Illustration Love...

Today , I share with you works of two amazing artists whose styles are so diverse from each other but have touched my heart in very special ways.Neend Meein
Kalyani Ganapathy is an artist/ illustrator, whose work has a profusion of vibrant colours, patterns and has a traditional Indian folk-art feel to it. ponnuku malli poo asai translated 'A little girl likes jasmine flowers'

Kalyani has started a new venture called 'Kye' which means hand. Here you will find unique handmade products like cushion covers, bags, dinner plates and trays. Do check it out!

The most striking feature in most of her illustrations are the 'eyes' of her characters, they seem to express so many different emotions!Yama
She uses colours also beautifully just to give that extra punch.* Sigh*

I am still under the spell of the amazing works by these two extremely talented artists. Hope you enjoyed their work as much as I did showcasing them.:-)

We got hooked on inter railing last year and have just come back after three weeks in Paris, Portugal and Spain. Wow! Our budget was rather tight but this year we spent more money on accommodation, partly because the youth hostels were fully booked and partly because it's so restful ...

48. Happy Birthday Husband

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

like many women, my husband has a shoe fetish. but unlike many women, his passion for shoes does not come from the specific shade of red or the height of the heels and tag that lies inside, rather his passion falls on high top, limited edition air force ones!

for his 33rd birthday yesterday, i managed to pull myself together to purchase him this CB25 limited edition $300 shoes that i know he will never wear! why would i do such a think you might ask yourself - simply because i love him and he would never expect a cheap arsh like myself to ever put down that kind of money for something that will never be utilized! so this post goes out to my husband...

happy birthday baby

Top Design Junkyard

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® Blo

Quick Question: Does anyone know the name of the L.A. “junkyard” where the contestants shopped on Top Design last night? The above shot of my TV is the only clue I have, and I tried to zoom in on the sign, but it was all a blur! I want to be able to share the information here - it looked like an amazing place full of architectural artifacts, vintage light fixtures, amazing iron gates, etc. In short, it looked like HEAVEN! What seemed like hell was only having an hour to spend there. I couldn’t believe people (well, at least the chick I’ve named “Vegas Baby” were complaining about shopping there! Bravotv.com is no help whatsoever; I’ve read every blog and every detail about the episode trying to figure it out for you all.

Black & Spiro Today

Here are a few new things we have in store at Black & Spiro. As we are heading into Summer here in Australia my current favourite thing in the shop are our new, very own, red, white and blue vintage ladies swimming cushions put back with red and white or blue and white ticking they'd be so perfect for a beach house or even better a pool house!! I actually love them placed with our red and white Hawaiian cushions too!!

Top Design Starts Tonight!

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® Blo

Just a quick reminder that Top Design starts on Bravo tonight (10 p.m. on the east coast; as for the rest of you, I don’t know). Apparently they have retooled the show and added the fabulous India Hicks as the host. Jonathan Adler, Margaret Russell, and Kelly Wearstler will be returning as judges, and I believe Todd Oldham will be returning as a studio critic. I enjoyed the show last year but had a ton of constructive (and not so constructive) criticism to offer; it will be interesting to see how they have changed it. I hope they branch out from the PDC with some creative challenges, and that they don’t have another garage decorating challenge that is a thinly veiled advertisement for an SUV. Anyway, we’ll be dishing about the show tomorrow on decor8, so come on over and join in if you want to add your two cents.

Speaking of very obvious vehicular product placement, did anyone catch last week’s Project Runway? I was on vacation without cable so I just caught it last night. All I could think about was how ridiculously heavy my Harvey seatbelt bag is and that Korto’s seatbelt coat must have weighed about 100 pounds. It is really flippin’ cool though; I don’t think Korto has had a bad design hair day yet; she has REALLY got it going on. You might have missed it, as she seems to be a nice, normal person with normal color hair who doesn’t have diva fits, add “-licious” to the end of every word, live in a tanning bed, make snide comments about her competitors or talk about herself in the third person (Hey Suede, you sound like Jimmy on Seinfeld!).

While I’m on the topic of design tv, I have a tiny teaser from The Fine Living Network. It’s a sneak peek into their new show, Whatever, Martha, which premieres on September 16th at 9:00 p.m. Click here for clips. Alexis seems cool and well-adjusted, in spite of having a perfectionist mother. She also has really cute hair.

All right, I’m off to set my DVR.

Two (Terribly Missed) Fat Ladies

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Bluelines

I recieved an email the other day bearing some of the best news I've heard in weeks.

One of my favorite culinary TV series, "Two Fat Ladies," is finally coming to DVD!

