Pamela Love has got to be my 'favorite jewelry designer'. She's as EDGY as her jewelry designs, being a painter, drummer and designer...oh & did I mention shes totally beautiful? Her 'eagle cuff' design has been featured in many editorials as well as her bird's skull. Of course, these aren't made of real claws & skulls, thankfully.....that is what makes them even better! Pamela said in an interview for New York Magazine that her hair is so hard to manage. She is wanting a hat from the Sonia Rykiel collection & she mentions it in all her interviews in hopes they'll send her one! Smart gal. Hmmm, I'd LOVE an eagle cuff from Pamela Love.... hint hint.

oh, to live in a barn

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
if you've been a studio wellspring reader for a while you'll know i have this thing for barns turned in to homes. whenever i see one i get weak in the knees. it's a long time dream of mine {we're talking i've been drawing up floor plans on graph paper since 6th grade} to use modern interior design in a vintage barn. so it's always incredibly inspiring to see what others have done with similar dreams ~ to see how ingenius their concept is, or to imagine how i'd do things differently. lately i've stumbled across several great resources for aquiring & moving barns, renovating barns & decorating in barn-house style.
first off, the barn pages ~ it lists more than 200 barns for sale, which are priced according to condition. most of the barns need to be moved from the land they're on ~ which is just fine, since often barns are located in an out-of-the-way place without easy access to utilities & such. so you can buy a barn and have it disassembled and shipped to a more desired location, where it can be put back together again. or you can just use the barn timber to build something new. it's a fantastic recycling concept, isn't it?
for help with the restoration and reassembly of barns, check out the barn people in vermont, berkshire barns in massachusetts, and the new jersey barn company. they've all been dismantling, restoring and reassembling vintage barns for over twenty-five years. even if your favorite barn isn't in the north east, they would still be great resources for any project location.
for lots of lovely barn related decor items & furnishings, the barn house blog is a lovely place to visit.
and to take part in a blogger's project of turning a barn into a modern home, check out bare hill barn ~ it's fascinating.
lastly, some eye candy from the barn pages:

Starting To Think About Christmas

11/12/2008, 12:02 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things

Usually around mid November I start to think about my Christmas theme for the year. When I say theme, for me, it's usually mostly about what wrapping paper and gift cards I am going to use and which ribbons I will use to re-thread all of my mismatched Christmas ornaments which I have been collecting since my husband and I got married.

This time each year I love pulling out my collection of Christmas decorations as they always bring back so many happy memories especially the little ornament one of my girlfriends gave me when Harry was born. I also have ornaments I have found overseas in special places like Venice, Paris, Hawaii, San Francisco etc. etc. I'm always on the lookout for special Christmas decorations!!

Bird Ornaments available from Black & Spiro

Bunny Ornament available from Black & Spiro

To keep my collection growing I like to buy 2-3 new decorations a year. We are selling these two gorgeous decorations {above} at Black & Spiro this year and I have decided to add some of these to my collection at home. One day I will pass on my collection to Harry and hopefully he will get as much joy out of it as I do and maybe he too will carry on the tradition with his children by adding a few new ornaments each year.

Our 2006 Christmas Tree

Another thing I changed about my Christmas theme last year was the tree. Whilst I have always gone for a white tree {above}, last year, as it was time for me to replace my tree, I went for a traditional green tree. This year however, I have decided to go back to a white tree as I just feel that a white tree looks much prettier with my colourful decorations and because the green tree I purchased last year has somehow been damaged in our store room....I'm thinking a little 5 year old I know may be to blame!!

Just this week I came across these pretty, colourful Christmas napkins from Cath Kidston. When I spotted them I knew straight away that they would be my inspiration for my Christmas theme this year. In particular I love that they look vintage and the pretty colours really caught my eye.

I then went about trying to find some pretty ribbon, cards, paper etc. After having a little hunt around I started to think that maybe I could try to be a little more creative this year and instead of spending lots of money on expensive wrapping papers I decided that Harry and I will make our own Christmas wrapping paper. I will purchase a large roll of butchers paper and then get out the paint brushes and maybe even make some vegetable printing blocks!

I love these pretty yellow and white polka dot cards which we sell at Black & Spiro. I think they work so beautifully with my theme so these are a definite.

