Designers Guild, Autumn 2008

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

As we go into the weekend, I wanted to leave you with the dreamy images of The Royal Collection, Fabrics and Wallpaper, the newest from Designers Guild.

Inspired by the interiors of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, and by the art in the Royal Collection, this collection is a creation of luxurious fantasy.

Designers Guild was given access to the archive of historic fabrics and wallcoverings and has come up with their own interpretation of sumptuous embroidered silks, velvet jacquard velvets and flocked wallpapers.

The Arabella Autumn Winter Collection also makes it's appearance with a fairytail-like collection:

Dream a little dream this weekend!

Additional Note: I received an email from Sophie Trinder with a reminder that the whole collection can be viewed here. And in answer to Aesthete's Lament comment, the collection was indeed photographed at Buckingham Palace. A link to the Royal Collection with more information about the Palace can be reached here.

HAPPY WEEKEND!

: : it's been a week since we returned from Sweden already. I look at the photos every day wishing I was still sitting on the dock by the sauna with my feet in the water. the two weeks we did spend at home were wonderful! .Iz. spoke Swedish the whole time! He deserves an award. There were family olympic tournaments, croquet championships, water ballet, sailing, kayaking, tennis, golf. And a lot of time spent eating and drinking, enjoying the company of relatives and friends. I will share more photos soon. This past week of work has been very hectic though and I've barely unpacked my suitcase.

I'm hoping for a few more weeks of sunny warm weather here in Boston, summer ain't over yet!

Where to eat in the Kasbah, aka:Tatchibana, a tale of a Marrakech restaurant

the coziest nook...

They couldn't wait to see what culinary delights the Japanese chef might prepare.....

Why, like this fresh fish salad..........

And the tenderest tenderloin .......

Topped off with a little scrumptious cheese cake....

And after dinner, a seat in the garden....

Hannah's Room

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

If you have been reading Katiedid for awhile, you know I have been working on my younger daughter's bedroom, theoretically for her birthday. Well, her birthday has come and gone, and we are still not quite done. I can manage to get client's work done and meet a deadline at work, but at home.....the cobbler's shoe syndrome takes over. We have drapery panels to hang, a mirror to find, and art to hang. But the furniture is all in and the room is painted! Progress!

In the meantime, my older daughter had a party for Halloween. Which prompted a room cleaning. I thought I would take the very infrequent opportunity of a clean room to snap some photos. Just so I can remember what it looks like.

Hannah and I did her room a few years ago starting with the Marimekko "Unikko" Duvet Cover and shams as the jump off point. We chose a matlisse bedspread from Crate and Barrel with matching Euro shams for the "background". You probably recognize the Seagrass headboard from Pottery Barn. The nightstand is an antique Swedish pine table. Nate Berkus lamps from Linens and Things. Red drapery panels from IKEA. We chose things that a teenage girl could grow with that were affordable, and therefore changeable if tastes changed.

Above her antique pine dresser, I placed a flea market mirror that I painted red which made it pop off the walls, which are painted Dunn Edwards Whisper White.

The room is divided by French doors into two parts, the main bedroom (very small) and a sun room. It is a very charming space and one of the selling points when we were first looking to buy the house. As soon as Hannah saw this space she claimed first dibs.

The sun room is covered with bead board on the walls and ceiling and has windows on three walls. We made it into a cozy library using West Elm book shelves, which fit perfectly under the windows. There is an old pine armoire for storage....and Heaven knows a teenage girl has got to have storage. We used West Elm red lacquer nesting tables, a white slip covered chair from IKEA and a lambskin rug on the floor.

And that's it! A fun bright space for my teenage girl.

Speaking of Nate Berkus.......now that Linens and Things is closing, I was wondering where he might be selling his retail products. It turns out he is offering his line on the HSN website. He is also writing a blog for the website as well, which you can check out here. I went and did a little looking around and found THE mirror for my other daughter's bedroom! The Nate Berkus Moroccan Mirror:

Perfect size and price! I am determined to get this room done before.......Christmas!

