Can classic black ever really be replaced?
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: HueEvidently, it's being touted as the "new black". Here's my take on the concept- black will never be replaced. Colors will come and go in trends, but we'll always have our staples like black, white, brown, neutrals.
In any case, it's refreshing to see variations of violet being embraced in the marketplace. In the past, it's been one of the least-used colors for marketing because it's so hard to pin down. Sandwiched in between red and blue, violet can swing in two radically different directions. Blue violets have similar characteristics to blue- calm, dependable, trustworthy, rational, cool. Red violets, on the other hand, tend to adopt those traits more like its companion red- active, strong, passionate, hot.

Plum TV is a a channel available in resort communities like Aspen, the Hamptons, and Martha's Vineyard.
“Plum says calm; plum says clean; plum says health,” said a rep at Penta Water in Carlsbad, Calif. “Other products in the water category are blue, clear, red,” he added. “This color came out as a consistent representation of vitality, a pure product.” source
Redplum couponsWhat fascinates me is the reinforcement of the color with the name. All these companies seem to feel they must attach the word "plum" to their products in order to get across their meaning. I think alot of that comes from the ambivalence of the color's attributes. Plum can range anywhere on the spectrum of violets, and perhaps without the term "plum", could be misconstrued as having different characteristics from those marketers hoped to convey.
In the article, a marketer reinforces this issue:
“When we were looking at the color of the plastic (during the planning stages), we wanted something classy and sophisticated, and the choice was a shade we called 'burgundy.' " But the company did not want to call it burgundy when marketing it, he added, for fear of confusion with wine brands. What's your take on the trend? Do you think these companies need the word "plum" to drive home the point of using this color for their product or service? What do you think of when you see the color?

In case you missed it last year this interesting magazine, known in part for its beautiful art direction, photographed fall fashions on location at the Dorothy Draper-designed Greenbrier. Isn't that a great shot? Except for the hairstyle it's a bit Betty Draper (as in Mad Men, no relation to Dorothy). This fall another arresting view of the West Virginia luxury resort will be seen on the cover of Emily Eerdman's highly anticipated Regency Redux. (Click here to read Jennifer Dwyer's preview of the book.)
Emily and I have a mutual passion for art history, so recently I asked her to share a few of her favorite films that showcase Regency style. She has delightful insights, including points about the connection between Hollywood Regency and challenging economic times. I'll be back shortly to post them.Giada's Kitchen

Fall should bring a new version of Giada's program on Food Network. For many of us, half the appeal of the original has been checking out all the pretty things -- plates, cookware -- used on set. Some of the earthy handmade ceramics chosen for Giada's kitchen came from a potter located not far from me, Rebecca Wood of R. Wood Studio in Athens, Georgia.Erin Cee

A marvellous collection of bags designed by Erin Cychmistruk of Erin Cee...
Erin is an incredibly gifted Vancouver artist who works with a multitude of mediums such as textiles, wood & fabric wall panels, illustrations, and mono-prints & intaglio prints (top: Weeds, cloth batik). I find her collection of bags especially appealing (I *love* to collect big, fabulous bags this time of year!!). They are made from cotton and linen, and each bag goes through several processes of waxing, dyeing and silk-screening.... her designs are so whimsical and fun! I absolutely adore...

Blogging Pink for a Worthy Cause

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, many design bloggers have decided to post Pink today. So, in support of a very worthy cause and in the spirit of camaraderie, I decided to mine my trove of vintage magazines for pink images. We've all heard that pink is a universally flattering color, and if it works on your face then why not on your walls, beds, and furniture too? And pink is not just for women either. Men seem to love it too.

The unique weaved sculptures of Canadian artist Dawn MacNutt. The formations are interpretations of featureless human figures or large architectonic columns created from natural and non-traditional materials. Her compelling life-size willow, grapevine, seagrass or bronze works (sometimes upwards of 12' tall!) are used for outdoor installations, sculpture gardens, and indoor spaces. I like how the bits of copper glisten out from the interlaced basketry in her works...

Another post on block-print? Well, I am so taken by these beautiful Indian Kalamkari inspired designs by Mary Mulcahy, the one behind Les Indiennes.
I am sure many of you are aware of the amazing line of products by Les Indiennes, but what I really liked is use of just one or two colours, using Kalamkari technique which traditionally uses multiple colours.
Kalamkari is an ancient Indian Art which involves dyeing of sun-bleached cotton fabrics with natural dyes and then hand-block printing with carved wooden blocks.
Les Indiennes has products in various materials like fabric, paper & felt.
You can view & buy their products online and get inspired by these dreamy images in their Inspirational Flip Book.Watch out for these blogs...