Newtwofat_ladies

For anyone who doesn't remember this fantastic British show (which aired back when Giada's decollete was just a glimmer in some TV executive's eye), there's still reason to check it out.

Don't expect healthy twists or 30-minute meals here. Instead, prepare to ride off with Jennifer Paterson and Clarissa Dickson Wright (by motorcycle and sidecar, naturalement) around Britain (and beyond) to prepare seriously hearty meals.

How about joining a hunting party in Scotland for a menu that includes roast grouse and venison with blackberries (episode 5)? Or perhaps you'd enjoy making lobster for a sisterhood of Benedictine nuns in Ireland (episode 14). Soused herrings, Welsh rarebit souffle, onion soup with Stilton, fruit tartlets...the list goes on.

These aren't all recipes that you'd likely rush out and make, but that's not really the point. The settings are verdant and the ladies are undeniably charming, entertaining, and passionate about food.

Even though the show itself is dated, it's novel and refreshing to see them, polar opposites of the squeaky-clean, book-deal-sniffing personae of today's food TV stars, preparing honest food without pretension.

Welsh Rarebit Souffle
Ingredients:
2 large slices of good-quality white bread
1/2 pound of high-quality, aged cheddar cheese
    3 egg yolks
    4 egg whites
1 level teaspoon dry English mustard
1 vigorous shake of Worcestershire sauce
1 vigorous shake of Tabasco sauce
    Salt and Pepper

Grate the cheese and place in a bowl. Beat in the egg yolks, a level teaspoon of mustard, a good shake each of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce, and salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Toast the bread; whip the egg whites until they stand in stiff peaks. Add a spoonful or so of the beaten egg whites into tothe cheese mixture then gently fold the rest of the egg whites into the bowl. Put the toasts into an ovenproof dish and pour the mixture over them. Bake in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes until browned and risen. Serve at once with a salad or spinach on the side.

Recipe reprinted from the Two Fat Ladies DVD box set, Acorn Media, 2008.

Etsy Find of the Day: Handmade Wilderness Project

These resin-and-paper trophy deer heads from Etsy seller Ruby's Lounge take the current craze for taxidermy and deer iconography to a surreal level. I love their colorfulness and humor -- and, of course, the fact that no actual deer was harmed in their creation.

Rainbow of room hues

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
Oh, how I love to see colorful spaces done well. Domino magazine has an online gallery up of beautiful bright rooms in a rainbow of fruit flavors.
"Theatrical color can distract from flaws. Confederate Red draws the eye from the unassuming laminate cabinets in this rental kitchen."
Be sure to read the little description next to each picture- it's useful to read about the effect they were looking to achieve, or the specific challenges of a particular color.

Looking at examples of how colors work together is a great way to get ideas for your own space. Worried about that deep rich eggplant color in your dining room? Look for examples of how others have handled that color. You may get an idea you hadn't thought of before!

JBL Control Now Speakers

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Home Design| Decorating Home | Interior Design | Furniture Inspiration

JBL just launched a new set of speakers that are uniquely shaped to provide multiple installation options depending upon your space. They are called the Control Now speakers and they are priced at around $250 each ($280 for an outdoor version). The Control NOW speakers feature a quarter-round shape which means the speakers can be mounted between a ceiling and a wall or between two walls, or horizontally/vertically on the bookshelf, a few examples of how these speakers can be used you can see in the image below. The 8-Ohm speakers offer a frequency response from 80 Hz to 30 KHz, and can handle up to 300 Watts at peak, although 150 Watts is a more realistic maximum power. The speakers offer an integrated 2000 Hz crossover that divides the work between the main drivers and the 3/4-inch high-frequency horn, and they feature removable push terminals for connecting speaker cabling. You can buy them from here. - Via - Gearcrave & 71grandos

Continuing tales of Dar Beida guesthouse: also known as where to stay in Essouira

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: My Marrakesh

Oh yes, of course, she loved Marrakech.  After all, this blog wasn't called My Essaouira was it?  But there really was something about this coastal town that made her want to sell everything and become a gypsy.  And Essaouira's multitude charms seemed to be thrown into high relief when staying at the beauteous Dar Beida.

Now she had given you a glimpse of Dar Beida's loveliness before.  But that was by no means all........There was more, you see.  Much more.

Dar E 1 Now that's really quite a fantastical chair -- very Ethnic Nautical, don't you think? (ahem, what do you mean that's not a genre?).  oooh, and with that curtain!

D E 2

And somehow the chair paired with this preppy striped blanket (Habitat) and leather and raffia Tuareg carpet was just right.  And look at that beamed roof!

