show & tell time ~ cpw apartment

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
i'm so excited to share this with you! a large apartment remodel & redesign project that i was fortunate enough to work on has come to completion, and the project manager has sent over some nice site photos. this is the icing on the cake of a lot of hard work from a lot of talented people. there's really nothing like the satisfaction of seeing a project complete and the clients happily moving in.
this project had a lot of special challenges. . . . . for one, our design office is in san francisco and the project is at central park west in new york. so there was a lot of back-&-forth travel for our team & the clients. another massive challenge is depicted here:
many of the client's art pieces were too large to fit into the building's freight elevator so we had to close off streets, bring in a crane, remove the outer windows of the living room, and lift the art pieces all the way up to the apartment. i'm so glad our project manager was there with camera in hand so we could all share in the marvel of it.
there are more photos on my flickr, but here are a few of my favorites:
{main hallway ~ highlighting the zebra wood floors found throughout the apartment}

{the living room and the grand curving staircase}

{the game table with the piano in the background}

{the den/study with red acrylic backed niches and shelving}

{the kitchen ~ this in particular was my baby of the project. lots of detailing went into it, which can't be seen from a photo, but i suppose that's the mark of good design right? :o) }

{the bar ~ leather paneled walls, resin bar top, patent leather built in sofa and some very chic bar stools}

{the yoga room has cherry wood paneled walls with a dark red/brown stain and a gorgeous antique lotus mandala panel from thailand}

{the design detailing that went into this apartment is staggering ~ these two photos show a nice example: the ceiling coffers in the dining room echo the skylight pattern in the stairwell}

{a lovely view from the deck on a gorgeous new york afternoon}

Books to Give

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Many months ago when I learned about Santa Barbara Living, I knew come November I would add it to my library since three Michael Smith-designed homes are included in the book. But now that I have one of the gorgeous editions in my hands, I'm finding myself equally drawn to the wonderful lifestyle shots. There's an unexpectedly joyful quality to this tome.

Mixed alongside lush photography of grand turn-of-the-last-century estates are pictures of kids playing in the sun: the American dream at its most ideal.

As you would expect, many of the houses are some incarnation of Spanish-inspired or Mediterranean-style. But look for surprises too, like Jules Allen's sleek modernist house perched above Butterfly Beach, or Bobby Webb's Caribbean Colonial.

Equestrians feature prominently in this book too. It would make a lovely volume to pour over on Christmas day, especially for the garden or architecture enthusiast. I'm trying not to spoil the surprise by sharing too many interiors, but here below is a small taste of the signature Smith style captured in Santa Barbara Living.

Of course, the ultimate gift for your favorite equestrienne cousin or college friend is the book I mentioned last May: Horse by Kelly Klein. All proceeds from the sales will benefit Equestrian Aid Foundation.

Klein, a passionate horsewoman, wanted to go beyond pretty romantic images -- although some fall in that category -- and convey the strength of her favorite noble creatures. With artistic close-up views of muscles and veins, she shows the athletic, hard-working nature of horses as well as their innate kindness. What struck me as I flipped through the pages is the diverse range of scenes Klein includes, from the most humble to the very affluent.

Doris Leslie Blau and Our Favorite Designers

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

I'm currently on the hunt for rugs for both my living room and dining room, and the timing couldn't be better. Why? Because Doris Leslie Blau has just introduced the new 2009 Designer Carpet Collection, and most of our favorite designers are featured. Albert Hadley, Miles Redd, Todd Romano, Markham Roberts, and 42 other designers have created modern carpet designs for this venerable company. (That's Mr. Hadley's design at top.)

I really like the range of designs. Roger Jones' carpet is very cool and elegant. Now that one would look great in my dining room, but I could also see it in a icy blue bedroom too. And the other designs? Can't you see them in living room with a Ventry Ltd. sofa, upholstered in a neutral of course, and a chrome or lucite cocktail table? I'm thinking something very Billy Baldwin. What do you think?

