Book Group
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedidBook Group.....really just an excuse to get together with friends I have known for 10 years or more. Ever since we met when our kids were in preschool. The kids ended up in different schools with different friends and interests....but we Moms just kept getting together. Once a month. We have long since abandoned any sort of Book Group protocal. We do assign a book, but whether it is read or not is not really the point. Sometimes we discuss it...somtimes we don't. Mostly we just get the temperature of what our kids are going through and what we are going through as a result. What our relationships are doing...where they are going or not going with our spouses. We have talked over the divorces, the new boyfriends. Two of my friends have weathered bouts of breast cancer and all that that entails. There have been career changes, parents passing, exciting travels, kids' high school graduations. You know....life.
Like I said....the books are a great excuse, but hardly the point.
Here was my pick for the book group we just had last night at my house:
A wonderful perspective on this woman's life and her courage, joys and sorrows in living it.
Enjoy your weekend!
44. Eco Style
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOWeveryone should be living GREEN these days.
here are some great eco style's from LivingEtc
Recycle, Reduce, Reuse... currently my garbage bin, recycling bin and food composte bin are all outside in the garage. I would love something like this inside without it being too distracting.
If you're a big wine drinker like myself, you probably have a case full of empty wine bottles that you've been storing for some extra cash, well what a great idea to turn some of them into pieces of art or decor. Old wine bottles, painted in black gloss and black matt spray paint, or chalk board paint and you can write on them, use them as center pieces or just dramatic eye candy! this is definitely a project i want to try out.
Dragons and Tigers
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedidIn Spring, there are iris and lambs ear, magnolias and cherry trees blossoming.
Most passers-by are fooled into thinking my neighborhood is just another pretty place to live. A place where the neighbors plant rock roses and iris around the stop signs. A place where the kids are picked up in carpools for school, and cars are given a wash on the weekends.
But they would be wrong........ We have a secret. We have people that are extraordinary here. And we have creatures that are strange and beautiful.
There are dragons here with red and golden wings, and cobalt scales. They breath fire from mouths agape with sharp white teeth.
We have white tigers with ruby red eyes that stand guard to protect us from any who would harm us.
There are fairies with gossamer wings of opalescent glass who look from the windows.
There are griffins and flying fish.
There are hobbits in holes.
And we have miniature gardens for the gnomes and brownies that gather here.
And the people here are artists and magicians. They can create new worlds from the clay of the earth. They can entrance and mesmerize the lucky few who chance upon their handiwork.
Not an ordinary neighborhood, this.
The owners of this house have been working to create handmade tiles to adorn their house since long before I moved here over 16 years ago. Every year there is some new treasure to discover. There is a glimpse of some scaffolding in the far left of the last picture indicating there will soon be more to capture the imagination.
40. Happy Family Day Torontonians!
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOWFamily Day: The holiday that isn't really a holiday
for all of us in toronto, ontario, today is a holiday that isn't really a holiday. our very first family day, stat holiday.
i'm sitting in front of my laptop at home today with my husband on one computer and my brother on another looking for books to start our book club off with. beats sitting in the office anyday! but it's too bad that this holiday has already taken on a bit of tarnish. as stated in the Star today ...
"Family Day is turning out to be a logistical nightmare for many, and it isn't even panning out as a universal holiday for everyone in Ontario.
Instead of a province at leisure, as Premier Dalton McGuinty promised during the provincial election campaign last fall, an estimated 40 per cent of us will be reporting to work first thing Monday morning, trudging through more snow and sleet while the other 60 per cent, including our neighbours and friends, stay home in their flannel pyjamas doing battle with their kids for time on the computer.
But as McGuinty himself noted, it is our first Family Day holiday, and perhaps there are a few wrinkles that still need ironing out.
wrinkle out the bumps Premier, i'm going to enjoy my day at home and i suggest you all do the same too torontonians! Happy Family Day!

