Art to the Rescue

Posted by JodiI was recently preparing my house for a friend’s baby shower when I noticed the non-curtained French doors in the den provided a great view for guests to my not-so-neat bedroom.
It’s the kind of thing you don’t think of until the door bell is about to ring.
My quick fix: I took a few of my son Sammy’s paintings from our massive collection and taped them neatly with white artist’s tape to the back of the doors.
It was meant to be a temporary solution, but my husband and I love it. (We know we are biased.) I might even laminate the art so I can hang the masterpieces neatly with some tiny eyelets on cup hooks.
Since there is a lot of Sammy art where that came from, we often have “art shows” at our house. (His teacher told me that he “uses up more paper than anyone in the class.”) I was proud, even though I’m not sure it was meant as a compliment.
Our shows are installed in hallways, on doors, and strung on clotheslines under the mantle. One “piece” that is on permanent display over our mantle is a series of his first people drawings collaged and hung in one of Ikea’s “NYTTJA” frames.
They come in lots of colors and sizes. The one above is the large (19 ¾” x 27 ½”) orange one and it’s only $7.99! (One downside with the frame is the plexiglass starts to bow and sag after a while. I plan to replace it with glass.)
Collaging a bunch of your child’s artwork is a great way to capture a series and create a larger piece of art.
Now that my younger son, Lionel, is starting to draw himself, we may have to move to a place with more walls!

Love the blue and orange combo-isn't it cheerful? And really plays up the warm honey tones in the breads.
These were the only pics I was able to snap at my local Panera Bread, as evidently, picture- taking in the store is not permitted. I was quickly asked to put my camera away. Probably didn't help that I was toting this enormous camera with large lenses... Not the most subtle of approaches- I don't think I'd make a very good spy!new: good shape design (+ fun link)

i'm so excited to share this with you! a large apartment remodel & redesign project that i was fortunate enough to work on has come to completion, and the project manager has sent over some nice site photos. this is the icing on the cake of a lot of hard work from a lot of talented people. there's really nothing like the satisfaction of seeing a project complete and the clients happily moving in.

Can you imagine sitting through a meeting in that conference room? It seems like it would be very agitating. And then the hallway...the complete opposite extreme! Grey upon beige upon taupe?I concur, this space would not be one I would want to spend any period of time trying to concentrate in. Yikes! It would be fun to see what other horrible color mishaps people can find. Let's start a collection of what not to do with color- send in your best examples and we can vote on the worst!

You've already seen books arranged by color. The concept isn't new. Some people love the look; others find it contrived. But something about Kelly Klein's arrangement here really appeals to me. Although it has graphic appeal, there's a certain softness to it. (If that is not too much of a contradiction.) Clearly these are books she collected herself, not editions chosen by a decorator.
Rearranging books costs nothing except a little time and energy. So Kelly's armoire is my inspirational pick for the day.
First Ingredient: Personal Warmth

It will probably be a week or so before my Cecil Beaton book arrives. In the meantime, I thought I'd share some more enduring advice from Vogue's Book of Etiquette, 1969. The tips are universal and relate mainly to the concept of home, rather than to decorating. And they apply whether you have endless resources or a tiny budget, so I think the guidance is timely.
Vogue says houses that are well-mannered and harmonious tend to put people at ease and evoke attractive behavior. Four essential ingredients contribute to this type of home: personal warmth, sincerity, understatement, and consideration. "None of these has to do with formality or lack of it. And none is a matter or money."
According to the book, "Personal warmth is the most appealing element in any room and nothing -- elegance, drama, enormous expenditure -- can take its place...it is the sum total of many things, all of which indicate that people really live in a room, and do not merely pass through it."
Vogue stresses the presence of truly meaningful objects over a contrived arrangement. The wildly different homes of Aerin Lauder and artist Konstantin Kakanias contain layers of meaning, and both exude warmth. Kakanias' bohemian digs are in the hills of Hollywood, carved out of part of actress Barbara Stanwyck's former playground. Lauder's inherited weekend home, in contrast, is stately. But each house is filled with mementos, not trendy accessories.
Signs of the artist's fascinating globe-trotting life are clear throughout his home, and Lauder keeps her grandmother's spirit completely alive rather than worry about being hip.
"Warmth is an inviting, disarming quality that must originate in a person's or family's sentiments and way of life." Examples include:A collection of mediocre drawings by a long-dead relative grouped without apology over a pedigreed antique.
A worn Oriental rug that children and dogs cannot really harm.
Paperbacks on the shelves alongside the better-bound books.
Lamps in the best spot for reading as well as for decoration.
A pile-up of magazines rather than a careful arrangement of this month's issues.
A lovingly arranged vase of inexpensive flowers.
"Warmth can begin with sunny colors or big hospitable sofas and chairs, but in themselves these are not enough. A warm room suggests in all its parts that comfort, affection -- even personal whim -- are more important than effect." It makes people feel contented, "just as they do in the presence of a warm individual, and they tend to be their best selves because of it. "

She had just finished working on the Marrakech chapter and the Adventures chapter of the new Fodor's Guide to Morocco. But there was more. You see she did a bi-monthly city guide to Marrakech for a Spanish magazine. And she wrote Moroccan feature stories and some not-so-feature-stories-but-nice-anyway stories. And the editors put up with her quirky writing style. And then they sent her the magazines with her articles, all fresh and new, and smelling like clean in big manila envelopes in the mail.
Her kids thought it was pretty cool:-)

Lauren Marsden is a talented Victoria artist who creates some of the most amazing artistic creations I have ever seen. Her indoor/outdoor carpeting gallery space of Home Sweet Home (above) exhibit blew me away. Her latest artistic endeavour is called Territorial Knittings... she is knitting street sign covers for every street she has lived on in Victoria. The pattern is an exact duplicate of the sign itself... very clever, very creative!

These paper mobiles are such a pretty way to bring color and dimension to a dead corner or to add movement in front of a window, where they'll flutter gently in the breeze.
The delicate mobiles from Portland's Frazier & Wing are made to order by owner Heather Frazier, who cuts each shape by hand from artist's paper or recycled magazine pages before stringing them with clear monofilament from a Plexiglas disc.
The colored mobiles come in three sizes: 5.5 by 28 inches ($85), 7 by 38 inches ($150), and 7 by 72 inches ($200).
