Jivi Sethi

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
Some of you might remember I had featured Jivi Sethi's Goan home in December last year and yesterday as I flipped through the glossy pages of Elle Decor's latest edition I found myself staring at another eclectic space designed by Jivi Sethi, this time he shares his New Delhi residence.
A colonial daybed with vibrant cushions by Jivi, Sadr, Iris & Soleh. Glass paintings of Lord Hanuman & Ganesha on a Kashmiri screen.
The entrance hall to the apartment has a 'Jaali' door designed by Michael Aram.( I love the flowers hanging in lovely water filled test tubes:-)
The things that I find interesting in his spaces are the carefree use of colours, art & crafts picked up from parts of India as well as abroad. His ability to very smoothly blend the east with the west and yet create a harmonious style, I find very unique. The terrace dining table has black stone platter with patterned jasmine inlay work, sculpture by M J Enas & block print poppy table cloth by Brigitte SinghPainting by Haku Shah in the dining room, with doors salvaged from an old mansion. ( I love restorations:-)The dining table all set with black marble inlay side plates, granite & bidri work tea-light holders and old brass oil lamps from Kerala on the consoles & Italian lamp overhead provide lovely light.Seen here are Chinese Inlay and lacquer work of birds & bedside chest with Antje Weber sculpture.I am a sucker for traditional oil lamps:-)) Here is a collection of brass lamps from Tamil Nadu, lithograph of a monument on the wall, a Lord Shiva mask from Varanasi & gold plated vegetables are served on a bidri work platter from his "Design Laboratory"

74. For the love of BLACK

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

black and be a daunting color to work with, especially on walls but for some reason I've always been drawn to the dark allure of black interiors. it's sexy, dramatic and so out of the norm.

so you can imagine my excitement when my client mentioned last night that she wanted to incorporate some sort of black in her space! at first i thought she meant black furnishings but when i realized she wanted more - on the walls, on the floors, on the stairs or where ever my heart desired, my eyes widen and my heart started skipping beats ... could i be hearing this right? I have the opportunity to live out my black interior dreams through her? and so start my quest to find the most inspiring black spaces.

The Artful Home: Jhina Alvarado

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: More Ways to Waste Tim
This is a guest post from my friend Linda Weber, a writer and editor, home stager and designer, and artist in San Francisco. Linda often pings me with great art finds, so I'm thrilled that she agreed to share some of them here. Take it away, Linda!

Two years ago, I was messing around online when I stumbled on San Francisco artist Jhina Alvarado's encaustic paintings. Instant art crush. (What can I say? We all have our design addictions, and art is mine.)

"Intuitive" was the first word that sprang to mind when I attempted to describe Alvarado’s work. And when I visited her studio recently, she echoed the assessment: Not only do Alvarado’s creations look intuitive, that's exactly how she works. "I never know what a piece is going to be when I start it," she says.

What I love about encaustic artwork – which is created with oil-based pigments combined with wax – is its dreamy, layered quality. That’s exactly what drew Alvarado to the medium. "You can build translucency and create depth with the wax," she says.

She also likes the way you can use the wax to transfer images. Alvarado draws leaves, branches, and other images freehand on paper, for instance, before laying the paper against the wax. She then applies pressure to the back of the paper, rubbing repeatedly until the markings transfer to the wax. I'm a fan of Alvarado’s pared-down color palettes, too – she gravitates toward turquoises, ambers, greens, and saturated blues against a white or soft gray background.

Prices for Alvarado’s originals range from $225 for an eight-by-eight-inch painting to $1,500 for a 30-by-30-inch piece, with various options in between. And while I can't afford a large one anytime soon, that doesn't mean I’m going to stop dreaming about them.

See more of Alvarado’s work right here.

Politically inspired...

I came across these cute 5 x 7 screen prints via Orange Beautiful's The Scoop blog. Even if you aren't voting for Obama or your undecided, these are pretty darn COOL! Whats even better is 100% of the proceeds from this print will be donated to Obama For America Campaign. I applaud him for his efforts, I love when people become inspired enough to help a cause. The prints are by Joshua Wentz and produced by Sidedown. Get your own print here.

A few words from Sidedown: For us, this election is about our right as American citizens to choice. We want to live in a country that accepts its people... ALL of them. A country that believes in the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence as they pertain to the freedom of all who reside here, and that does not discriminate against its citizens on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious creed, social status, or station.

