if i were a bachelorette, i think i would do a vintage, fem - french country style living space. the elegance and dainty touches bring such joy to me. however, at this stage of my life, i think my husband would have a heart attack if i dressed the house in lace and floral designs!

Bathroom Furniture

10/30/2008, 11:29 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

I am very fond of placing small pieces of Antique furniture in bathrooms. I think it adds an element of coziness. It also adds interest and personality to a room which we usually don't think about furnishing.

Whether it's a small table {like above} to place some towels on & a beautiful tray with lots of perfume and lotion on for your guests or a lovely old chair upholstered in a pretty fabric, I think it's a great look.

In the Gumdale house I have been working on I suggested this concept to the client and she went with it. We painted the old pieces we found for her bathrooms white and they look fantastic.

So, if you have room for a lovely little old table or chair or even an old mirror in your bathroom my advice is...go for it!

Oh and while we're on the subject of furnishing bathrooms - I also love little paintings in bathrooms too!!

Bed, Breakfast & Fireplace...

...said a small wooden board below the name 'King's Cliff'.King's Cliff~ Yes, that's the name of one of two places we stayed during our trip to the beautiful hills of Nilgiri in Tamilnadu.

I absolutely love places with a history and this old colonial mansion which now is a hotel is charming. The well manicured green lawns with white wrought iron chairs & exotic varieties of flowers almost takes you back hundred years when butlers in white served hot cups of high grown Nilgiris tea to the 'Sahebs'. Well, they still do:-)
So we sat back and soaked in the beauty of the view of the hills through the windows of 'Earl's Secret'- The restaurant which lives up to it's reputation of serving delicious food.
Sinfully delicious brownie with ice cream & chocolate sauce which they serve you on the porch after a heavy afternoon lunch & before you doze off reading a delightful novel.

The nine rooms are named after the works of 'Shakspeare' and each comes with a fireplace. *sigh* well it's been a while since I have been near a fireplace and slept to the sound of crackling wood.
A live-band playing our all-time favourite rock numbers, the bright winter sun, the chirpy birds, the waiters serving hot tea with chocolate cream cookies... Night falls, temperature dips, peaceful silence & a knock at our door. In comes a man with chocolate-mint candies, an extra woollen quilt & firewood to light our fireplace:-)
We were in heaven:-) Sweet dreams people, next post when I wake up;-)

There's still a triffid in the house Part 2 or How retro really became rooted

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire

So many fabulous retro rooms brimming with budding beauty that I just had to share more. Time to turn the pages once again of Decorating With Plants, A House and Garden Book, by Marybeth Little Weston,The Condé Nast Publications, Pantheon Books, New York, 1978. Now I want a ficus or maybe a traveller's palm. A boston fern for the bathroom anyone?

The Armoire Is Dead

11/02/2008, 23:38 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)

The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reperts from High Point that the Armoire is dead. It is as old-fashioned as the telephone table.
...armoires were originally designed as gun cabinets. That is where they get their name. Later, when the French changed the tax code and began taxing the number of rooms, the aristocracy knocked down closet walls and replaced them with armoires or wardrobes.
Recently, meaning a five years ago, people bought armoires to hide the TV. Now, 42 to 50 inch flat screen TVs are considered status symbols, so there is a desire to show it off. Now we have media units or entertainment centers.

The latest solution is the low- to medium-height console, which is not necessarily dedicated to the flat-screen television.

"A console or buffet is a great way to anchor the flat screen, as well as a place for storage.

At Landfair Furniture, we see media centers of all styles from low credenza types to taller dresser type designs and from various vendors like Stanley, Dinec, BermanFALK, and Hammary. Come take a look at the styles on the floor and in catalogs, where you can select from many finsihes.

My younger sister's boyfriend Dave sent me a link to this video today, with the subject "Maybe this should have been your kitchen :)". My kitchen is pretty small, but not this small. Thanks Dave, but I think I'll stick to my Greentea kitchen. ;) (video via Gizmodo)

real life test kitchen: beef and cheese noodle bake

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: shelterrific

Even though my spouse affectionately refers to this as “burger helper,” I was thrilled with the outcome of this beef and noodle bake recipe from Cooking Light. It’s not nearly as decadent as it looks. First you saute some finely chopped carrots, onions and garlic with ground sirloin. Add a cup of tomato sauce. Then you mix that together with some cooked elbow macaroni. Pour it into a casserole dish. Then, make a cheese sauce on the stove with one cup of milk, a pinch of nutmeg, a touch of flour and lots of cheese (you can use 1% milk and reduced fat cheese if you care about such things). Pour that onto the pasta mixture, cover that with some more grated cheese and bake for about 20 minutes at 350. Before I added the cheese mixture, I pulled some of the tomato, beef noodle mixture out — it tasted great just like that — and chopped it up in the food processor for Isadora. She loved it! And, when the final dish was dolloped out, we loved that, too. Even better the next day for leftovers! Click here for full recipe. — Angela M.