Good Friends
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Landfair Furniture (Blog)I consider myself fortunate to have so many close friends. These three women have been my close friends since the eighties (Gail on the left), since the seventies (Sandy on the right), and Marsha in the middle since first grade. That's me in the yellow coat.
The four of us have been in a book club for too many years and recently, Gail moved to Boise. Do we replace her? We decided no, we will just all fly to Boise once a quarter and have our meeting there.
It's not all work. Here, we visited a winery and posed in the sun.
The book club has been wonderful. We've each read books we might not ever picked up, both fiction and non-fiction, our friendship has deepened, and we are the richer for it.

Favorite Things (Part II)
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: BluelinesVolume Two of "Lines & Shapes," a series of small books I co-curate with Maria Vettese, came out last week.
This book's theme is "block," and it's dedicated to projects created by our contributing artists. I find the projects so creative and absorbing, and hope that others will too.
But I'm especially fond of a section in the back of this book, where we show some of the artist's "favorite things." I thought I’d share images of these pages, which include favorite corners of the artist's homes and studios, and single objects which make them happy.

And here is one of my favorite things (not included in the book). It’s a framed bird print, purchased by my mom at Sears in the 1970s.
Reader Decorating Dilemma: Lighting
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedidWhat does one do when trying to update a space from an old ceiling fan to a new light fixture, especially when ceilings are not very high? This was a question posed to me by a very kind reader, Becky.
Becky is settling into her home and was asking me if I could help her with her lighting dilemma. We have been corresponding and she was kind enough to send me some pictures of the Living Room and Bedroom in question. I assured her that we would all chip in and give her some creative solutions. So I hope you all give your opinions and help here!
Here is the ceiling fan to be replaced....centered in a coffer in the ceiling. I think we might have a little more height to play around with here than in the bedroom below. The ceilings at the crown molding are 8 feet high. It looks to me like the coffer might go up another 12-18 inches higher.
Becky has gotten a good start with an English Country style in a camel, emerald and cranberry color scheme. She is craving a lantern style fixture, which I think is a great idea. We just need to make sure the height is appropriate. So here are some thoughts for the Living Room:
This lantern is one that Becky had found, and I think it is beautiful and would work very well if it were just a bit smaller.
Niermann Weeks is a company that offers fixtures in more than one size. I love that. This Chinoiserie Tole Lantern picks up on the red colors Becky has in her palette and adds quite a bit of style I think! It comes in a 15x15x25, which would make a nice statement, or a smaller size: 13x13x24.
Another idea besides a lantern style is this Armillary Chandelier, also from Niermann Weeks. It also comes in two sizes: 24d x 16.5h and 38d x 25.5h. Another eye catcher!
This Lantern is from 1st Dibs through Lumiere. Again, I like the idea of the red tole. This fixture measures 19" diam x 30"h. Perhaps a little on the large side. Becky might need to measure for this one!
I love the idea of this fixture perhaps with a red paint . Also from 1st Dibs through Brunelli Designs. 1950's made in Italy, the size is 13" diam x 15"h. It may be a bit too small for the space.
This is Becky's Guest Room. The ceiling here are 8 feet high, so options are more limited.
I think a semi-flush mount fixture is what is called for here. But to get the lantern look, I found a couple of options from Circa Lighting:
These work well for the height of the room and bring a little of that English Style to the room as well.
I hope these suggestions have been helpful! And please chime in everyone. I know there are many of you that will have more sources and great ideas.

I don't think I've featured a fountain until now, and it's not because I'm anti-fountain. I just think it's very hard to find interesting, well designed fountains. With every home goods store in the US selling low end fountains they all look pretty much the same, cheep. But this is an exception. The Falling Water Fountain is sharp looking and comes in this great blue but can be special ordered in other colors. It has a universal appeal that is modern, Zen, and would even fit in a traditional designed space.five things we learned last week