Relishing Regency Redux

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

On to another book review...

I have posted a few articles about my anticipation of the release of
Regency Redux by Emily Eerdmans. And now that I've received my advance copy, all I can say is "instant classic". I'm actually suffering a bit of those post-reading doldrums- you know, that down feeling you get when you've finished a book that was pure joy to read. No matter because I might just read it again this week!

Eerdmans begins her book by giving the reader a brief history of the English Regency and French Empire styles- an important starting point as the 20th century interpretations of Regency are based on these two similar styles. Then, it's on to explore all of the different sub-genres of 20th century Regency. There's Neoclassical Moderne, Vogue Regency, Hollywood Regency, and Decorator Regency. I'm being a bit vague here as I don't want to spoil it for you, but let me just say that each distinct style is explored in great detail- and with copious amounts of scrumptious photographs (meaning... I want the furniture and interiors featured in this book.)

Also, the gang's all here, with Draper, Fowler, McMillen, Maugham, Arbus, Leleu, and others being prominently featured. And as the Regency look played such an important role in Hollywood cinema of the 1930s and 40s, there are scores and scores of movie stills that are a delight to see.

Now, I must say that I was prone to like this book as 1930s and 40s design suits my aesthetic. But no matter what your style is, if you're interested in classical, modern, traditional, stylized, theatrical or sophisticated interiors, then you too just might find this book to be as captivating as I did.
Regency Redux is a must-have for any design library.

A still from the 1932 movie Transatlantic, which won an Oscar for art direction. The look here is referred to as "Deco Greco".

Another still, this time from the 1935 movie No More Ladies (appropriately named as Joan Crawford starred in it!). Eerdmans makes note of the Regency swags and the Neo-Grec furniture in this room.

Can you tell I'm a sucker for old movies??? Here is an image from the 1945 movie Week-end at the Waldorf. Wouldn't you have liked to attend this staged cocktail party??

The Palm Beach resident of Mrs. Hugh Walker Mercer, designed by Ruby Ross Wood. Wood is one of my all-time favorite decorators (and she was a Georgia girl too!).

A room designed by McMillen for Millicent Rogers... a match made in heaven. Note the Neoclassical details in the room.

My wonderful news

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Belle Vivir

Approximately three months ago while doing my Pilates I felt unusually tired and weak. I thought, well maybe I’m gaining some weight. Little did I know something extraordinary inside me was forming? Something I always knew I wanted more than anything in the world. Suddenly I started feeling like another person. My favorite things became less interested, (the computer became my enemy) yes, that’s the reason to my lack of posts lately. Sleeping at any time during the day became a necessity and urgency in my daily life. Now, slightly over the first trimester I feel like myself again. My hubby and I are extremely happy and anxious to have her/him in our arms. I imagine the day I see him/her and my heart gets overwhelmed with so much love and expectancy.

Images above Milkos the cow and Boys/girls Romper. Aren't they adorable?