Meet Lola And A Story

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: k style
Hey Kstylers. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and a fun New Years. Meet Lola, my friend C's grandog. She was the star of the Sorry Tree party this year and definitely won the prize for best dressed. Unfortunaly our xmas went a bit sideways this year and here's why!
After the party we arrived home and realized we had forgotten to give waterboy a key as he was with friends so my husband didn't lock our car door thinking he would have to go out and retrieve said child. As it turned out he was just a few houses away and so walked home. But the problem and I mean BIG problem was that R forgot that he hadn't locked the car door and so we all went to bed thinking we were all locked up safe and sound. Oh and did I mention that I had gone online before bed just to check my email and unwind after party placing my laptop on the floor next to my chair as I always do. And btw my chair sits right by our xmas tree and our first floor living room is adjacent to the master bedroom all on the main level of our house.
So here is where the storey gets dicey. We woke up a bit late the following morning, my husband first and I here him say in an a sort of frantic tone. "Baby, I think we've been robbed." I ask him how he knows this from the bedroom which is only a few feet away. He says fairly calmly "because your laptop is gone and so are most of our xmas presents." At this point I cannot fathom that we are actually having this conversation, but unfortunately we are. And so as we now understand the robbers got into our car, took our garage door opener, quickly opened the door just enough to slide under came into our house while we sleeping a few feet away, took my laptop and the power cord, and all of the xmas presents that looked like they might contain ipods. In fact they got two. Then they slid back out the way they came. We never heard a thing. How scary is that??
Now you might question where we live. But no, we live in an outstanding neighborhood with great neighbors and very nice new homes. We have learned that there have been a rash of such robberies in our area and several of them have also occurred while people were sleeping and the mo has almost consistently been entering via the garage door opener.
So Kstylers the good news is that none of us were hurt. And our insurance will ultimately replace our lost items. But I lost pretty much EVERYTHING on my computer as I had not backed up recently. Devastating from my design and blogging perspective. I had thousands of resource files and well you know how it is. So it will be awhile before I am up to blogging snuff. I do have my new computer but no photoshop yet and I haven't even begun to replace the resource files so important to blogging. So hang in there with me. And please lock your cars at night and your doors during the day. talk soon, k

the greener things in life

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: red.house
http://www.storyofstuff.com/

i heart green. I have always tried to be environmentally conscious, maybe moving to the US from Sweden made me even more aware. habits that were part of the everyday in Sweden, didn't even seem to occur to people here in America. and we've all hear about global warming and gas prices every day now, and we all know that there are things that we can do to help. but sometimes you need a little kick in the butt. and that's what I got last week, when a .lovely lady. at work introduced me to this short video.

it's called .the story of stuff.

you might have seen it already, but if you haven't, I encourage you to watch it and to share it with your friends and family. it's simple and easy to understand which makes the information accessible to everyone. it shocked me, but more importantly inspired me to do more. and in this case, doing more means using less.

I am sharing this with everyone because the environment and our current situation here on earth is a very important cause to me. and I have the power through this blog to influence others. so, I have made the decision to focus more of my blogging efforts towards .the greener things in life. as I set out to educate myself about greener options for my lifestyle, I look forward to sharing it with you.

below is a good list to start with. .10 things you can do. to save on energy and resources.

Ready To Go-Go?

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Bluelines

While the biggest music release of the season will be Coldplay's Viva La Vida, it's not exactly the kind of album that will prompt non-stop dancing and fun at your summer party.

For that, you will want something that moves and sways. Chuck Brown is a perfect good-time starter.

51fyfpdvbkl_ss500_

Known as the "Godfather of Go-Go" (a musical mix of funk, R&B, and hip-hop), Chuck is over 70 and still pumping out exuberant, swaggering songs.

You won't regret picking up a classic like "Do You Know What Time It Is" along with extra ice and bug candles.

What gets your party started?

Doris Leslie Blau and Our Favorite Designers

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

I'm currently on the hunt for rugs for both my living room and dining room, and the timing couldn't be better. Why? Because Doris Leslie Blau has just introduced the new 2009 Designer Carpet Collection, and most of our favorite designers are featured. Albert Hadley, Miles Redd, Todd Romano, Markham Roberts, and 42 other designers have created modern carpet designs for this venerable company. (That's Mr. Hadley's design at top.)