We do not believe this is a matter of Democrat vs. Republican. When Abraham Lincoln became our first Republican president, he redefined the way our nation saw itself, and reshaped what it meant to be "an American". If one lawyer, Illinois statesman, and member of Congress can do as much for the country as he did, we'd like to see what a second one can do.
Both candidates will tell you that in November, you have a choice to make. Only one of them would allow you to make choices after the election is over. That's why you should tell them to "Make Mine Barack".

Cool Stuff: Factory 20

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: More Ways to Waste Tim
I discovered Factory 20 this morning via Another Shade of Grey (which -- yay! -- is back and going strong after a mysterious and much-lamented 7-month absence from the blogosphere). This store is most definitely getting bookmarked.

Located in Sterling, Virginia, Factory 20 is a brick-and-mortar boutique and online shop with an incredible selection of vintage furniture, lighting, objects, and art. Midcentury minimalist items are mixed in with gorgeously timeworn primitive pieces and vintage industrial wares (a current all-consuming obsession of mine). Prices aren't bargain-basement, but aren't insane, either -- and some items are downright reasonable. The shop also offers worldwide shipping.

My Factory 20 faves (sorry about the volume here -- I'm just going gaga for practically everything in stock):

Vintage Basic Flat File, $295

Industrial Modern Wine Racks, $465 each

Paul McCobb Iron Side Chairs, $225 for the pair

Paul McCobb Brass Shelving Unit, $1,285

Streamline Wall Mount Desk, $265

Vintage Walnut Gothic Chairs, $425 for eight

Russel Wright Floor Lamps, $1,435 for the pair

Vintage Exit Sign Table Lamp, $135

1960s Artisan Pottery Lamp, $265

French Articulating Floor Lamp, $395

Holiday: Gumps

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

I was in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago for a book signing event ( more on the next week!) which was being held at the beautiful Gump's store near Union Square. These are some of the photos I took. Above is one of the many spectacular table displays on the second floor where the China and crystal are kept. I thought it was very festive for a Fall dinner or Thanksgiving.

Furniture is also on display in these wonderful vignettes. I love the color combination here with the burnt orange walls and dark grey silk on the Bergere chair and ottoman. The Moroccan tables definitely are on my wish list.

I love the large Foo dogs in this picture arranged with the sofa and live edged coffee table.

I think this "room" was my favorite with the black lacquered display etagere with the blue interior. I like the idea of two matching chairs with different fabrics. And the area rug, luscious silk!

Isn't this an amazing display of over scaled lanterns? If you are in San Francisco at all during the Holiday Season, do stop in at Gumps. The assortment of Christmas ornaments is to die for, and there is bound to be more than just one thing you won't be able to live without!

And if you are in the TV watching mood on your Turkey Day, stop on by:

Planning Ahead, Week II

One of my favorite parts of Julia Reed's book, Ham Biscuits, Hostess Gowns, and Other Southern Specialties: An Entertaining Life, is the description of her grandparents pulling up the driveway in December in a gray Cadillac overflowing with chess pies and silver-and-gold-wrapped presents. (Not to mention kitchen counters laden with tins of cayenne pepper-laced cheese straws.) Substitute a Buick for the Cadillac, add several dozen bourbon balls, and the memory is almost an exact match for my own.

If you are thinking about giving homemade food this year, there are some great recipes and festive ideas in Julia's book. Stylish presentation options abound too: The Container Store sells crisp white food-safe tins that would look good with a red grosgrain ribbon, or stripes or traditional plaid. If you prefer gold or silver tins, try Specialty Bottle. The selection here is vast.

Professional food grade, grease proof waxed tissue is available in an array of colors at Fancy Flours online retail shop.

I'll probably be addressing my cards and packages with a simple pen, but if you are inclined to use convenient printed mailing labels, iomoi has such pretty choices. To celebrate The First Emperor, I selected a chinoiserie label, above second from the top. The gift tags are from Kate Spade and the ribbon can be found at M & J.

Here are two different approaches to making bourbon balls: a recipe adapted by Louisvillian Jennifer Ahearn. And a version made for the Tennessee premiere party for Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown. I will add that my grandmother used far more bourbon than the caterers did.

