Swedish weddings

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: red.house
: : two of my best Swedish girlfriends are getting married, a week apart from each other, at the end of this month. I am so thrilled and happy that I will be able to be home for their weddings! In fact, .louise. did try to make it easy for me and planned her wedding close to .tina's. I've been helping them both with design inspiration here and there, and for .louise & erik. I made their invitations. they'll be getting married outside in a beautiful garden. .tina & hans. will be getting married on cliffs by the ocean, on an island in the Swedish westcoast archipelago.

retro faucet, modern function: the dishmaster

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: shelterrific

If you like a retro kitchen look but also want real utility in your fixtures, Pam of Retro Renovation has the perfect holiday gift for you. She just launched a new site, Dishmaster Living, where she’s selling the Dishmaster, a kitchen faucet that looks almost the same as when it debuted in the late 1940s, but is still being built brand-new. Says Pam, “The Dishmaster makes washing the dishes fun via the ‘Push Button Dishwashing’ action of the special aerator brush wand, which dispenses soapy sudsy water and rinses clean, too.” And it turns out there’s more to that than just retro charm — the Dishmaster also conserves water, energy and detergent when hand-washing dishes. Purchase three different styles of the Dishmaster at Dishmaster Living. –Mary T.

Fall Dinner Party

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid

Last Sunday, we had some friends over for dinner to celebrate the Fall Season. It gave me the push I needed to add a little Fall decor to my house. I rearranged the front table in my Living Room adding a piece of art done by my sister-in-law for a wedding gift, some pumpkins from the Farmer's Market, and a beautiful arrangement of corn stalks, seed pods and wild grasses put together by a wonderful vendor also from the Farmer's Market. I wish I could take credit, but when you have it right in front of you, why pass it up?! (Plus, for only $4, what a steal!!!!).

I put the Fall foliage in an ironstone master jar, and added two ironstone footed bowls, the small from H&Co, the large from Thomas Hughes. I think I will fill them with walnuts.

At the Dining table, I started with a table cloth I made from inexpensive natural burlap. I find that if I use this as a base, I can put all different sizes of smaller cloths on top. The white one here is a vintage cotton cloth with fringe on each end. I used a pair of antique mercury glass candlestick holders in which I put some brown fun faux bois candles I found at Target. More pumpkins from the Farmer's Market and leaves from the yard make a very easy center piece. I added a few votive candles among the leaves.

I used simple large white plates, and my silver, hand blown glass water glasses from Anthropology, simple wine glasses that are always available at Cost Plus or Ikea, and Hotel Napkins from William Sonoma. Easy and very quick to put together!

We had a Fall menu starting with goat cheese filled dates with toasted bread crumbs as the appetizer, and then a French Onion Soup, which was pretty easy and delicious! We made grilled Cornish game hens with a Dijon Mustard and Riesling marinade on a bed of sauteed carrots, turnips and cabbage and an Apple Potato Gallete. There was Schwelmer Hefe Weizen Beer and a Dry German Reisling to choose from. Good food and good company!

(All of the recipes for this dinner can be found in the William Sonoma Entertaining Cook Book)

Ideas: Thanksgiving or December Celebrations

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
For those of us who are visually oriented, the hand-dipped red wax seal on bottles of Maker's Mark is hard to resist. It was designed in 1958 by Margie Samuels, wife of distillery founder Bill Samuels Sr. A friend of mine gave me this tiny bottle along with her recipe for bourbon pecan pie. (BTW: I read in the December In Style that John Hamm likes Maker's Mark.)

A homemade pie in a reusable pan presented along with a recipe and your preferred brand of bourbon is such a nice thing to take to a Thanksgiving celebration. Or to give later anytime in December.

The filling my friend does is actually Edna Lewis'. In 1992, The New York Times published Miss Lewis' version, so I think as long as I include a link to The Gift of Southern Cooking, I can safely list the ingredients here:

3 eggs, beaten
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
1/3 cup melted unsalted butter
2 tablespoon bourbon
1/2 teaspoons salt
1 cup chopped pecans

My friend preheats her oven to 375 degrees, and whisks together the eggs, syrup, sugar, melted butter, bourbon and salt. Next she places the pecans in the bottom of a 9" pie plate, over her crust, then pours the filling over the pecans. She bakes until it sets, about 35-40 minutes.