I really like the range of designs. Roger Jones' carpet is very cool and elegant. Now that one would look great in my dining room, but I could also see it in a icy blue bedroom too. And the other designs? Can't you see them in living room with a Ventry Ltd. sofa, upholstered in a neutral of course, and a chrome or lucite cocktail table? I'm thinking something very Billy Baldwin. What do you think?

(The designer collection carpets are made from various materials including silk, wool, and banana-leaf fiber and come in different weaves. For more information, visit the Doris Leslie Blau website.)

A Green Remodel: Making a Cottage Modern

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® Blo

BEFORE:

TWO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT OWNERS, A GUTTING, AND 14 DUMP TRUCKS WORTH OF FILL LATER:

Hello, Cottage Living, are you reading?  When I missed my flight on Sunday I really lucked out. My friends Sophie and Kent offered me shelter in the 1940’s cottage they have been lovingly modernizing for many months. Circa 200 years ago, their neighbors would have been Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, as it is located between Monticello and Ash Lawn. It is truly one of the most beautiful spots around Charlottesville. It sits between the flood plain of Houchens Creek and beautiful woods, and when you look in out from the back, you can spy neighboring cows. Sophie and Kent are two of my pals from grad school. Kent has his Masters in Urban Planning and both of them have Masters in Landscape Architecture. Kent also has lots of experience in construction with a focus on green building, and Sophie is a kick-ass fiddler and gardener.

I wish I had some interior before pictures to show you, but unfortunately, they no longer exist. The space shown below used to be four dark, cramped rooms: A kitchen, a dining room, a bedroom and a bathroom.  S & K ripped the whole thing open and installed all new windows, which are all Low E, argon-filled sashes. The ceilings, once low and dark, were ripped out, and now they are 10′ high. The beams were restored from the original structure. The space is so peaceful and sunny that I felt like I was in one of the charming chapels that dot the landscape in the country around Charlottesville.

A very small addition that accommodates a new bathroom was added to the house’s original 840 square feet (it’s on the right side of the exterior “AFTER” photo). The floors are reclaimed heart pine, and all of the poplar siding and trim came from the Appalachian Sustainable Development mills in southwest Virginia, all of it harvested from certified-sustainable wood lots in the southern Appalachians.

I love that they used an antique dresser for storage in the bathroom:

Formerly an unused attic, Sophie and Kent opened up to the roofline and created an upstairs loft. Yours truly was not feeling confident about scaling the ladder after two margaritas, but I could see from below that it  added a lot of usable space to the house:

Here are a few more sweet nuggets:

There is a real nature study aesthetic all around the house:

While all of the walls are crisp and white, S & K’s careful editing of antiques, oriental rugs, artwork and objects add so much warmth to the modern space.

Curious about that lamp? The lovely and talented Christina Michas made the gorgeous shade for them as a wedding gift:

The house is still a work in progress, but I kind of dig these little traces of it:

New Baby New House

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Belle Vivir

A lot of wonderful things are happening to me these days. A blessing baby is on his way and with it the need for a bigger house. So we just purchased a house with this incredible view of New York City in New Jersey. This view is in every floor of the house. This may be the only perfect thing about the house since there are many things to be updated. Walls will come down, kitchen will be completely redone, floors will be refinished. I decided to make it fun and I'll be posting every milestone.

Here I decided to take down half of the wall so we can appreciate the beautiful view from the kitchen, while leaving some countertop space. The wall behind also will come down.

Here, all cabinets and appliances have been teared down.

Marrakech: and telling you what I wanted to tell you………..

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: My Marrakesh

I wanted to tell you something.  I wanted to tell you that we are out of money.  I wanted to tell you that we are limping along, that we are crawling at a snail’s pace, that we’re inching like inch worms.  I wanted to tell you that when the stock market crashed, we crashed, too.  I wanted to tell you that I am not sure when Peacock Pavilions is opening.  But it won’t be March 2009.  It will be sometime, sometime after that.  I wanted to tell you that I don’t know when it will be.  I wanted to tell you that I am disappointed, that I am very disappointed.  But I also wanted to tell you that none of it matters; that it’s just money - it’s not more than that.  I wanted to tell you that I feel lucky for what I have.  I wanted to tell you that I know that there are so many who have nothing, who have had everything taken from them.  Including their dignity.  I wanted to tell you that I think that this was meant to be.  And I am even thankful for it. Because nothing good -- yes, nothing really good -- should ever come too easily.  I wanted to tell you that I am okay.  I wanted to tell you that I am really okay most of the time.  Except for when I am not.  But those times are not so many.

I wanted to tell you so much.  But (shyly) I didn’t know how.  But now, now you know….what I wanted to tell you.

Telling you

PS Many thanks to the gypsygirl for inspiring this post.