(The designer collection carpets are made from various materials including silk, wool, and banana-leaf fiber and come in different weaves. For more information, visit the Doris Leslie Blau website.)

...on the exotic desert sands of Rajasthan. Soak in the local flavour sitting by the bonfire and listening to the folk songs or wake up to call of peacocks just outside your tents...
The concept of Manvar Desert Camp dates back to the 17th century when Mughal Emperor Jehangir known for his luxurious lifestyle used to set up royal tents with all the amenities during their hunting trips. Manvar Desert Camp has 30 tents arranged in a semi circle around a central 'durbar' hall. The central dining area from where stunning sunrises & sunsets can be seen.The interiors of the tents are extremely luxurious with custom designed block print motifs & large teak wood beds. Huge windows with pull up flaps allow the fresh desert breeze to come in and nets to keep insects out:-)

Live like royalty from the bygone era. Spend some amazing time under the starlit skies of Rajasthan in Manvar Desert Camp.

: : hurray!! finally I have some photos to share with you all! we had a little house warming party this weekend and had to get the place in order, so I took the opportunity to snap some quick photos. we're lovin' our apartment!! and we were so happy to share it with our friends this weekend. above are photos of the .dining room. and .living room. the dining room wall is a pretty turquoise, our four yellow eames chairs complement it nicely. the table is what I used as my desk at my old apartment. we're on the hunt for a dinner table that could host at least 8 people for dinner. but this will have to do for now. it's just big enough to fit the silicone table cloth that my sister and brother gave me [by wisdesign]

in the living room the wall is painted in japanese fern, the eames lounge is a reproduction, and sooo comfortable. the fabric on the ottoman was a present from my best friend .louise. who works for a textile company in Sweden.
the kitchen is long and narrow, so we have extended it out into the diningroom and bought one large kitchen island and two small ones to make up for the lack of storage. and now it's the social spot of the house. everyone comes to hang by the kitchen island while drinks are served and food is being cooked. my swedish cookie box I found on swedish ebay .tradera.
the tea box is from an adorable little market in Quebec and the orange pyrex bowl we bought at a fleamarket in Virginia.
the bedroom is heavenly in the afternoons when the sun fills the whole room. the front balcony is right off the bedroom. up until this point, the balcony has been the most frequently used 'room' of the house. at night the balcony looks so cozy with lights wrapping around the railing. we also just started a small herb garden out there. funny how incredibly satisfying gardening can be? who would have thought?

This is sooo ingenious and sooo what I need... placemats that are a perfect fit for a round table! No more overlapping standard mats, or having corners hang over the edge. These clever Wedge Placements fit a circular outdoor table perfectly and are completely weatherproof... from Solutions

Favorite Things (Part II)

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Bluelines

Volume Two of  "Lines & Shapes," a series of small books I co-curate with Maria Vettese, came out last week.

This book's theme is "block," and it's dedicated to projects created by our contributing artists. I find the projects so creative and absorbing, and hope that others will too.

But I'm especially fond of a section in the back of this book, where we show some of the artist's "favorite things." I thought I’d share images of these pages, which include favorite corners of the artist's homes and studios, and single objects which make them happy.

I'm so excited to share today's post with you. For so long I have had this website bookmarked waiting for construction to finish. At last it's time to be inspired by the work of Sydney designers Juliette Arent and Sarah-Jane Pyke of Arent & Pyke. Influenced by mid-century modern and the international style their work is about passion and balance, details and texture. It's all about optimism! To truly appreciate these rooms you must must must go to the website, click on view larger and experience them full screen. I'm moving in!

Planning Ahead, Week II

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court

One of my favorite parts of Julia Reed's book, Ham Biscuits, Hostess Gowns, and Other Southern Specialties: An Entertaining Life, is the description of her grandparents pulling up the driveway in December in a gray Cadillac overflowing with chess pies and silver-and-gold-wrapped presents. (Not to mention kitchen counters laden with tins of cayenne pepper-laced cheese straws.) Substitute a Buick for the Cadillac, add several dozen bourbon balls, and the memory is almost an exact match for my own.