I have a roll of this grosgrain ribbon at the shop too so I think I will use it up with some of the other ribbons I already have in my present drawer at home. I also love to make ribbons out of some of my fabric remnants at the shop...I just tear them up into strips and tie them onto my gifts...a great way of using up small pieces of fabric.

Vintage Tea Tin from Etsy Seller Sohn

This Christmas I am challenging myself to try to be a little less extravagant and a little more creative. Therefore another way to meet this challenge is to do some baking. I thought I might look for some vintage tins and then use them to package up some home made biscuits to give to my family & friends.

What are your plans this Christmas??

House in Progress: Living Room 3.0

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: More Ways to Waste Tim
Of all the rooms in our home, the living room is the one that seems to forever be morphing. (You can see earlier incarnations here and here.) In fact, the only thing that doesn't change much is the furniture placement. We've tried moving the big pieces around, but this seems to be the only arrangement that doesn't look wonky in the space. Still, the colors, smaller pieces, and accessories in this room are constantly shifting.

It's still not quite there (I'm desperate to repaint, for one), but I thought I'd show you the latest incarnation:

Yeah, I know it looks a bit cluttered in this shot. It doesn't feel that way in real life, but now I see that I should probably continue to edit a bit. (Ah, the accumulation of "stuff." It's a sickness.)

Anyway, other than the seating and the bookshelves (which came from Crate & Barrel and a local "unfinished furniture" store, respectively), we got just about everything in this room from the Alameda flea market or eBay.

The bullet planter is from Hip Haven; the SubPop/Jeff Kleinsmith poster can be found here; the lamp was $10 at the flea market (my best find there this year); the little planter trio is from IKEA; and the vintage teak entry chest is an eBay score.

Except for the mirror and the books, everything in this picture was found on eBay; the metal "sculpture" is actually a vintage industrial cake beater. The latest evidence of my incurable lamp addiction always seems to end up on this cabinet.

The credenza, Buddha head lamp, metal H, vintage letterpress letters, and ceramic bird figurines are yet more eBay finds; the black-and-white photo was a flea market score; the tiny print is one of Chris Crites' paper bag mugshots; and the ceramic pear is from Heather Knight's Etsy shop.

The ceramic garden stool and vintage coffee table? Also eBay. I want to replace the table's small marble top with a larger one, but haven't quite gotten around to it. The pillow is from Henry Road (purchased on the cheap at the last Modern Economy sale). The "amazing shedding shag" rug is the Quinn from Pottery Barn, but we got it for about half-price on eBay. It's a good thing, too, because if I'd paid full retail for this thing -- which I kind of love but which is the absolute bane of my existence -- I'd be upset.

The stone planter head was from Wisteria; the vintage teal bowl is from eBay; the tall "Try Everything" print is from Advice to Sink in Slowly; and the blue bird triptych is by Hadley Hutton.

I'm just going to say it: I kind of hate the couch, chairs, and ottoman. Once I figure out what to replace them with -- and if we ever save enough pennies to actually buy those replacements -- they're going straight up on craigslist. Nick and I are both pretty tall (6'2" and 5'10"), so the couch is more comfortable for us without the back cushions.

The throw draped over the back (a birthday present from my mom) is from Designers Guild, and the linen pillows are from Anna Joyce (a splurge from Portland's Olio United), Sharon Spain, and Paper Cloud (both bought on super-duper clearance at Oakland's Atomic Garden); the floor lamp is from IKEA.

I used the Orla Kiely wallpaper left over from my dining room hutch project to back the bookshelves, but came up one length short. (Anyone have 52 inches of this paper to spare?) A vintage wooden soda crate turned on its side displays bud vases from Heath Ceramics and a few other odds and ends. The teak money, vintage hat form, phrenology head, limestone chunk, vintage globe, ceramic horse head, and turquoise dish all came from eBay (yes, I have a problem); the oval "tree head portrait" is by Sarah Ogren; the cream vase and nesting bowls are by Sara Paloma, nabbed at one of her studio sales; the paper-maché vessels are by Up in the Air Somewhere; and the white bowl is from Perch!

The round metal table is from the flea market, and the round white side table is (a vintage Saarinen knockoff) is from eBay.

