I thought you'd be interested in checking out Whitney English Paper and Little Pretty Studio's new collection of hoop.de.doo bulletin boards. Aren't these adorable?

Thanks Whitney!

{update: This blogger wrote about her idea on how to make these in her post back in early March, so if you want to DIY a hoop for yourself -- instructions here. Thanks, Jessie!}

60. New Project

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

i tend to stay away from retail projects mainly because there's just too much involved legally and logistically, however when i met with my parents leasing manager this month to renew their lease on their retail store, they made it very clear that the lease wouldn't be renewed unless they moved locations. my parents work in a big mall - they've been there for over 20+ years and this is their 4th time moving locations within the mall. the only difference this time around is that they're actually putting up some money to do some major renovations to the new space as they would like to expand their business and make it appeal more to the younger / modern generation. how could i not help them out.

the move starts the end of May which fits nicely with my schedule being that the finishing deadline for my project right now is mid May. one right into another. i came across designer Harry Allen and was really impressed with his work. great use of architectual details in a suttle yet striking way. no fuss, no mess, just simple and to the point.

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

Well, we've all had showhouses on our minds lately, so I thought it fitting that I mention the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House which will run from November 14-December 7. The showhouse, which benefits the Alliance Children's Theater, will feature the cream of the crop of Atlanta designers, many of whom have been featured in national publications. Designers include Phoebe Howard, Suzanne Kasler, Liz Williams, Gretchen Edwards, Stan Topol, Jared Paul, Mallory Mathison, Carole Weaks, Scott Laslie, and many more. (And if some of you designers are reading this post, congratulations and we can't wait to see you work your magic!)
For more information, click here. November will be here before we know it!

Todd Romano Candles

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

Todd Romano Antiques & Decorations is one of my favorite stores in New York. For me, no trip to the Big Apple is complete until I pop into this stylish mecca of design. Romano has such an amazing eye, so it's no wonder why he is such an in-demand designer. Everything in the shop- deGournay wallpaper, antique porcelain, Christopher Spitzmiller lamps- is perfection!

And now, Romano has added candles to his repertoire. The candles, available through his shop, come in two fragrances:
Thé and Tige de Bambou. Thé (the brown candle) is a fitting name as it does smell a bit like spicy tea- the scent is really unique and totally intoxicating. Tige de Bambou is a bit lighter and is redolent of Spring flowers and freshly cut grass (at least to this nose). The added bonus is the chic yet discreet "TR" monogram on the votive.

So if these crazy gas prices have cut into your design budget and the de Gournay wallcovering and porcelain have been put on the back burner, why not indulge in one of these candles? What a great way to add some Todd Romano flair to your home!

(To order candles dial 212-879-7722. Retail price is $50. And make sure to stop by the store on your next trip to New York.)

today i’m running around like a crazy person trying to meet some print deadlines, finish a few website projects and get everything ready for our trip to savannah this weekend. what i could really use right now is a 20 minute break in one of these chairs with a big cup of tea. sadly, there will be no tea for me this morning. but if you have time to take a break, i highly suggest checking out these gorgeous cameo campaign chairs from anthropologie. they look like a lovely place to take a quick time out.

Pitch your tent...

...on the exotic desert sands of Rajasthan. Soak in the local flavour sitting by the bonfire and listening to the folk songs or wake up to call of peacocks just outside your tents...
The concept of Manvar Desert Camp dates back to the 17th century when Mughal Emperor Jehangir known for his luxurious lifestyle used to set up royal tents with all the amenities during their hunting trips. Manvar Desert Camp has 30 tents arranged in a semi circle around a central 'durbar' hall. The central dining area from where stunning sunrises & sunsets can be seen. The interiors of the tents are extremely luxurious with custom designed block print motifs & large teak wood beds. Huge windows with pull up flaps allow the fresh desert breeze to come in and nets to keep insects out:-)

Live like royalty from the bygone era. Spend some amazing time under the starlit skies of Rajasthan in Manvar Desert Camp.

