How did I miss this?? William Yeoward has a new book coming out at the end of this month (meaning tomorrow!)- William Yeoward on Entertaining. I loved Yeoward's first book Perfect Tables as it has provided me of lots of inspiration for styling my table.

According to the publisher, the book will feature 21 table settings AND menus, including Breakfast for Two and a Boating Lunch. Reminds me of my beloved
Tiffany Gourmet Cookbook and Tiffany Taste from the 1980s!

Trying To Convince...

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

I emailed this picture of this gorgeous fabric through to one of my lovely clients today as I thought it would be the perfect choice for her 2 old French chairs but she wasn't convinced. She is wanting a fabric which is bright and patterned with a bit of pink and some black and possibly some other colours as well. She already has some black and white stripe dining chairs and I was planning on putting it back with new white slip covered sofas with lots of colourful, mismatched, patterned scatter cushions and a few vintage furniture pieces thrown in....I'm going to keep trying as I think this fabric would be beautiful on her chairs. I'll let you know how I go!! And anyway she might just change her mind once she sees the fabric in the flesh....fingers crossed!!

52. Love to write

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

my first year in law school i worked part time for a great criminal lawyer in the heart of toronto's downtown core. it was my first time working downtown and more than anything i was excited to work in a modern toronto office, so you can imagine my surprise when my new part time boss sat me down in front of an antique type writer instead of the latest mac laptop and told me that this would be my new desk.

my love for our legal system soon faded, but my passion for antiques and that typewriter stayed. in fact, it started to grow and branch out like a wild weed in furtile soil. i had a new passion.

my part time boss had a good reason for sitting me in front of this type writer. it taught me how to be patient with my writings, to think before i acted, control, time management but the most important thing i took from it, it taught me how to appreciate the beauty, style and importance of doing things at my own pace. how rushing or slacking can ruin a great piece of writing - it taught me how to find myself within my writings.

now - almost 7 yrs after the fact, i desire to have a type writer of my own. a writing table in the corner of the room with nothing but my thoughts and an old type writer.

Bloggers in print

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
I was reading one of my weekly favorites, Creative Thursday, and just learned that there is a new magazine out called Artful Blogging.
Granted, this post is a bit of departure from my color-centric articles, but I think it's great that bloggers are getting some recognition, and want to support that effort. More and more blogs pop up every day, and it sure is hard to keep track of all the new goodies out there. I can't wait to see if anyone we know gets covered!

Todd Selby...

Just like many of you, I've also visited 'The Selby' and admire Todd's work. If I wasn't from New York City, I'd probably think many of the homes featured, were just plain WEIRD. But, since I lived in NYC for so many years, many of the homes featured look very similar to friend's places I used to frequent. So, here are some of my favorite photos by Todd Selby. Enjoy!

Simple Pleasures

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

How was your weekend? We had a very quiet weekend at home which was so lovely. Yesterday Harry and I were in the garden and we spotted some Rainbow Lorikeet's {very colourful Australian birds} in our beautiful old tree sucking the pollen & nectar out of the newly sprouted pretty orange flowers. Another sign that Spring is here!! It was so nice to spend the weekend enjoying simple pleasures just like this. What did you get up to?

Jivi Sethi

Some of you might remember I had featured Jivi Sethi's Goan home in December last year and yesterday as I flipped through the glossy pages of Elle Decor's latest edition I found myself staring at another eclectic space designed by Jivi Sethi, this time he shares his New Delhi residence.
A colonial daybed with vibrant cushions by Jivi, Sadr, Iris & Soleh. Glass paintings of Lord Hanuman & Ganesha on a Kashmiri screen.
The entrance hall to the apartment has a 'Jaali' door designed by Michael Aram.( I love the flowers hanging in lovely water filled test tubes:-)
The things that I find interesting in his spaces are the carefree use of colours, art & crafts picked up from parts of India as well as abroad. His ability to very smoothly blend the east with the west and yet create a harmonious style, I find very unique. The terrace dining table has black stone platter with patterned jasmine inlay work, sculpture by M J Enas & block print poppy table cloth by Brigitte SinghPainting by Haku Shah in the dining room, with doors salvaged from an old mansion. ( I love restorations:-)The dining table all set with black marble inlay side plates, granite & bidri work tea-light holders and old brass oil lamps from Kerala on the consoles & Italian lamp overhead provide lovely light.Seen here are Chinese Inlay and lacquer work of birds & bedside chest with Antje Weber sculpture.I am a sucker for traditional oil lamps:-)) Here is a collection of brass lamps from Tamil Nadu, lithograph of a monument on the wall, a Lord Shiva mask from Varanasi & gold plated vegetables are served on a bidri work platter from his "Design Laboratory"

It's Early, But...

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Yes, it is early. But if you have kids in your life you no doubt are already looking at Halloween costumes. Last week I was in Star Provisions, the stylish 4,000 square foot marketplace located in Atlanta's Howell Mill corridor, and spotted all sorts of skull confections.