If you are thinking about giving homemade food this year, there are some great recipes and festive ideas in Julia's book. Stylish presentation options abound too: The Container Store sells crisp white food-safe tins that would look good with a red grosgrain ribbon, or stripes or traditional plaid. If you prefer gold or silver tins, try Specialty Bottle. The selection here is vast.

Professional food grade, grease proof waxed tissue is available in an array of colors at Fancy Flours online retail shop.

I'll probably be addressing my cards and packages with a simple pen, but if you are inclined to use convenient printed mailing labels, iomoi has such pretty choices. To celebrate The First Emperor, I selected a chinoiserie label, above second from the top. The gift tags are from Kate Spade and the ribbon can be found at M & J.

Here are two different approaches to making bourbon balls: a recipe adapted by Louisvillian Jennifer Ahearn. And a version made for the Tennessee premiere party for Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown. I will add that my grandmother used far more bourbon than the caterers did.

Click here for an interactive map of legendary Southern foods with companion story written by John T. Edge or go directly to McEntyre's for the cheese straws.

While we're on the subject of gift wrap, look at the sumptuous mix of colors and patterns used by Jayson Home. As you can read, free shipping is offered through December.

Jayson's blue paper dove ornaments are hard to resist.

Hannah's Room

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

If you have been reading Katiedid for awhile, you know I have been working on my younger daughter's bedroom, theoretically for her birthday. Well, her birthday has come and gone, and we are still not quite done. I can manage to get client's work done and meet a deadline at work, but at home.....the cobbler's shoe syndrome takes over. We have drapery panels to hang, a mirror to find, and art to hang. But the furniture is all in and the room is painted! Progress!

In the meantime, my older daughter had a party for Halloween. Which prompted a room cleaning. I thought I would take the very infrequent opportunity of a clean room to snap some photos. Just so I can remember what it looks like.

Hannah and I did her room a few years ago starting with the Marimekko "Unikko" Duvet Cover and shams as the jump off point. We chose a matlisse bedspread from Crate and Barrel with matching Euro shams for the "background". You probably recognize the Seagrass headboard from Pottery Barn. The nightstand is an antique Swedish pine table. Nate Berkus lamps from Linens and Things. Red drapery panels from IKEA. We chose things that a teenage girl could grow with that were affordable, and therefore changeable if tastes changed.

Above her antique pine dresser, I placed a flea market mirror that I painted red which made it pop off the walls, which are painted Dunn Edwards Whisper White.

The room is divided by French doors into two parts, the main bedroom (very small) and a sun room. It is a very charming space and one of the selling points when we were first looking to buy the house. As soon as Hannah saw this space she claimed first dibs.

The sun room is covered with bead board on the walls and ceiling and has windows on three walls. We made it into a cozy library using West Elm book shelves, which fit perfectly under the windows. There is an old pine armoire for storage....and Heaven knows a teenage girl has got to have storage. We used West Elm red lacquer nesting tables, a white slip covered chair from IKEA and a lambskin rug on the floor.

And that's it! A fun bright space for my teenage girl.

Speaking of Nate Berkus.......now that Linens and Things is closing, I was wondering where he might be selling his retail products. It turns out he is offering his line on the HSN website. He is also writing a blog for the website as well, which you can check out here. I went and did a little looking around and found THE mirror for my other daughter's bedroom! The Nate Berkus Moroccan Mirror:

Perfect size and price! I am determined to get this room done before.......Christmas!

I absolutely adore the window treatment, the soft puddling on the ground luminated by a glow from above from the coved inset along the window frame. Sheer elegance!

This kitchen is not only my favorite color - white, but it also has great banquette seating tucked away off to the side.
