Bedrooms, The Art Of Placement

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Design Mind

Feng Shui literally translates to wind and water. It's the art of placement of furniture and objects so as to have good flow of chi or energy, and nowhere is this idea more important than the bedroom. Even if you don't subscribe to the chi theory, Feng Shui is an excellent tool in interior design, especially modern interior design. Happy, Happy Summer!

"Summer set lip to earth's bosom bare,
And left the flushed print in a poppy there"
~ Francis Thompson

I'm still breathing... deeply and fully. (;
Enjoying the song of this splendid season. I have temporarily put aside my favourite toys to savour this dreamy and magical time of year. I will be out and about this season, so I wish everyone's summer to be filled with beauty, love and light.
There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart... Namasté!

Recreating your favorite franchise at home

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
Randomly surfing the variety of design discussion forums out there, I found a posting on HGTV's discussion board that "revealed" several of Panera Bread's interior wall colors. I never knew they were top secret, but I can't tell you how many times I have had a client ask for their colors. Instead of using these exact colors, I steer people towards using colors appropriate for their particular spaces that may be evocative of this franchise's visual look.
That warm orangey color is from Benjamin Moore called Golden harvest 2157-02

It's great to find inspiration in spaces you love, but don't get hung up on what color was used exactly. I want to tear my hair out when I read shelter magazines stating this or that designer's favorite paint colors, giving you the exact paint brand and code, as though you can replicate their design simply by using their color choices. Colors will vary dramatically based on the context of how they are used.
House Beautiful magazine

The gold color on the right is evidently Ben Moore Semolina#2155-40, just for your reference.
Love the blue and orange combo-isn't it cheerful? And really plays up the warm honey tones in the breads. These were the only pics I was able to snap at my local Panera Bread, as evidently, picture- taking in the store is not permitted. I was quickly asked to put my camera away. Probably didn't help that I was toting this enormous camera with large lenses... Not the most subtle of approaches- I don't think I'd make a very good spy!

KID Friendly & Unique

07/21/2008, 22:20 | Original Site: MadeByGirl
I've always loved the NYTimes and used to pick it up when I lived in NYC. I even added their app. onto my iPhone to keep me updated on the news. Besides news, they have a great section on their site called Home & Garden. That is where I came across Pamela Bell's children-friendly home. Pamela who was an original partner in the Kate Spade brand, owns a beautiful east village town house in which she decided to create a more kid friendly environment without sacrificing style! From the looks of it, I think she suceeded, don't you??

*above, Pamela's daughter , invited her classmates to decorate their sofas by using paint. What an interesting way to spice up a living room! As for me, I haven't decided what fabric to use on my new sofa, but this is kind of neat! Maybe I could invite some neighborhood kids over to do this for me. Just kidding! Although, I think it looks great! What do you think of this idea?? Would you let your children in on the decor of your home like this?

Thumbtack Press {gorgeousness}

04/25/2008, 00:33 | Original Site: decor8
Here are some fabulous prints that caught my attention today over at Thumbtack Press, who happens to have a very strong collection of prints online featuring the work of some of my favorite artists. I'm hoping that you'll enjoy them along with me. :)

I adore Bride Diving by Penelope Dullaghan and Gossip by Chris Silas Neal. I always seem to go for images of girls jumping, not because I secretly have thoughts of suicide or anything (he he), more because I am constantly jumping into new things and love the thrill of just getting involved in something I'm passionate about. Also shown above is Bluebell by Lilly Piri and Presagio di Primavera by Gianluca Folě. Drool.

Long Beach Shoreline by Shiho Nakaza, I Miss You Already by Jared Drew Moody, Angel by Irana Douer, and This Flooded World by Sarajo Frieden. Isn't Irana amazing?

The Great Flood Series (set of 3) by Oksana Badrak, Spam One-Liners: Happy Life by Linzie Hunter (fun!), HiFi by Chris Silas Neal, and India Dawn by Oksana Badrak.