D E 3

Dar Beida was a house for readers or perusers or simply flippers of pages.  The bookshelves were well stocked and the design magazines were abundant (including all those delicious, expensive mags from the UK) ..........Why ever leave?

D E 4

One of the bedrooms had a mezzanine all its own.  How very fun.  Did she mention that the owners had designed the fab felt rugs themselves? Sigh, these over-industrious creative types.....

D E 6

A darling little salon with white leather poufs, African art, and one of the house's grotto like fireplaces........

D E 5 Eeek, she could barely stand the fabulousness of this room, which was really an inner courtyard.   The swing (!),  the amazing signage, the fanciful candelabra, and that mod coffee table.  Really, living in a place like this could take ten years off of you, don't you think?

D E 7 oh, all the quirky little details...........like these vintage toys displayed over a generous CD collection.

D E 9 Real Saarinen, real Jacobsen, real Panton..........thrown together in the very most casual manner.  And don't even get her started on the oversized Tunisian birdcage found in the souk somehow (?!) .

D E 8 And to the other side.........the cuisine, where one could cook, or in the blogging girl's case, pretend to cook..........

D E 11 The blogging girl loved this.....oh, don't get all fidgety -- no animals were harmed for this montage:  they were all found in the Sahara desert.

D E 12

Well.......she was off to sit on the terrace, under the ahem, Ethnic Nautical gazebo (that the owners had built themselves in a fit of over-achievement:))

Dar Beida, Essaouira, rented in its entirety

Farewell Morning Tea

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

One of my lovely girls finished working at Black & Spiro today. It was time for her to move on and I must say I was very sad to see her go. We had a special morning tea for her this morning to bid her farewell. I couldn't help posting the gorgeous cake we had made for her by Sharnel at The Cupcake Company. It was so gorgeous!! I loved the navy and white grosgrain ribbon she used around the base of the cake and the Camellia flower on the top was beautiful!!

When a bouquet is not just a flower arrangement

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
I just heard from reader Casey, who wrote to give me the heads-up about a fabulous floral artist, David Stark, who created an amazing display for the Macy's Flower Show "Bouquet of the Day".
I'm told that most event designers participating in the event chose traditional interpretations of floral decor. David took it in a different direction with a birch paintbrush and 6-foot tower of red carnations and paint cans.
It's a pretty bold use of color in a space dominated by spring pastels. I want to know how on earth he got the paint brush to "hover" like that. Must be attached with strings to the ceiling, wouldn't you imagine?

Have you ever heard of the Macy's Flower Show? Evidently, it's a pretty big deal, with cities like New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Minneapolis participating. It took place over the last two weeks (Sunday, March 16th – Sunday, March 30th).

Here are some pictures from this year's event:
Such edible colors, I love the bright oranges and yellows paired with the more subdued green.
images source
Pink and green-you just can't go wrong with this pairing. I'm sure it was quite amazing in person.

I get a great deal of inspiration from natural elements like flowers. The vibrant brights, delicate pastels, deep green foliage, soft rich browns... mother nature really knows how to create some spectacular color palettes. It's simple to take colors from a bouquet, for instance, and apply them to an interior.
This example is a little bold for most people's taste, but it works for this large room, to help break up an otherwise overwhelming space, and add a sense of intimacy. Certainly took guts and vision, that's for sure!

Recreating your favorite franchise at home

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
Randomly surfing the variety of design discussion forums out there, I found a posting on HGTV's discussion board that "revealed" several of Panera Bread's interior wall colors. I never knew they were top secret, but I can't tell you how many times I have had a client ask for their colors. Instead of using these exact colors, I steer people towards using colors appropriate for their particular spaces that may be evocative of this franchise's visual look.
That warm orangey color is from Benjamin Moore called Golden harvest 2157-02

It's great to find inspiration in spaces you love, but don't get hung up on what color was used exactly. I want to tear my hair out when I read shelter magazines stating this or that designer's favorite paint colors, giving you the exact paint brand and code, as though you can replicate their design simply by using their color choices. Colors will vary dramatically based on the context of how they are used.
House Beautiful magazine

The gold color on the right is evidently Ben Moore Semolina#2155-40, just for your reference.
Love the blue and orange combo-isn't it cheerful? And really plays up the warm honey tones in the breads. These were the only pics I was able to snap at my local Panera Bread, as evidently, picture- taking in the store is not permitted. I was quickly asked to put my camera away. Probably didn't help that I was toting this enormous camera with large lenses... Not the most subtle of approaches- I don't think I'd make a very good spy!
