by the fact that a woman is dressed like Minnie Mouse sits on a ledge half way up the stair. Until one asks, what exactly is she doing there?!
I have heard that the spirits walk these stairs. And that there are bumps...in the night.
Quickly, one is reminded that this place is not of the day...but of the night. The night the spirits come out to play, and witches dance by candlelight.
And candles shine brightly above the skulls of those that have passed before.
The Devil himself has been known to hold court.
And he is quite generous when it comes to offering up pitchforks to those unsuspecting.
The spirits are always on hand to watch the fun.
Many of the adventurous come to test their courage at the mansion. And to see the sights....the stained glass skylights and the polished wood antique bars and counters. They think they will be the ones who leave untouched with only a story to tell.
But many lose their heads.
Many are enchanted and lost in time.
But even in the past, the spirits are awake.