Now, as for paint colors: I'm a little stumped. All I know is that I have to get rid of this butterscotch-camel hue. It's a nice color -- I'm just sick of it, and I want something a bit brighter and fresher. Should we paint the room white? (I can't believe I'm actually typing that, since Nick and I spent more than a decade waiting for the day when we'd have a place of our own that we could paint anything but white. But I'm much more into Scandinavian brightness and simplicity these days, so I've got white paint on the brain.) Maybe dove gray? Other ideas? Anyone? Anyone?

(P.S. If you missed my earlier House in Progress posts, you can see them all here.)

Giving in the 60s, Week III

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court

In the summer I posted these three bronze 18th-century greyhounds from Joseph Braswell's collection, but I saved the remaining figures for this season. They originally appeared in a story titled, Animal Spirits: New Life for the Accessory, part of House Beautiful's 1968 holiday issue. Animal figures were deemed ubiquitous but nonetheless still "the" accessory to have that year.

"Comparable to the status scarf or the bogus jewel, the lurking animal is a perfect foil for stones, porcelain, or clusters of ferns in whatever magical arrangements the imagination can conjure. And, found in important scale -- like the African bull on the following page -- the animal can easily dominate a room."

The magazine stated that most of the creatures photographed for the story were found in European antique shops by American decorators and placed in their homes for the story.

I'm struck by how similar the HB examples are to the dogs, turtles, birds and lions seen right now in shops. When I was in Providence Antiques the other day, this brass turtle in the color image was still available. Like the 1960s version, the shell lifts off so small objects can be stored. In the 60s of course, cigarettes were stashed here.

Megan Arquette took this picture of the gorgeous turquoise dog at Chapman Radcliff before it closed.

Brilliant Asylum Visits Christmas House (Part I)

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court

Yesterday my design blogging colleague and fellow adventurous spirit, Brilliant Asylum, was on assignment, gingerly walking through a grand Northwest Atlanta home that will open to the public for tours this weekend. Not wanting to spoil the surprise for all the prospective visitors, she proceeded with caution and snapped just a few vignettes. Below you can read her own commentary and see her personal pictures. Many thanks to Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Editorial Director Clinton Smith for his hospitality. Here's BA:

As a Style Court "special correspondent", I had the opportunity to take a sneak peak at The 2008 Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Christmas House. The entire showhouse is to die for, but I immediately recognized this particular room from the concept boards Courtney had posted earlier in September.

This year, designer Mallory Mathison proves that both the laundry room & home office can transcend their workhorse origins to become the most charming spaces in the house. Below I have posted a few details from these cozy adjoining rooms.

Blanc de Chine figures rest on brackets above a sumptuous, "Tigre" silk-velvet covered slipper chair. I believe all the fabrics, wallpapers and trims seen in this space are from Scalamandre.

This little niche is the perfect spot for "paying Santa's bills" as the designer says in the November issue of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles.

Personalized writing pads match the monogrammed garment bags in the neighboring laundry room.

More luxe fabrics elevate the style quotient in an area usually reserved for mundane chores.

And to top it all off, a chic chandelier crowns the room with a dash of Chinese red.

To see the rest of Mallory's realized vision and the rooms of dozens of amazing designers, I highly suggest a visit to the  Christmas House (November 15th through December 7th). All items seen here are for sale with a percentage benefiting the Alliance Children's Theater.

For details about related happenings and seminars, visit the AH & L blog.

BTW: Clearly Mallory is a fan of blanc de chine (all white Chinese, or Chinese-inspired, porcelain). Click here for related reading.

Genoa: Say it's Not So

11/04/2008, 21:06 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)

Genoa is closing after 38 years. Billed as the premier restaurant in Portland, known widely for its regional Italian cooking and meticulous service, it just became available on Passport, but now is closing on November 22nd.

(Owner Kerry) DeBuse says he spent tens of thousands of dollars upgrading the old-fashioned dining room in June. Business had been slow since early summer, he says, "but it all changed 180 degrees within a week of the recent (Wall Street) crash."When the problems went global, the bottom fell out.

I've dined there possibly twice or more and have never been disappointed. Due to the upper end pricing, you didn't go all the time, but it was the place for a special occasion.

Ready To Go-Go?

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Bluelines

While the biggest music release of the season will be Coldplay's Viva La Vida, it's not exactly the kind of album that will prompt non-stop dancing and fun at your summer party.

For that, you will want something that moves and sways. Chuck Brown is a perfect good-time starter.