Birthday

02/26/2008, 22:52 | Original Site: designer's library

Terrarium_2
So it was my birthday yesterday.

I got together with my high school girlfriends (Jeannie, Jeanne, and Robie) and my old college roommate, Gertrude, on Sunday for brunch at Universal Cafe. They gave me this beautiful terrarium--and Jeannie was the mastermind behind the design! Really nice work guys.

At Universal Cafe, Gertrude and I also ran into Cindy, our dorm floor friend...years ago. Which reminds me: when we first moved into our dorm room they so kindly put our names on the door: Gertrude and Margaret (that's my real name). Um, we sounded more like ladies pushing 80 in an assisted living facility than college freshman! Oh yeah, folks were knocking on our door JUST wanting to hang out with us.

Dixieplate
And yesterday, I had dinner with my family. And I was surprised to see these paper plates that Marvin bought from the grocery store. I have to say this is pretty cool for Dixie (or whoever makes this), way better than cheesy florals and grapes. Wouldn't this be a nice pattern on fabric?

Dogplacemat
And this. Well, these snazzy placemats (yes, those are dogs wearing bunny ears) were a gift from my mom. Needless to say, I was speechless.

Frederick Cooper Pendant Lamp Wins Award

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)
Metropolitan Home magazine in their Year's Best Design 100 have selected Alexander and Meagan Julian for creating a winning pendant for Frederick Cooper.
The editors considered all items in the "art of making" which include architecture, interior décor, home furnishings and gadgets.

The pendant is a reductivist take on one of the Julians' favorite textile patterns. The work is hand cut brass with a rich bronze finish. The white linen drum shade provides texture to an otherwise sleek silhouette. View this pendant and other Julian designs at www.frederickcooper.com or download the brochure.

Landfair Furniture + Design Gallery is proud to have Frederick Cooper lamps as a vendor.

Emirates Air: and the case of missing compassion

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: My Marrakesh
Emirates air The blogging girl started off on her journey. In the car she stapled documents, she wrote emails, she made phone calls. But she felt uneasy, somehow. There was a lurking feeling that she had forgotten something, something important.

At the airport, the person behind the Emirates Air counter told her coolly that her flight (EK 0752) was delayed, which would mean that she would miss her ongoing flight and would have to spend six hours in the middle of the night in the Dubai airport. The girl protested but the Emirates Air representative looked past her and called “Next”.

The hours passed at the Casablanca airport. The blogging girl’s Emirates Air meal voucher only entitled her to a drink though her delayed flight didn’t leave until 4 in the afternoon; Emirates Air apparently thought it best to save money at times like this.

Finally on the plane, the girl poured herself a glass of red wine, placing it on the pull down plastic tray before her. It was a few minutes later that the man sitting in front of her jerked his seat forward, spilling the entire bottle of red wine on her lap. She cried out.  The passenger looked back, saw what had happened but said nothing and turned away. The girl mopped herself up as best as she could with wet towels. Wet and cold, she ate her dinner. It was somewhere during the pasta bolognese that the tears began to stream down the girl’s face. The tall, blond air hostess walking down the aisle saw her weeping. Then she looked away and passed her by. And so began the girl’s journey to Bahrain…..

P.S. It turns out that the important thing that the blogging girl had forgotten was her camera battery. Sigh, no pictures of this journey….

P.P.S.  But perhaps you might like to see some of the latest photos of Peacock Pavilions right here at the fabulous blog of Melanie of the amazing Modello Designs

See You Soon!