A Maker's Mark bottle given with a silver julep cup would be a handsome Christmas gift. As always, BD Jeffries offers silver plate options priced from $20-$35. Antique and vintage sterling cups are available through Shelton Gallery. Charles Willis has a good selection of pewter cups in the $40-$45 range (at least at the brick-and-mortar shop).

Julep cup image is by Charles Walton IV, courtesy Southern Accents

Pie pan is available through
Williams Sonoma

BTW: My Kentucky friend buys her julep cups at the Shelbyville store, Wakefield Scearce.

i'm a little slow on the announcement band wagon for spreading the word on a story of tragedy and incredible human compassion for one of our fellow blogging friends. this is a story that has stuck with me all week ~ i can't stop thinking about it actually, so i am sorry for being late on bringing this up on studio wellspring ~ but it's not too late for it to be useful.
a lovely woman and delightful blogger, stephanie nielson and her husband christian were in a very serious plane crash last week. they are a young couple with four children under the age of six. they are in critical condition with a very long & very expensive recovery ahead of them. stephanie has third degree burns covering 80% of her body and christian has third degree burns over 30% of his body. the outreach to help them has been so inspirational, and you can be a part of it too! online auctions are all over the blogiverse to help them with the expenses and there's a fund you can contribute to directly as well.
as of yesterday, 300 websites & blogs are auctioning off some super wonderful items for the family's benefit, in all price ranges. go here to see the comprehensive list: http://www.designmom.com/ . i've included photos from some of the items to tantilize you into jumping over & bidding.
if you are able, please consider contributing to this fund that will go directly to the family. http://www.nierecovery.com/

Mark Your Calendar: Bella Bigsby at August

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: More Ways to Waste Tim
It's interesting how traditional galleries are no longer the sole provenance of art shows -- more and more boutiques, it seems, are also turning their wall space over to notable local and even national artists.

San Francisco, of course, has several great home shops that double as stellar art spaces, including Rare Device, the Curiosity Shoppe, Park Life, BellJar, and others. Here in the East Bay, Relish at Home, Mignonne, FiveTen Studio, Vessel, and the Gardener also host regular art shows.

As far as I know, though, it's still pretty unusual for clothing boutiques to moonlight as art galleries. But that hasn't stopped August, a chic fashion retailer on Oakland's College Avenue, from featuring some really great local art. And although my skinny-jean-sporting days are long past, I often pop into August just to admire the store's lovely artwork and stunning decor.

This month, August hosts new work from British ex-pat Bella Bigsby (previously blogged here), whose melancholy landscapes and nature studies will take your breath away. There's an artist reception from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight, November 12, and the show will be up at August through the end of the month.

Check out more of Bigsby's art right here.

Spent a tiny bit of time browsing my favorite category on Ebay and look what I found. I love the contemporary take on this lampworked heart and you can go here to bid on it right now. Hey guys, what a perfect valentine's day present for your sweetie.
On another note my posts maybe a bit sporadic next week as I have a lot going on including the fact that it is finals time again for '"waterboy" and that always means of flurry of last minute cramming and usually a few papers which need to be "edited' and "fine-tuned". talk soon, k

Tomaz Erzetic of Slovenia

Tomaz Erzetic of Slovenia has just sent me pictures of the most unusual piece of furniture I've ever seen.

Erzetic is a young designer and has this description of his work:
Based on an elaborate concept and a carefully planned study this unique artistic creation is a perfect combination of functionality, and the art of painting, sculpturing and design.

New, revolutionary design of unique pieces of furniture does not only pervade the space, filling it up with a soul of its own, but also creates a charismatic essence of the object of art itself. This piece is the fruit of work of two promising young artists; Klemen Benedik, painter and designer, and Toma? Erzeti?, sculptor and designer.

Elaborately planed furniture design and a tender, refined painting are the artistic soul and an added value of this unique piece of furniture, which moves one's heart by its very existence, suggesting and narrating its story.
Erzetic writes the piece is 3.8m in length, 2.15m in height, 1m max in depth.

Two (Terribly Missed) Fat Ladies

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Bluelines

I recieved an email the other day bearing some of the best news I've heard in weeks.

One of my favorite culinary TV series, "Two Fat Ladies," is finally coming to DVD!