Bright ideas we gathered from your comments.
1) Microfiber is a good choice for people with cats. Pencils let us know that while her Sleepytime Rocker is a big hit with the cat, cleaning it isn’t a big issue: “Can?t wait to rock a baby in it, but so far the cat really is enjoying it — and her abundant Maine Coon fur doesn?t stick to the microfiber upholstery.” See where else we clicked last week.
2) You can find toothbrushes that not only are colorful and recycled, they look like they’ll fit in most holders! Inez weighed in on the toothbrush storage post with a link to these toothbrushes by Alan Stuart. Too cool.
3) We’re not the only ones who can’t leave Target with just one thing. Okay — we pretty much knew that already, but we did recognize ourselves in Becky’s comment: “I?m off to Target with the intention of spending $10, but I know I won?t leave until my cart is full. I?ll wind up with an array of unrelated items, like milk, a Jovavitch-Hawk skirt that makes me look really fat, a ‘fiendish’ platinum soduku book, some slutty looking shoes I?ll never end up wearing, some men?s pajama pants, a funny garden gnome, cat litter, a Victoria Hagan mirror, a Converse shirt I am way too old to get away with, a DVD, toilet paper, and a pink garden hose!” Thank you, readers, for always making us laugh. And check out that $10 hot pink garden hose here.
4) There are a lot of earth-friendly cat litters out there. (That sometimes dogs love a little too much, too). Susan Y says, “I used World?s Best, Swheat Scoop, Feline Pine, and right now I?m testing the litter called ‘Space’ which they sell at Trader Joe?s. World?s Best and Swheat Scoop were good, but I have a dog that LOVED to eat the litter. I?m still unsure about Space because they are made of full silica pellets, so they don?t have dust, but I?m not sure how biodegradable they are. Anyone have info?” See the Feline Fresh post here.
5) Some husbands have really interesting hobbies. Quite a few readers were excited by Angela’s family foray into beekeeping, and some of you have wanted to try it out yourselves. But only mod*mom had this to say: “I would freak out with all those bees. My husband is a falconer + it took a long time for me to like having a bird on my glove. I’m not as relaxed as he is.” Click to learn more about Angela and Chad’s new beekeeping venture.

Have a voyeuristic itch to scratch? We do — peeking into homes far more luxe than ours is both a pleasure and tease. Happily, we found a new source on line for some mighty swanky kitchens. Over at epicurious.com, they’ve posted a few video tours of some famous kitchens of people we’d love to have dinner with (especially if they were cooking). Our favorite is Isaac Mizhari, who gushes about all of his kitchen accessories, including bowls from Target, a chic (Alessi?) bread box and his espresso machine. Sanganer is a place in Rajasthan that is famous for it's traditional hand block printing. Sanganeri prints usually consists of floral motifs and the colours used are natural dyes derived from Turmeric, Indigo plants, banana leaves and so on.
The colours are usually bright & vibrant which is synonymous with the colourful Rajasthan, hence it was a pleasant surprise when I saw these prints in subdued and in single colour in the Toast Catalogue Online.

Check out their Quilts, Blankets & Throws in subtle colours. They have some lovely pillow and cushion covers too.( images from Toast Catalogue)
Top Design Welcomes India Hicks
04/21/2008, 14:34 | Original Site: decor8
Here's a little bit about India that you may not have known that I find quite interesting, "Host India Hicks is the daughter of famed interior decorator David Hicks and Lady Pamela Hicks. Born in London, England, she was named in honor of her grandfather, Lord Mountbatten of Burma the last Viceroy to India. Her godfather, HRH Prince Charles, chose Hicks to be a bridesmaid in his wedding to the late Lady Diana Spencer in 1990." - Bravo TV.
What do you think of adding India to the mix to replace Todd as host?

Nickey Kehoe
04/02/2008, 17:26 | Original Site: designer's librarySo I learned about this design duo Nickey Kehoe (Todd Nickey & Amy Kehoe) from Domino magazine's "Domino 10". I love that they describe their approach to interior design as avoiding "design diva energy"! I can understand that. While I can appreciate that type of diva energy and design style, it's not exactly something I'd want in my house. I'm sure their portfolio doesn't show their current projects, so I hope they add more images of their warm minimalist style.
