Flooring
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspireIf you'd like to be brought up to date, check out my kitchen remodel blog for an archive of previous posts. I posted recently about some final sketches Greentea created for me and some decisions I've made. Now for the flooring.
One of the steps to this renovation that I was super excited about was getting new flooring. When I first moved into this house I knew I would eventually knock the wall down separating the living room from the kitchen, and continue the same flooring throughout. Since I love the look of painted hardwood, I decided to paint the existing hardwood in the living room (I detested the oak colour) and get hardwood installed in the kitchen and paint it the same colour. I was so excited to see the tiles go that I had lived with since last December (beyond gross). I'll stick a before photo here as a reminder:

As I mentionned in a previous post, the contractor spent alot of time levelling the floor, because it dipped from one end to the other by several inches.

Initially the contractor was going to purchase unfinished hardwood to lay in the kitchen. But when he went to pick it up, he said there were alot of knots showing and was worried it would show through the paint. So he went with finished flooring. And he purchased boxes of various colours that were leftovers from previous customer orders, so it only ended up costing $1.99/sq.ft. When they started laying it, we all got a kick out of the different colours and thought it looked pretty cool.

As you can see in the last photo, because the floor involved some layers to get it level, the kitchen is now a little step up from the living room. The contractor put a nice curved finishing piece on the edge.

I found some photos on Kelley's website we haven't posted before of an open-air porch. Love the boldness of the black and white with red accents. The space has such a fabulous Hollywood Regency feel.

Update
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: k styleThank you all for your kind words of encouragement for my mother. She is holding her own although it is really one day at a time for her and for us. I am also involved in a huge design project for my oldest son who lives in Mexico and has started a relatively new endeavor there. I have showed you the logo I designed for him but now we are adding a fullscale website and it has been a monumental task.
I hope to finish this project in the next few weeks and then I would hope to be able resume Kstyle. Thank you all for staying with me and know that I really miss participating in the design blogging community. When I can I will be back. Take care and talk soon,k
See How They Wrap III

She says, "It it super lightweight, affordable, and comes in tons of colors. I like to layer different complimetary colors -- it's a bit transparent." At Sew-Biz, seam binding costs roughly $3 for 75 yards. Gemma also enjoys using a single chandelier crystal to "fancy up a gift or a Christmas tree!" The replacement piece below is $1.50 at chandelierparts.com.
Last year she made her own wrapping paper from a photograph of trees on a snowy hillside in Colorado. Non-copyrighted images can usually be blown-up onto wide sheets of paper at your neighborhood Kinko's (now called FedEx Office). Gemma requested black-and-white for graphic punch.
Muslin is another alternative to traditional paper that Gemma sometimes uses. She gathers the material at the top of the box for volume. At JoAnn fabric stores muslin costs about $1.50 per yard.A Green Remodel: Making a Cottage Modern
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® BloBEFORE:
TWO LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT OWNERS, A GUTTING, AND 14 DUMP TRUCKS WORTH OF FILL LATER:
Hello, Cottage Living, are you reading? When I missed my flight on Sunday I really lucked out. My friends Sophie and Kent offered me shelter in the 1940’s cottage they have been lovingly modernizing for many months. Circa 200 years ago, their neighbors would have been Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, as it is located between Monticello and Ash Lawn. It is truly one of the most beautiful spots around Charlottesville. It sits between the flood plain of Houchens Creek and beautiful woods, and when you look in out from the back, you can spy neighboring cows. Sophie and Kent are two of my pals from grad school. Kent has his Masters in Urban Planning and both of them have Masters in Landscape Architecture. Kent also has lots of experience in construction with a focus on green building, and Sophie is a kick-ass fiddler and gardener.
I wish I had some interior before pictures to show you, but unfortunately, they no longer exist. The space shown below used to be four dark, cramped rooms: A kitchen, a dining room, a bedroom and a bathroom. S & K ripped the whole thing open and installed all new windows, which are all Low E, argon-filled sashes. The ceilings, once low and dark, were ripped out, and now they are 10′ high. The beams were restored from the original structure. The space is so peaceful and sunny that I felt like I was in one of the charming chapels that dot the landscape in the country around Charlottesville.
A very small addition that accommodates a new bathroom was added to the house’s original 840 square feet (it’s on the right side of the exterior “AFTER” photo). The floors are reclaimed heart pine, and all of the poplar siding and trim came from the Appalachian Sustainable Development mills in southwest Virginia, all of it harvested from certified-sustainable wood lots in the southern Appalachians.
I love that they used an antique dresser for storage in the bathroom:
Formerly an unused attic, Sophie and Kent opened up to the roofline and created an upstairs loft. Yours truly was not feeling confident about scaling the ladder after two margaritas, but I could see from below that it added a lot of usable space to the house:
Here are a few more sweet nuggets:
There is a real nature study aesthetic all around the house:
While all of the walls are crisp and white, S & K’s careful editing of antiques, oriental rugs, artwork and objects add so much warmth to the modern space.
Curious about that lamp? The lovely and talented Christina Michas made the gorgeous shade for them as a wedding gift:
The house is still a work in progress, but I kind of dig these little traces of it:

Marrakech daytrip: It took me soooo long to find out....
11/17/2008, 09:03 | Original Site: My MarrakeshIt was one of those days in Marrakech, the kind where you really couldn't believe it was already November. And so they set off for Moroccan adventures of the rustic kind. There were 11 adults and 11 children and 1 dog. (They tried to round up another 10 dogs for a perfect math equation but, sadly, they ran out of time.)
They picked a spot not far away but far enough away that it felt far away (do you follow?).
Oh loveliness....
They hung their bags in the outdoor closet.
And they set up a very fancy grill.
They broke out picnic baskets....
And set plates on the blogging girl's vintage Berber blankets (those Berbers.........such excellent picnic-ers).
There were delicious things to eat.
And cooked surprises to share...
With bellies full, they then went in search of adventure, around the lake and into the thickets....
They were richly rewarded for their efforts.
They wrapped their treasures carefully....as one must with precious things.
And only one little boy fell in the lake. All in all, quite a success....
Then they packed up and drove off ...........
into the Moroccan sunset (well, of course....)