Soft ambient Japanese lights from Kozai Designs in Vancouver on West 6th Avenue.
Designer Toshiyuki Tani has developed a very contemporary line of gorgeous lights utilizing traditional Japanese woodcraft techniques. His Wappa series of pendant and floor lamps employ bent cedar from Akita in northern Japan. The Mocoro table lamp is a cylinder of soft ambient light nestled within a layered globe of turned Japanese hemlock disks. And his newest light, the very delicate Sen, is hand-built from many hundreds of tiny strips of bamboo by traditional bamboo craftsmen in Shizuoka prefecture.

: : found these wonderful and warm kitchen pieces by architect .knud kapper. for .hansen living. when I was browsing .inhabitat. today. beautiful pieces in oak, maple and teak. the first image is called an instant kitchen meant for studios and small apartments, just hook it up to water and electricity and you have a kitchen ready.
and I fell in love with the yellow on the walls in the last photo. I like the contrast between the yellow and white, and the yellow is so warm, reminds me of spring......or maybe I'm just in easter mode.

When I reference my friend Millie, I tend to favor the longer description: Fellow Atlantan, design blogger and community arts volunteer, Brilliant Asylum. She just put together a lovely little post on Bravo's Top Design participant and ever so resourceful Martha Stewart Living Senior Style Editor, Eddie Ross.I'm so happy to be aware of his inspiring blog. If you enjoyed this past post, or this one, (or if you ever watched Eric Pike decorate his own Christmas tree) I think you will enjoy Eddie's ideas and finds.

1. The web is a wonderful tool to lend a helping contribution when needed. Julie left a comment on our post about the Nie Nie benefit to tell us of her own fund raising call to action. She wrote: “The tragedy that has happened to Stephanie and Christian has turned into a beautiful wellspring of hope and love…. Unfortunately, I know first-hand of the cost of extensive medical bills. My daughter, Alyson, is three years old and has been diagnosed with Leukemia. A friend, Marina, is an Etsy vendor and has put together a shop to help us pay for her three-year-long treatments… If anyone would be kind enough to visit the shop at alysonscure.etsy.com or leave Alyson a little “Love Note” via her blog at alyson.mystyl.us. Any support, whether financial or emotional is always greatly appreciated.” Be sure to check out Alyson’s Cure on Etsy. There’s some lovely artwork and jewelry up for grabs.
2. A lot of you are happy to be homeowners, especially during this economic crisis, though all the money talk does get ya down. seanSF says: “I’m really tired of having my home evaluated by a dollar amount. Yes, it is an investment. Yes, I want to get my money’s worth. But we didn’t buy our house with either of those thoughts primarily in our mind. It was a home, first and foremost. A place to live, get to know each other better, raise a family, have family and friends over for dinners and vacations and whenever they’re in need.” See what others have to say about the current housing crisis and leave your own comments here.
3. Halloween is not the only time of year to appreciate creepy design. As Katherine says of these skeleton serving forks: “Be bold enough to use them year-round! I love creepy stuff like this. It works well when in contrast to an otherwise bright & beautiful place. Love it!”
4. You know some great online resources for buying fabrics. Lanny T. shares one suggestion: “The best place (and I have done a lot of looking) to buy fabrics is an online fabric store called iluvfabrix.com. They have incredibly beautiful fabrics on their site all the time, and there always seems to be some sort of sale going on.” Click here to see more suggestions for upholstery fabric stores.
5. When trying to decide a new paint color for room, trying looking in your closet for inspiration. As J recommends: “What colors do you wear a lot? That has always been a good starting point for me. Actually it was what color does my husband wear a lot: he had an affection for the bland until I painted a wall a deep blue-gray that he wore, and now he’s totally into color.” See more ideas for choosing a paint color here.

Adding Colorful Accents into a White Danish Home
09/10/2008, 13:21 | Original Site: Home Design| Decorating Home | Interior Design | Furniture InspirationThere is something about Scandinavian interior designers because most of the homes I’ve seen use white in excess, but not this Danish home. With a very good mix of modern and classic, and a lot of white furnishings it still managed to amazed me when I saw how they used colorful accents to suppress all that white. Some of the things I really love about it, includes the kitchen flooring, the simple living room, those pillows and the working space with the red chairs.
Even though they are visual details, if I were to change something, it would be the pictures on the walls. Great for all those looking for inspiration for their kitchen or on how to use as much white as possible.

i am a book lover. classics, nonfiction, educational, entertaining, children's, antiques, contemporaries. . . . . i love to be in rooms filled with them all. i like books so much that i'm one of the only people i know who still has & uses public library cards. back in college the favorite place to find me was in our gorgeous campus library, and i still enjoy spending time amongst shelves & piles of tomes. i'm sure i've mentioned this before, but i also harbor a secret desire to someday have a phd in library sciences {ya know, when i'm an old woman & am ready to slow down from the hustle & bustle of the high-end design world but still want a lot of mental stimulation}.

and another favorite is the great journeys series ~ tales from all across the ages for anyone yearning for adventures. . . . .