What the store has assembled is really an homage to the traditional Mexican festival, Dia de Muertos, or "Day of the Dead." This celebration is historically held on the first two days of November and honors family members with elaborate private altars, sugar skulls, marigolds, and good fare.

Whether you are planning a Halloween party or something related to Dia de Muertos, Star Provisions has molds for these skulls as well as the actual sweets for sale. Prices range from $2.50 to $35.
The Atlanta History Center will host a Day of the Dead program in collaboration with the Instituto de Mexico and the Mexican Consulate, on Sunday, November 2 from noon to 5 p.m. Highlights will include storytelling, authentic Mexican food and music, and altars.

Star Provisions is located at 1198 Howell Mill Road, and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. (404) 365-0410. Carolyne Roehm designed the girlie Halloween with silver pumpkins shown at top.

Not just for show

I LOVE the following home that was featured on New York Social Diary a few weeks ago. It's the townhouse of Lisa Mahar, a mother of three and owner of a toy store. I think it's so great that she's got toys and photos of her kids and their artwork scattered all over, and mixed in with all sorts of mid-century classic furniture. It's a space that is perfectly comfortable and perfectly lived in. And cool.

Well, not quite yet, but it's big news nonetheless. I just found out that Emily Eerdmans, design historian and author of Classic English Design and Antiques and the upcoming release Regency Redux, has inked a deal with Rizzoli to write a monograph of that rather mysterious and iconoclastic decorator Madeleine Castaing. Are you as excited as I am??

"The World of Madeleine Castaing" is scheduled to be released sometime around Fall 2010, and Jacques Grange has agreed to write the foreword. All I can say is that it's about time.

Let's get ourselves in the mood for the book by looking at images of Castaing's Paris apartment. As Emily notes, visitors to her homes felt as though they were stepping into a Balzac novel. I can certainly see why.

Inspiring Each Other

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
[Image via Megan Arquette]

Coleen Rider can play more than one note. That is why, I think, so many of us derive inspiration from her. We love her color sense, her eye for the details, and her appreciation for both achingly pretty old things and harder-edged modern finds.

While the vignettes she composes for her shop are informed by decorating masters of the past, she always brings her own soulful California perspective to the mix. (Recent blog buzz about her new showroom has come from Megan and Jennifer.) Coleen nods to what is fashionable yet never jumps on the trend bandwagon.

Last holiday season when I saw the boutique owner's lush Christmas card, we began a conversation about her creative process with the idea that it might lead to a blog post. And this summer when Megan snapped a picture of Coleen's personal inspiration board, my imagination was sparked again so we chatted a little more.

Now Coleen is launching a creative feature for her site where she shares virtual concept boards designed to inspire visitors. First up: Moss Green and Aubergine starring Peter Dunham's textiles. The mood is woodsy and English, complete with a stately antique dog painting. Dunham's Indian-inspired fabrics add the fresh spice.

For me, Coleen's flair comes in with the addition of the the red pagoda vitrine. Others might have stuck only with purples and greens -- she knew red would vibrate here.

Soon I'll be back with words from Coleen about the direction she took for fall. In the meantime, whether you want to browse her furnishings and art, get ideas for a color scheme for your living room, or see Coleen's approach to mixing textures and patterns, be sure to check out the new Looks page. Much effort has been made to identifying all the sources.

Petersham Nurseries

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
When I saw this photograph in housemartin a couple of day back, apart from the beautiful nursery the thing that got my attention was the huge 'Urli' a traditional Indian vessel. This got me curious and I read a bit about it online, but then today I pick up one of the old issues of 'Design Today' magazine from my table, and what do I see 'Petersham Nurseries' again. So taking a cue, here I am posting about this breathtakingly beautiful nursery which is an antique store and also a cafe. Francesco and Gael Boglione the owners of Petersham Nurseries in West London have travelled extensively around the world and to India. Which can be seen in these beautiful antiques and memorabilia that they have hand-picked and displayed so well in the nursery.
Raja Ravi Varma prints & Tanjore Paintings are displayed against blinds made of natural fibres.
The cart that is used by Indian Street vendors has been used very charmingly to prop pots.
A traditional bell compliments an exotic orchid plant.
They have some Indian fabric quilts also for sale. Handcrafted stone Buddha.Carved Indian Doors.
Here is a famous brand of Indian cycle- Hero Cycles for cycling around the nursery?:-)

Whatever Martha! Interview

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® Blo

Thanks to Margot for my questions to Alexis Stewart and Jennifer Koppelman Hutt of Whatever Martha!. These email “interviews” are always a little awkward and lose the flow, but I think it’s still worth sharing. For example,I really wanted to ask them if they had been Beavis and Butthead fans, because a lot of the times their shows sound like “heh-heh, heh-heh, she said ‘balls…’” but I felt like that might come across as disrespectful, when really I had been a a huge B&B fan back in the day and meant it as sort of a compliment. But whatever, here’s the interview:

How did you two meet? When did you know that the kinds of conversations you have would be perfect for your Whatever radio show?