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic
I'm traveling over the next two weeks, so posting will be a bit spotty. I'll be back posting full-time in early May. See you soon!

come dance with me

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
ok fine folks, i told you it was coming ~ and now it's officially here. studio tango vida, the newest and easily most gorgeous tango studio in san francisco has opened its doors for your dancing pleasure. ney melo and jennifer bratt are the proud owners and they are offering classes every day {except sunday} for beginners thru advanced tangueros and even some special lady's technique classes.
they are also selling comme il faut's for the ladies and a custom-made men's tango shoe from italy that they became rep's for after their last trip to italia. the photo just above is ney showing off his amazon-green alligator shoes {that just so happen to match the wall paint color} from the men's line along with his new rug from argentina {he's *very* proud of both!}.
i took two classes last night & will be taking another two tonight. so now i can give you the official report that the fresh, hip space is a delight to be in! the brand new bamboo floors are fabulous for dancing ~ i don't think my pivots & ochos ever felt better. the accoustics are great ~ it's not a huge studio but just roomy enough, and di sarli sounds perfectly enchanting within. it was a warm night, so they kept the front door open to let in the breeze and many passersby stopped to take a look. i'm sure the sights & sounds were just too much to keep from stopping to take some of it in.
after the last dance everyone agreed it was a blessing to be there. also, ney & jennifer shared champagne left after their opening party on sunday, so that certainly helped with the blissful vibes. but, believe me, you won't need bubbly to come alive on this dance floor.
so if you're in the bay area please make a point to stop in for a class soon {ney & jennifer are here for the month of may but they're off to tour in europe for the month of june}
and if you're not in the bay area, now you have an even greater reason to come visit {hint hint, wink wink, mr.you-know-who}

going home

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
one of my most favorite things to say is "i'm going home" ~ because it's one of my most favorite things to do. this afternoon i'll be flying out for a family-filled fun 4 days . . . . . and i'll be bringing exciting news along with me to share. in a few short hours, thanks to the modern marvel of 3-d ultrasound technology, i'll be able to see my lil' baby-peach again and hopefully, if it isn't too shy, we'll be able to see if it's a boy or a girl. to say that i'm excited is an understatement. ants in the pants doesn't begin to describe it. so much to look forward to wrapped up all in one day!
i wish you all a delightfully delicious memorial day weekend!

sunday swoon

or should the title be "someday soon"? this is a shot of a hotel room, but i can easily imagine it as a real bedroom with one big bed instead of two, and maybe some color added in to give it a more thai-spice feel. sofie, see what i mean: it is a sign! oh yes, we must make your sanctuary asap.

Marrakech: Melanie and the Peacock Pavilions Fairygod Artists

Blog 1 They had come from far away.
They had come from across the sea.
To paint.
To paint Peacock Pavilions.
They leapt up ladders.
They scaled up scaffolding.
They mixed, they measured.
They swirled, they stippled.

From dawn to dusk
And back again.
They filled in the plain.
They colored the white.
Until it was shining
                          and new
                                    and special.

And for this, the Marrakech blogging girl would be forever grateful....

birthday celebrations for my balance & bliss

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
i once read somewhere that a sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost. today my sister turns 31 and i'm beaming with celebratory pride that i am so tightly connected to such an incredible lady. growing up together teaches you a lot of things about each other, some good and some not so good {we're all human of course}, so it's no wonder some siblings don't remain close. but we're lucky ones. our friendship has always been there, and grew even tighter once we both left the nest. we know more about each other than any two other people. and now we're so close that rarely one day goes by without contacting each other.
we're almost two years apart, but when we were little people often asked if we were twins. we have the same nose, and some of the same gestures & manurisms, but she's definitely a unique gem all her own. she's the younger one, but the taller one {by 6 inches}. she's the darker one, and by far the prettier one {drop-dead gorgeous, actually}. she's steadfastly loyal, has a beautiful sentimental side, and a fantastically strong will. she's a perfect gemini goddess. she's very wise and the hardest worker i've ever known. she has a calm confidence and a fantastic sense of humor ~ she's a big flirt, and makes any activity more fun. she stayed closer to home, although she did venture far enough to live with me in seattle for a while after college. she has so many talents and skills and inner gifts i couldn't begin to name them all. i am so grateful for all the balance and bliss she has brought to my life. i admire her for every thing she does and is. and there's nothing i wouldn't do for her. a sister ~ she is your mirror, shining back at you with a world of possibilities. she is your witness, who sees you at your worst and best, and loves you anyway. she is your partner in crime, your midnight companion, someone who knows when you are smiling, even in the dark. she is your teacher, your defense attorney, your personal press agent, even your shrink. some days, she's the reason you wish you were an only child. ~barbara alpert {but that last part i haven't felt since we were pre-teens sharing the same bedroom} :o)
happy birthday, jessica grace, i love you more than words can tell!