Meet Lola And A Story

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: k style
Hey Kstylers. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and a fun New Years. Meet Lola, my friend C's grandog. She was the star of the Sorry Tree party this year and definitely won the prize for best dressed. Unfortunaly our xmas went a bit sideways this year and here's why!
After the party we arrived home and realized we had forgotten to give waterboy a key as he was with friends so my husband didn't lock our car door thinking he would have to go out and retrieve said child. As it turned out he was just a few houses away and so walked home. But the problem and I mean BIG problem was that R forgot that he hadn't locked the car door and so we all went to bed thinking we were all locked up safe and sound. Oh and did I mention that I had gone online before bed just to check my email and unwind after party placing my laptop on the floor next to my chair as I always do. And btw my chair sits right by our xmas tree and our first floor living room is adjacent to the master bedroom all on the main level of our house.
So here is where the storey gets dicey. We woke up a bit late the following morning, my husband first and I here him say in an a sort of frantic tone. "Baby, I think we've been robbed." I ask him how he knows this from the bedroom which is only a few feet away. He says fairly calmly "because your laptop is gone and so are most of our xmas presents." At this point I cannot fathom that we are actually having this conversation, but unfortunately we are. And so as we now understand the robbers got into our car, took our garage door opener, quickly opened the door just enough to slide under came into our house while we sleeping a few feet away, took my laptop and the power cord, and all of the xmas presents that looked like they might contain ipods. In fact they got two. Then they slid back out the way they came. We never heard a thing. How scary is that??
Now you might question where we live. But no, we live in an outstanding neighborhood with great neighbors and very nice new homes. We have learned that there have been a rash of such robberies in our area and several of them have also occurred while people were sleeping and the mo has almost consistently been entering via the garage door opener.
So Kstylers the good news is that none of us were hurt. And our insurance will ultimately replace our lost items. But I lost pretty much EVERYTHING on my computer as I had not backed up recently. Devastating from my design and blogging perspective. I had thousands of resource files and well you know how it is. So it will be awhile before I am up to blogging snuff. I do have my new computer but no photoshop yet and I haven't even begun to replace the resource files so important to blogging. So hang in there with me. And please lock your cars at night and your doors during the day. talk soon, k

a bowl with no bottom: perfect or pointless?

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: shelterrific

While I’m lovin’ the name of this “HUG bowl,” I’m not actually sold on the design. According to their website, “DESU DESIGN strives to make innovative products that blur the boundary between art and design.” This bottomless “bowl” simply holds items in place by surrounding them, rather than cupping them. Do you like the way the DESU designers are thinking outside the box …err, bowl? I think for $118, I’d want my bowl to have a bottom. –Erica P.

: : two weddings, four of my very best friends, in one week. so many magical moments, laughter, friendship and love.

louise & erik married on Sept 27th. a beautiful, small, bright colored wedding set in the country by a large estate. louise was adorable in her sweet dress made by her grandmother. and erik more handsome than ever. the ceremony took place in a sun filled greenhouse, the reception followed in one of the old, stone houses surrounding the estate. the party went on well into the morning, the bride and groom left only 1 hr before the guests did. walking out hand in hand through the tall hedges, the sky filled with fireworks and their friends and families waiving from behind. a day to remember! I was thrilled to be able to be there, to be involved with the wedding, help with preparations and spend so much time together with louise, erik and their families. I wish them all the happiness in the world!

A Coat of Red

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
I think the charms of red sports cars and red lampshades have been fully explored, but has enough been said about red bathtubs?

Certainly they aren't for everyone or every bathroom. Once in a while though, in the right spot, red tubs add such flair.

The first non-decorator I knew who experimented with red was a friend from my High days, the talented Ellen. She and her husband bought a house in Atlanta's Grant Park, where many of the homes are at least a century old and sometimes still have original claw-foot bathtubs. In one of their bathrooms, Ellen kept things really simple but injected full-tilt flair by painting the exterior of an ancient tub red.

Unfortunately we can't find any old images of that bathroom but the look was similar to the interiors I've included above. Ellen used her own hands to get the job done and decided to hang a pretty chandelier. Otherwise though, the bathroom was quite understated. Now the couple is involved in their second home and another renovation. Going the adventurous route again, one tub was painted black.

She explains, "I painted the tub at our old house with some tub refinishing paint. It seemed to work very well, but it was not a tub that we used on a daily basis. This time around, someone else did it for us, but he used a spray refinishing product that can be purchased at home improvement stores. It left a nice, smooth finish and covered up all of the rust stains and yucky yellowing of the tub. For the outside, he used spray paint designed for metal surfaces in black."

(BTW: I love the hand towels Ellen embroidered for her guest bath. You can catch her now over at The Long Thread.)