AS: We met in the hallway at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and soon started ordering lunch together. We knew the radio show would work when we couldn’t get people to stop listening to our conversations.

JKH: We met while I was working for my dad at MSLO and Alexis was filming The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. (As for the radio show) I still don’t know!

Alexis, at what point in your life did you find yourself able to laugh at some of your mother’s projects? She seems to be a good sport about it! Is she really laughing with you?

AS: I have always laughed (OK, sometimes cried) at some of my mother’s projects! She doesn’t mind!

How do each of you pronounce “herb” -  with a silent “h,” or do you  pronounce it like “Herb” Tarlick of “WKRP in Cincinnati?”

AS: I pronounce it with a silent “h”, although to my horror, I have found myself slipping and occasionally Jennifer has caught me saying herb with an audible H! Ugh!!

JKH: I pronounce it with a silent “h.”

Have you seen any photos of Peanut Butter lately? I wonder what he’s up to. I was also wondering if any of his face-painting victims sued, or still have nightmares.

AS: WWW.PEANUTBUTTERPEANUTBUTTER.COM

Ironically, I watched your show right after watching “The Rachel Zoe Project” and found myself wondering if Martha had a stylist during these early socks with loafers and shorts days. She wore more denim shirts than Said on “Oz.” Does she have a stylist today?

AS: No, of course she had no stylist – she definitely thought her outfits were beside the point. I don’t know what to say about the denim shirts, but lots of people copied her and they were in fashion at the time. Today, I think she has someone buy stuff for her TV show because she hates shopping for clothes.

Do you do any DIY projects at home now? What kinds of Martha-esque projects do you enjoy? Which ones will you never ever do?

AS: I don’t craft much, but occasionally I will try something, try to get it right and then give it up forever when I can’t! But I do clean my house myself and I cook a lot (check out our blogs at www.whateverradio.com).

Have you two picked out one Martha segment that stands out as the most hilarious one you’ve ever seen? Do you agree on which one that would be? Do tell!

AS: So many of them are funny and we did so many, that I really can’t remember which were the best.

JKH: Recently on her daytime show, Martha sampled hot dogs with Kevin Sharkey. It was FANTASTIC and really funny.

Thanks to Alexis and Jennifer for taking the time to answer my questions. You can catch Whatever Martha! on The Fine Living Network.

School project

06/24/2008, 00:20 | Original Site: Belle Vivir

Just wanted to share with you one of my most recent school projects.

oh, to live in a barn

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
if you've been a studio wellspring reader for a while you'll know i have this thing for barns turned in to homes. whenever i see one i get weak in the knees. it's a long time dream of mine {we're talking i've been drawing up floor plans on graph paper since 6th grade} to use modern interior design in a vintage barn. so it's always incredibly inspiring to see what others have done with similar dreams ~ to see how ingenius their concept is, or to imagine how i'd do things differently. lately i've stumbled across several great resources for aquiring & moving barns, renovating barns & decorating in barn-house style.
first off, the barn pages ~ it lists more than 200 barns for sale, which are priced according to condition. most of the barns need to be moved from the land they're on ~ which is just fine, since often barns are located in an out-of-the-way place without easy access to utilities & such. so you can buy a barn and have it disassembled and shipped to a more desired location, where it can be put back together again. or you can just use the barn timber to build something new. it's a fantastic recycling concept, isn't it?
for help with the restoration and reassembly of barns, check out the barn people in vermont, berkshire barns in massachusetts, and the new jersey barn company. they've all been dismantling, restoring and reassembling vintage barns for over twenty-five years. even if your favorite barn isn't in the north east, they would still be great resources for any project location.
for lots of lovely barn related decor items & furnishings, the barn house blog is a lovely place to visit.
and to take part in a blogger's project of turning a barn into a modern home, check out bare hill barn ~ it's fascinating.
lastly, some eye candy from the barn pages:

54. Motherhood

i just celebrated my 28th birthday. i know i may seem young to some but for as long as i can remember, i thought at this age i would be married with a great job carrying around 1 or 2 kids. 2-3 isn't that bad...

we've been trying for a little over a year now with no luck. we're making an appointment with our doc this week to see if there's anything wrong with either of us, fingers crossed that it's just a matter of time and nothing serious. even if we can't have children of our own, we've always talked about adopting so all is not lost. but i would love to experience being a mother, carrying a child and giving birth to new life...

See You Soon!

I'm taking the next few days off because I'm still quite ill but I will meet you here again in a few days once I'm back to my 100% Holly self again and then it's full steam ahead! :)

I've been battling the flu for over 10 days now and the doctor told me that I won't kick it until I stop working and just sleep... So that's what I plan to do. But I should feel better soon and when I do, I'll return with lots of lovely product submissions to share along with another office redux so I'll meet you back here in a few days. Thank you so much for understanding!
