party perfect

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
i've discovered a new blog to enjoy and another kick-ass lady to admire. party.perfect is just that ~ a perfect place to visit for anything & everything party inspired. a former marthastewart art director, sara hicks malone, is the blog's author. this very talented lady does much more than blog & mommy in nashville. she is also a fabulous graphic designer & stylist. her line of cards can be found at the paper cafe {among other places} and a nice little blog post about her lovely home is on designer's library. sara collects tons of fun ideas & information on her fabulous blog. . . . . definitely worth getting to know.
{thanks to oh happy day for introducing me to sara}

The Modern House with a Soul II

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hatch: The Design Public® Blo

Remember when I told you about this house that I fell in love with on the Modern Atlanta House Tour? Apparently Metropolitan Home found the house as well*. Their photographer Mali Azima provided pictures of it that are far superior to the ones I took on my iPhone! While they have some great shots of the branch chandelier and the folk art collection, they did not show the mask wall! I am not finding this spread on PointClickHome as of yet, so to check it out, you’ll have to buy the December issue and turn to page 134. UPDATE! It’s up, just click here to check it out over at pointclickhome. There was another interesting article written about the home you can check out for free in Creative Loafing.

To see more work by the home’s owner/architects Cara Cummins and Jose Tavel, check out their firm’s website at TaCStudios.com. Also, many of the self-taught artists whose work you see in the home are represented at one of my very favorite spots in Georgia, Around Back at Rocky’s Place.

*I’m trying to remember if Met Home was a sponsor of the tour; I am 99% sure that they were, but the Modern Atlanta website is down at the moment so I cannot confirm. UPDATE: Yes, Met Home was a sponsor, and the MA website is back up! Personally, I prefer a house tour such as this one to one “Idea House.” I think it provides a magazine with so much more to share with their readers. I’m sure an idea house probably helps the magazine strike deals with advertisers, and in the already overcrowded shelter mag category this is likely crucial to help them stay alive (O At Home is the latest one to bite the dust), but the feeling of one big advertising spread is apparent in a lot of Idea Home pages.

show & tell time ~ cpw apartment

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
i'm so excited to share this with you! a large apartment remodel & redesign project that i was fortunate enough to work on has come to completion, and the project manager has sent over some nice site photos. this is the icing on the cake of a lot of hard work from a lot of talented people. there's really nothing like the satisfaction of seeing a project complete and the clients happily moving in.
this project had a lot of special challenges. . . . . for one, our design office is in san francisco and the project is at central park west in new york. so there was a lot of back-&-forth travel for our team & the clients. another massive challenge is depicted here:
many of the client's art pieces were too large to fit into the building's freight elevator so we had to close off streets, bring in a crane, remove the outer windows of the living room, and lift the art pieces all the way up to the apartment. i'm so glad our project manager was there with camera in hand so we could all share in the marvel of it.
there are more photos on my flickr, but here are a few of my favorites:
{main hallway ~ highlighting the zebra wood floors found throughout the apartment}

{the living room and the grand curving staircase}

{the game table with the piano in the background}

{the den/study with red acrylic backed niches and shelving}

{the kitchen ~ this in particular was my baby of the project. lots of detailing went into it, which can't be seen from a photo, but i suppose that's the mark of good design right? :o) }

{the bar ~ leather paneled walls, resin bar top, patent leather built in sofa and some very chic bar stools}

{the yoga room has cherry wood paneled walls with a dark red/brown stain and a gorgeous antique lotus mandala panel from thailand}

{the design detailing that went into this apartment is staggering ~ these two photos show a nice example: the ceiling coffers in the dining room echo the skylight pattern in the stairwell}

{a lovely view from the deck on a gorgeous new york afternoon}

74. For the love of BLACK

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

black and be a daunting color to work with, especially on walls but for some reason I've always been drawn to the dark allure of black interiors. it's sexy, dramatic and so out of the norm.

so you can imagine my excitement when my client mentioned last night that she wanted to incorporate some sort of black in her space! at first i thought she meant black furnishings but when i realized she wanted more - on the walls, on the floors, on the stairs or where ever my heart desired, my eyes widen and my heart started skipping beats ... could i be hearing this right? I have the opportunity to live out my black interior dreams through her? and so start my quest to find the most inspiring black spaces.