Newtwofat_ladies

For anyone who doesn't remember this fantastic British show (which aired back when Giada's decollete was just a glimmer in some TV executive's eye), there's still reason to check it out.

Don't expect healthy twists or 30-minute meals here. Instead, prepare to ride off with Jennifer Paterson and Clarissa Dickson Wright (by motorcycle and sidecar, naturalement) around Britain (and beyond) to prepare seriously hearty meals.

How about joining a hunting party in Scotland for a menu that includes roast grouse and venison with blackberries (episode 5)? Or perhaps you'd enjoy making lobster for a sisterhood of Benedictine nuns in Ireland (episode 14). Soused herrings, Welsh rarebit souffle, onion soup with Stilton, fruit tartlets...the list goes on.

These aren't all recipes that you'd likely rush out and make, but that's not really the point. The settings are verdant and the ladies are undeniably charming, entertaining, and passionate about food.

Even though the show itself is dated, it's novel and refreshing to see them, polar opposites of the squeaky-clean, book-deal-sniffing personae of today's food TV stars, preparing honest food without pretension.

Welsh Rarebit Souffle
Ingredients:
2 large slices of good-quality white bread
1/2 pound of high-quality, aged cheddar cheese
    3 egg yolks
    4 egg whites
1 level teaspoon dry English mustard
1 vigorous shake of Worcestershire sauce
1 vigorous shake of Tabasco sauce
    Salt and Pepper

Grate the cheese and place in a bowl. Beat in the egg yolks, a level teaspoon of mustard, a good shake each of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco sauce, and salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Toast the bread; whip the egg whites until they stand in stiff peaks. Add a spoonful or so of the beaten egg whites into tothe cheese mixture then gently fold the rest of the egg whites into the bowl. Put the toasts into an ovenproof dish and pour the mixture over them. Bake in a preheated oven at 450 degrees for 10 minutes until browned and risen. Serve at once with a salad or spinach on the side.

Recipe reprinted from the Two Fat Ladies DVD box set, Acorn Media, 2008.

Ribbon Obsession

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court

In her morning report from Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Christmas House, Brilliant Asylum mentioned Nicholas Kniel Fine Ribbons and Embellishments. Although I'm a serious ribbon junkie, I have to confess that this shop has been off my radar. Located in Sandy Springs, it's just outside my usual stomping ground in the city. But I'm thrilled to know about another good local source.

Kniel offers hand-dyed silk ribbons similar to the peacock-blue sample shown above, as well as grosgrain, velvet, taffeta, organdy, satin, novelty styles, vintage pieces, feathers, and all sorts of trims and millinery flowers.

For gift wrapping techniques and inspiration, be sure to check the AH & L blog; more information about seminars held in conjunction with Christmas House should be added soon.

Many thanks to Millie, a.k.a. Brilliant Asylum, for giving us a thoughtful sneak peek at the showhouse. Remember, proceeds benefit the Alliance Children's Theatre and the event has been an annual tradition for 34 years. (It's just day one but I'm already receiving positive emails about Mallory Mathison's laundry room/home office!)

The ribbon and trim in image one came from my own collection but represent the types of things you might find at Kniel's.

Now if you are looking for simple Old School flair, like tartan tins for baked goods (or solid red or white) and other holiday trimmings, be sure to visit Richard's Variety store at 2347 Peachtree Road (404) 237 1412.

Just around the corner, Smith & Hawken is well stocked with paper white bulbs for forcing. This is a good weekend to get started if you want to see blooms before Christmas.

As a sidenote, I have to say that everyone who receives one of my homemade, hand-lined envelopes this season (not shown yet on this blog) is going to think I copied these exquisite versions from Cartier, shown in the December Elle Decor. So much for trying to be original.

Genoa: Say it's Not So

11/04/2008, 21:06 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)

Genoa is closing after 38 years. Billed as the premier restaurant in Portland, known widely for its regional Italian cooking and meticulous service, it just became available on Passport, but now is closing on November 22nd.

(Owner Kerry) DeBuse says he spent tens of thousands of dollars upgrading the old-fashioned dining room in June. Business had been slow since early summer, he says, "but it all changed 180 degrees within a week of the recent (Wall Street) crash."When the problems went global, the bottom fell out.

I've dined there possibly twice or more and have never been disappointed. Due to the upper end pricing, you didn't go all the time, but it was the place for a special occasion.