Stalking in Melbourne
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire
Today I'm stalking the streets of Fitzroy, an inner city suburb of Melbourne (and perhaps my favourite area in that city). This is the architect's own home. Which architect the real estate agent neglects to tell us but we are informed it has 4 bedrooms, open plan living, indoor outdoor living and intelligent design. I love the sense of continuity between the living areas and the garden so important in Australian houses. It's a normal working day here in Australia but I know that the States are celebrating Thanksgiving (not a holiday we have here). I hope you all have a wonderful time with your family today but if you're a Thanksgiving orphan or all "familied" out then pop on over and join me later for a virtual drink in this backyard. This is by far one of the most amazing stores I have ever stepped foot in... Fan Tan Gallery located in Victoria's historic Chinatown, just steps away from the famous 5-foot-wide Fan Tan Alley. Bette Patrick and her son Alan are the shopkeepers and maintain a superb home décor store. I don't think I have ever seen a more remarkable merchandise display that changes *weekly* (see a post I did back in February showcasing some fabulous examples).
It is always a treat to stop in for a browse whenever I go for a pitterpatter downtown. And Coal the gorgeous cat is sure to greet you at the door, or at the cash register (sooo darling!).

Gift box
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: desire to inspire
Aussie wonder architect Scott Weston sent us a little gift box via email. Oh Scott you shouldn't have! You're spoiling us. (Just pop Scott's name in the search box on the left to see how generous he has been already.) Here's what he had to say...
"We end up doing the most intriguing commissions for our Clients. Australia's Harper's Bazaar wanted a unique selling tool that targeted their advertisers for an upcoming magazine. They had heard we do intricate Concept Boxes and came to us to devise twin boxes that could be taken to advertisers as a seductive selling tool. In each box we have replicated a runway of the Bazaar Collections and have models representing the various luxury brands Hermes, Burberry etc. For each specific presentation the model is magnetised and can be fitted into the box and when the box is opened the focus is on that particular brand. All models are located in a separate magnetised box a bit like the Chinese terracotta soldiers awaiting their turn on the catwalk. On completion of the presentation it elegantly folds away leaving them wanting more!"
Scott, you and your team produce the most amazing presentation tools I've ever seen. Your boxes and models are a treat. Just when I didn't think your could top your Nagata Salon model you create this treasure. It's like grown up paper dolls!

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: BluelinesWhile the biggest music release of the season will be Coldplay's Viva La Vida, it's not exactly the kind of album that will prompt non-stop dancing and fun at your summer party.
For that, you will want something that moves and sways. Chuck Brown is a perfect good-time starter.
Known as the "Godfather of Go-Go" (a musical mix of funk, R&B, and hip-hop), Chuck is over 70 and still pumping out exuberant, swaggering songs.
You won't regret picking up a classic like "Do You Know What Time It Is" along with extra ice and bug candles.
What gets your party started?

Mark Your Calendar: Bella Bigsby at August
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: More Ways to Waste Tim
It's interesting how traditional galleries are no longer the sole provenance of art shows -- more and more boutiques, it seems, are also turning their wall space over to notable local and even national artists.San Francisco, of course, has several great home shops that double as stellar art spaces, including Rare Device, the Curiosity Shoppe, Park Life, BellJar, and others. Here in the East Bay, Relish at Home, Mignonne, FiveTen Studio, Vessel, and the Gardener also host regular art shows.
As far as I know, though, it's still pretty unusual for clothing boutiques to moonlight as art galleries. But that hasn't stopped August, a chic fashion retailer on Oakland's College Avenue, from featuring some really great local art. And although my skinny-jean-sporting days are long past, I often pop into August just to admire the store's lovely artwork and stunning decor.
This month, August hosts new work from British ex-pat Bella Bigsby (previously blogged here), whose melancholy landscapes and nature studies will take your breath away. There's an artist reception from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight, November 12, and the show will be up at August through the end of the month.
Check out more of Bigsby's art right here.Alan, The Gallant
11/26/2008, 15:00 | Original Site: ::Surroundings::
Okay - first off - how cool is the name Alan, The Gallant? It conjures up chivalrous images of raincoats laid over puddles, doors held and gentlemen standing to great a lady. Sigh... ok, am back from my daydream. But, seriously - how pretty are these graphics designed by, yes - Alan, The Gallant - a Barcelona based design firm which creates these beautiful graphics.
Topo Azul, handmade designde patterns - is an organic approach to the art of painted wallpaper. A style that plays with lo-fi but in the end is revealed as a high quality product with a fresh and contemporary sensibility. This handmade pattern was created from the concept of freedom of lines. Heterogeneous forms are unified by using the same color. it reminds of the beauty that exists in the chaos and the randomness.
Artist Ana Montiel has designed TOPO AZUL as well as our other wallpaper collections. Since her early beginnings, she was fascinated while drawing different shapes (vs. patterns) and forms, not knowing that her fixation at the time would evolve into beautiful patterns for Pattern Tales®.

I love the soft, gentle quality of these designs. A little vintage-y in feel, without being stuffy.