Click here for an interactive map of legendary Southern foods with companion story written by John T. Edge or go directly to McEntyre's for the cheese straws.

While we're on the subject of gift wrap, look at the sumptuous mix of colors and patterns used by Jayson Home. As you can read, free shipping is offered through December.

Jayson's blue paper dove ornaments are hard to resist.

Doris Leslie Blau and Our Favorite Designers

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

I'm currently on the hunt for rugs for both my living room and dining room, and the timing couldn't be better. Why? Because Doris Leslie Blau has just introduced the new 2009 Designer Carpet Collection, and most of our favorite designers are featured. Albert Hadley, Miles Redd, Todd Romano, Markham Roberts, and 42 other designers have created modern carpet designs for this venerable company. (That's Mr. Hadley's design at top.)

I really like the range of designs. Roger Jones' carpet is very cool and elegant. Now that one would look great in my dining room, but I could also see it in a icy blue bedroom too. And the other designs? Can't you see them in living room with a Ventry Ltd. sofa, upholstered in a neutral of course, and a chrome or lucite cocktail table? I'm thinking something very Billy Baldwin. What do you think?

(The designer collection carpets are made from various materials including silk, wool, and banana-leaf fiber and come in different weaves. For more information, visit the Doris Leslie Blau website.)

I'm sure you can tell by this post that I'm needing a doggie fix right now. Especially in lieu of our recent robbery I am definitely craving something soft and furry and "ferocious" in a good way. I saw one of these gorgoeus soaps from Gianna Rose Atelier while out to lunch in neighboring Jacksonville this weekend and the detail and the packaging are really outstanding. The perfect gift, especially for k.

If you've got time to spare and want to hear me babble (on and on) about how I got started with my business(es) and what I've been doing over the past 9 years, I recently did a podcast with Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood of CraftSanity. I have to say that I actually enjoyed doing this podcast because it felt more like a conversation with friend than a press interview.

I also did a podcast several months ago with Chronicle Books. I was kinda nervous when I did that interview. Okay, why couldn't I remember what I covered in my book?! Seriously. There were some definite deer-in-the-headlights, crickets-a-chirping moments during that interview. Thank goodness it wasn't live. Thank goodness is wasn't filmed. And thank goodness for the magic of editing so that I seem like a competent book author. Um, really, I am!

Chronpd

I'm still getting used to doing these broadcast interviews and I tend to get all self-critical when I listen to myself speak, so I haven't actually listened to either podcast yet. But trust me, you should--you'll either walk away with some quasi-interesting information about me or maybe even some laughs at my expense. Either way, it's good times.

Arrival of cabinets

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire
This blog chronicles my entire kitchen renovation from start to finish. Greentea Design has provided me with their solid wood kitchen cabinets, and I'm taking care of the rest.

If you'd like to be brought up to date, check out my kitchen remodel blog for an archive of previous posts. I posted recently about the flooring, and now.....the cabinets have arrived!!!

I was sooooooooo excited for the day the cabinets were to arrive. Since Greentea Design is based in Toronto, I had only seen the cabinets on their website, and got a tiny sample (about 3 inches) sent to me in the mail to help with my countertop selection. Friday was the day....and it turned out to be bright and early. There was a bit of chaos early that morning as I scrambled to get some extra hands out to my house ASAP to help me unload the truck, but was quickly forgotten once I got a glimpse of the cabinets. The unloading only took about 20 minutes (once they got a system going it was easy peasy). I wasn't able to take photos of them being unloaded because it was raining that day. The first photo I managed to take was of all the cabinets stacked in the living room.

The cabinets were left there for the majority of the day because I wanted to get the walls and ceiling painted before getting the cabinets in place (turns out the walls weren't ready and needed more sanding - but we found this out after 3 coats of paint and after the electrician got the potlights working). For several hours the cats had a ball climbing all over them.

WOW - they were packed so carefully. I worked for moving companies for a few summers during my university years and I have never seen anything packed like that. For each cabinet there was styrofoam on the corners, then a box that wrapped all the way around, then moving blankets wrapped and taped (with perfect corners, like how us women wrap presents), and then shrink-wrapped. It was like Christmas morning unwrapping each piece. And not a scratch or mark on any piece. What a relief!