51fyfpdvbkl_ss500_

Known as the "Godfather of Go-Go" (a musical mix of funk, R&B, and hip-hop), Chuck is over 70 and still pumping out exuberant, swaggering songs.

You won't regret picking up a classic like "Do You Know What Time It Is" along with extra ice and bug candles.

What gets your party started?

Ribbon Obsession

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court

In her morning report from Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Christmas House, Brilliant Asylum mentioned Nicholas Kniel Fine Ribbons and Embellishments. Although I'm a serious ribbon junkie, I have to confess that this shop has been off my radar. Located in Sandy Springs, it's just outside my usual stomping ground in the city. But I'm thrilled to know about another good local source.

Kniel offers hand-dyed silk ribbons similar to the peacock-blue sample shown above, as well as grosgrain, velvet, taffeta, organdy, satin, novelty styles, vintage pieces, feathers, and all sorts of trims and millinery flowers.

For gift wrapping techniques and inspiration, be sure to check the AH & L blog; more information about seminars held in conjunction with Christmas House should be added soon.

Many thanks to Millie, a.k.a. Brilliant Asylum, for giving us a thoughtful sneak peek at the showhouse. Remember, proceeds benefit the Alliance Children's Theatre and the event has been an annual tradition for 34 years. (It's just day one but I'm already receiving positive emails about Mallory Mathison's laundry room/home office!)

The ribbon and trim in image one came from my own collection but represent the types of things you might find at Kniel's.

Now if you are looking for simple Old School flair, like tartan tins for baked goods (or solid red or white) and other holiday trimmings, be sure to visit Richard's Variety store at 2347 Peachtree Road (404) 237 1412.

Just around the corner, Smith & Hawken is well stocked with paper white bulbs for forcing. This is a good weekend to get started if you want to see blooms before Christmas.

As a sidenote, I have to say that everyone who receives one of my homemade, hand-lined envelopes this season (not shown yet on this blog) is going to think I copied these exquisite versions from Cartier, shown in the December Elle Decor. So much for trying to be original.

retro faucet, modern function: the dishmaster

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: shelterrific

If you like a retro kitchen look but also want real utility in your fixtures, Pam of Retro Renovation has the perfect holiday gift for you. She just launched a new site, Dishmaster Living, where she’s selling the Dishmaster, a kitchen faucet that looks almost the same as when it debuted in the late 1940s, but is still being built brand-new. Says Pam, “The Dishmaster makes washing the dishes fun via the ‘Push Button Dishwashing’ action of the special aerator brush wand, which dispenses soapy sudsy water and rinses clean, too.” And it turns out there’s more to that than just retro charm — the Dishmaster also conserves water, energy and detergent when hand-washing dishes. Purchase three different styles of the Dishmaster at Dishmaster Living. –Mary T.

So Long, Farewell, auf Weidersehen, Goodbye!

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: decor8

Today is my final day of work for this week, I’ve decided that since I run my own business I am entitled to take normal holidays off just like everyone else. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and though no one observes it here in Germany, I decided that I am taking it off anyway! I’m also taking Friday off so I can enjoy a much needed 4 day weekend. Yippee! I can’t wait to unplug from the computer for a few days and jump into some crafting projects. I want to make several mini paintings for friends, work on some projects around my apartment, and just enjoy the last 3 weeks in Germany as I leave in 22 days (wahhh!) and head back to the states for the winter. Tomorrow begins the annual Weihnachtsmärkte for the next three weeks so I’ll be out and about with my camera and of course, my wallet! I love to shop at these little vendors, I usually don’t spend much money but I do enjoy all of the treats and wooden toys. I am so looking forward to this short vacation.

Here are some of my current Flickr faves. Please click here to view them all, you can click on the mini photos once you are on Flickr to view them in full size. Pay special attention to the little fox. Once you click on him you will find the most lovely story.

Have a bright and beautiful few days and since you’re an international crowd and not all celebrate Thanksgiving since it’s primarily an American holiday, I’ll simply wish you a lovely time doing whatever it is that you will do until we meet again. I’ll see you on Monday, December 1st.

“I’m glad… to go…. I cannot tell a lie… so Long, Farewell, auf Weidersehen, Goodbye….I leave and heave a sigh and say goodbye!” - Lyrics from the Sound of Music.