Etsy Find of the Day: Handmade Wilderness Project

These resin-and-paper trophy deer heads from Etsy seller Ruby's Lounge take the current craze for taxidermy and deer iconography to a surreal level. I love their colorfulness and humor -- and, of course, the fact that no actual deer was harmed in their creation.

I found this selection of photos on the website of photographer and journalist Gareth Gardner, based in the UK. It's a wonderful dose of modern design that draws your attention to the architectural detail and the stunning materials used (I must point out the multi-coloured timber flooring that is sooooo incredible).

Happy Birthday Avril!

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

Today is my gorgeous, beautiful, happy, organised, best in the whole wide world Design Assistant's Birthday. Happy 20th Birthday Av! If you all remember back a couple of months ago I posted a vintage brass chair which I was about to get recovered. Well of course things got a little hectic around here and the precious little chair got pushed into the back room. Av has always loved this little chair so the girls and I decided to cover it in her favourite fabric and give it to her for her birthday. She was beside herself this morning when we presented the chair to her! I hope you have a wonderful day Av and I hope you treasure your special vintage chair always!! xx Anna

adventures in beekeeping: flowers on the menu

05/01/2008, 15:30 | Original Site: shelterrific

Our bees are late. They were supposed to arrive last Saturday, but at the last minute we got a call saying they wouldn’t be available until this Saturday… something about the weather still being a touch too cold for them. We used our extra weekend to get our garden ready for our a buzzing friends. When we bought the place, the front garden was a bit of an overgrown mess. A wild vine was consuming the fireplace, and the little patch of dirt was an uneven cluster of flowers and weeds. Chad’s been clearing out the clutter, and this Saturday it was finally ready for some planting. We heard that bees really respond to purple flowers, so we put in some May Night Salvia, Emerald Blue Moss Phlox and my favorite, Provence Lavender. This will keep things pretty and tasty for a month or so. But what we need to do next is plant some autumn blooming flowers, so the bees will be kept busy for months and months. Something yellow, perhaps. Any suggestions? — Angela M.

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

while shopping around Home Outfitters this past weekend, i came across these really cute breast cancer ribbon sprinkles and instantly purchased a handful for cupcakes that i'm baking for my girlfriends bridal shower next month. her mother passed away from breast cancer a few years ago and her wedding colors pink & brown were decided upon as a memorial for her mother. i couldn't resist these ...

so i'm thinking of baking vanilla cupcakes with these cute ribbon sprinkles on them for all the guests to take home as part of their gift bag :)

Looking Ahead to Fall Part 2

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic
In addition to the Bilhuber book below, here are some other upcoming releases that rank high on my wish list:

Mlinaric on Decorating. I really don't know a lot about English design impresario David Mlinaric, so I'm looking forward to this release. I'll give you a peek of this book next week.

Michael S. Smith Houses. I think we can all agree that this book will be one of the hottest releases this Fall.

Celerie Kemble: To Your Taste: Creating Modern Rooms with a Traditional Twist. I'm a fan of Kemble's work, so this will be a must-have for me. I haven't heard a lot of buzz about this book, but with a November release date, perhaps it's just a matter of time.

Regency Redux by Emily Eerdmans. I wrote about this book a while back, and believe me, my anticipation grows greater by the day. I think this book will be the breakthrough hit of the season.

Domino: The Book of Decorating. With the Domino name and a $32 price tag, this book will end up on most of our book shelves.

Georgian Style and Design: Living with Proportion and Elegance by Henrietta Spencer-Churchill. Everyone with a design library needs at least one Spencer-Churchill book. Or even two or three!

French Chic: The Art of Decorating Houses by Florence de Dampierre. With photos by Tim Street-Porter, this book is sure to be gorgeous.