And finally, Don't You Leave Me Here by Matthew Woodson. Isn't this a melancholy, tender, emotionally charged glimpse into the life of the modern relationship? We all have fears of being abandoned at times and I think artist Matthew Woodson did such a great job capturing this emotion here.

Emirates Air: and the case of missing compassion

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: My Marrakesh
Emirates air The blogging girl started off on her journey. In the car she stapled documents, she wrote emails, she made phone calls. But she felt uneasy, somehow. There was a lurking feeling that she had forgotten something, something important.

At the airport, the person behind the Emirates Air counter told her coolly that her flight (EK 0752) was delayed, which would mean that she would miss her ongoing flight and would have to spend six hours in the middle of the night in the Dubai airport. The girl protested but the Emirates Air representative looked past her and called “Next”.

The hours passed at the Casablanca airport. The blogging girl’s Emirates Air meal voucher only entitled her to a drink though her delayed flight didn’t leave until 4 in the afternoon; Emirates Air apparently thought it best to save money at times like this.

Finally on the plane, the girl poured herself a glass of red wine, placing it on the pull down plastic tray before her. It was a few minutes later that the man sitting in front of her jerked his seat forward, spilling the entire bottle of red wine on her lap. She cried out.  The passenger looked back, saw what had happened but said nothing and turned away. The girl mopped herself up as best as she could with wet towels. Wet and cold, she ate her dinner. It was somewhere during the pasta bolognese that the tears began to stream down the girl’s face. The tall, blond air hostess walking down the aisle saw her weeping. Then she looked away and passed her by. And so began the girl’s journey to Bahrain…..

P.S. It turns out that the important thing that the blogging girl had forgotten was her camera battery. Sigh, no pictures of this journey….

Pattern Magic Vol. 2

03/19/2008, 17:40 | Original Site: designer's library

Pattern

Alright. Since Lisa's told me that she's "tired of looking at the computer wires" on the previous post (and really, so am I)--I've finally put together a new post. Things have been super busy lately and because of all the work I've been producing over the past month and half, it's given me some carpal tunnel issues. Great. So I've had to limit my computer work, like blog posting.

But anyway, I got this book called Pattern Magic Vol. 2 a few months ago. While I don't plan on making any of these pieces (I don't know how to sew and the wearability of some of the pieces are totally questionable--like the bottom image), I was intrigued by the sculptural and architectural forms of the clothes. Really beautiful pieces.

today’s second before and after is a great example of what a little paint and fabric can do. natalie hansen of steamed artichoke studio sent in this great lamp makeover project that cost her only $12! she found the lamp base and lampshade at a thrift store in san francisco and then spray-painted the base and wire with high-gloss white paint and covered the lampshade with amy butler fabric and ribbon from peapod fabrics. all it was required was paint, a hot glue gun, spray mount and a little elbow grease. thanks to natalie for sharing!

Amazing Landscape Architecture : Namba Parks

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Home Design| Decorating Home | Interior Design | Furniture Inspiration

Namba Parks is a really amazing piece of architecture, a place where you’ll spend half your time shopping and the other half admiring the design. It stands where Osaka’s baseball stadium used to be until 2003, and consists of a 30-floor skyscraper, Parks Tower, and 120-tenant shopping mall which includes many restaurants and a cinema. The eight floors of terraced gardens, boutique stores, big brands and trendy dining have been an instant hit in shopping-mad Osaka. In addition to providing a highly visible green component in a city where nature is sparse, the sloping park connects to the street, welcoming passers-by to enjoy its groves of trees, clusters of rocks, cliffs, lawn, streams, waterfalls, ponds and outdoor terraces.

Namba ParksBeneath the park, a canyon carves an experiential path through specialty retail, entertainment and dining venues. Namba Parks creates a new natural experience for Osaka that celebrates the interaction of people, culture and recreation. The project was so successful that Namba Parks construction is already underway for an extension - almost doubling the facility and due for completion in the middle of 2007. Finally this project is so amazing, that personally I would include it as the 8th wonder of the world. - Namba Parks on Wikipedia & Namba Parks website + Images at higher resolution - 1, 2

Get Simone's Look!!

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

I've had such a lovely response to my House Tour post from yesterday. Thank you everyone who either left me a comment here at ABT or emailed me directly. It was so lovely to hear from you. The obvious thing we all loved in Simone & Richard's house was the framed vintage swimsuits. What a fantastic idea for a beach house. Simone purchased all of these swimsuits on Ebay so keep your eyes peeled!!

In response to yesterday's post I thought it would be fun to put together a few things currently available on Ebay which would be similar things Simone would have purchased when decorating her house. Enjoy my selections and take a leaf from Simone's book - don't pay too much for anything vintage as there will always be something else just around the corner!!

Note - Click on label under each picture to be directed to the item listing on Ebay.

Correction: Serge Mouille

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

House Beautiful Sept. 2007, Photo by Don Freeman
Hi all! I wanted to make a correction to an earlier post I did about the very beautiful light fixtures designed by Serge Mouille. I recently received a very nice email from the Jean-Philippe, a representative for the Serge Mouille company. Jean Philippe kindly supplied the correct information regarding the representation for the Serge Mouille light fixtures in the USA:

"Hi Katie,I read your entire blog "David Weeks vs. Serge Mouille" and your input is very interesting. However, I need to bring a correction as to who is representing the Mouille licensed re-edition in the USA. "Inside Modern Living" represents the re-edition in Canada only. The USA is being covered by GUERIDON, a New York based store selling European mid-century furniture. Gin Mouille contracted GUERIDON to be both her representative and distributor for the USA. I think it would be nice if you could redirect your link to http://www.gueridon.com/.I will leave the debate of David Weeks vs. Serge Mouille open. Representing the Mouille lighting collection, my input would not be partial of course. Even though David Weeks admitted to me of being "very inspired"Âť by the Serge Mouille lamps, he still designed lamps of his own without copying them. Congratulations for your blog, it brings an interesting comparison between the lamps I had never seen before. Jean-Philippe "

Thank you to Jean Philippe!

Tea'd Off

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid
Getting sick really puts me over the edge. It is generally miserable, and I pout alot. But when I am over the hump of feeling fatal and on the upswing again, there is nothing I like better than English Breakfast Tea and toast. There is a pretty fabulous tea shop in Sacramento called Hina's, and it very different than you might expect:

They carry over 300 kinds of tea and some amazing tea ware and accessories. But it's the design of the space that I find so intriguing.

Contemporary and relaxed,

....with a sprinkling of tea leaves on the ceiling. Check out their website here for information for you tea aficionados who can't get enough.

Another great article about tea, it's history, tea related furniture and tea ware, be sure to check out the article on 1st Dibs: Tea Tables and Tea Drinking Equipage by Louise Devinish. Very interesting:

HERE is some more tea trivia to set you all straight.

Color Catastrophe

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
This just in from reader Holly:
She got this image in some product literature that a carpet rep brought in and wanted to share it with us.
Can you imagine sitting through a meeting in that conference room? It seems like it would be very agitating. And then the hallway...the complete opposite extreme! Grey upon beige upon taupe?
I concur, this space would not be one I would want to spend any period of time trying to concentrate in. Yikes! It would be fun to see what other horrible color mishaps people can find. Let's start a collection of what not to do with color- send in your best examples and we can vote on the worst!

Designers include Phoebe Howard, Suzanne Kasler, Liz Williams, Gretchen Edwards, Stan Topol, Jared Paul, Mallory Mathison, Carole Weaks, Scott Laslie, and many more. Modernize Your Bathroom

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Design Mind

Updating a bathroom with a modern look doesn't have to mean gutting the room and starting over. To get a lot of bang for your buck, consider changing out the sink as the main focus of a bathroom redo. Make sure you pick a modern faucet and replace your shower or tub faucet with a matching one and you will have an economical new look. A new paint job and modern accessories complete the design. These are some examples of bathrooms with modern sinks and accessories that can be applied to any basic bathroom.