My Dining Table.

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid
Dining tables......there are so many options. There are round ones, rectangular, racetrack. There are wood tables, and glass topped and stone topped tables, and lacquered tables. There those that seat two, four, ten...and way beyond. There is the pedestal table and the four legged table. And don't get me started on the styles or periods.

Veranda, September, October 2006, Photo by Laura Resen

It can be quite a daunting task to find just the right thing for oneself. One must consider the size and shape of the room, and how many guests are typically around the table. Is one's lifestyle casual? Formal? And, very importantly, what can one afford? These are all of the practical considerations. But then there are the preferential considerations. What does one "like"?

I have been on the hunt for a Dining Room table for my family for a few years now. My criteria: it has to be round, or nearly so; it must seat up to 10; it can't be too formal; I prefer wood because it is more forgiving and I like the warmth; and I would love to have something unique. I can go contemporary with an antique chair or antique with a more contemporary chair.

Well...to cut the the chase, I saw this table in Veranda magazine and thought "this is it!" It's perfect! It seats eight, it's wood, it's beautiful and unique. Any sort of chair would look wonderful with it. And one thing that really matters to me: one can comfortably fit crossed legs under the "skirt" of the table. It has these wonderful Palladian arched openings. There are no sharp edges to bump a leg on. Even better: it was designed by Robsjohn-Gibbings.

The down side: it was designed by Robsjohn-Gibbings and is VERY unique. In fact I can't find another to even look at, much less purchase. ( A little help 1st dibs?)This particular table is owned by Dara Caponigro, decorating editor of Domino Magazine. You may have caught it in this new book:

Photo from Amazon Website

So Dara, if you ever want to talk. If you are planning to move into, say, a bigger place where this table just won't work anymore, could you please......just shoot me an email? I would really appreciate it. I have started a fund. Perhaps by the time I have enough in "the fund", you may have moved on to something new? Just a thought. Call me.

Apparently it could be and can be.

And is.

But you see, it's really all about you, friendly reader.  Yes, You.

You came, you went.
You came again.
And it added up, you see.

It added up to one million.
To one million visits to this little blog.

She scratched her head again
.)

And so in honor of the time you took to visit a girl in a far away olive grove in Marrakech.......
you are cordially invited to the Great My Marrakech Give Away!

(Dr. Seuss-like trumpets blare,  children clap their hands with glee! A thousand balloons are set free in the air.... )

The rules are simple (because the blogging girl is known - even at the best of times - to be easily confused).

Just leave a comment.  Any comment will do.  Big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones, nice ones (Oh please, not mean ones).  This is an equal opportunity give away after all.....

After a series of blind taste tests before a panel of esteemed judges involving a random numbers generator and rabbits pulled out of hats with game show-like flourishes (you see, she was confused already) a winner will be announced.....and a gift handpicked by the blogging girl will be put in a box and tied with a bow.  And sent off .....perhaps to you.  Yes, perhaps to you

(Tempt your fate, a little voice whispered.....)

Juicy prize

Check out VixenHill.com where you can design your own eat-in porch, right online. The online porch builder is a brand new feature of their website that also lets you build shutters and gazebos online. These are fine wood products that are crafted in Pennsylvania. The design is modular so you can build it yourself ? complete with architectural features, screens and glass inserts. I?ve had the pleasure of touring their factory and the cedar smell is intoxicating. It makes you want to sit back in an Adirondack chair, read a book and forget the world. Better yet, put up an antique table with a country cloth and make a three-season dining space that will have your friends and family bringing you bottles of wine just to enjoy it.

Porch Systems offer added space for entertaining by VixenHill.com

Don?t have a porch or deck you can screen in? Vixen Hill?s pergolas are made from quality Western Red Cedar - perfect for climbing plants and a durable focal point that will age gracefully without staining or painting. Create a little Mediterranean get-away that shades you from the sun and sets the stage for memorable dinners and get-togethers. Vixen Hill offers classic teak furniture or you can visit Brown Jordon for some amazing outdoor furnishings that look like they belong indoors. According to the National Association of Realtors, deck (porch) improvements are renovations that pay back about 80% of their value when you sell - an affordable DIY home improvement that adds living space and pays back over time.

Lauren Marsden is a talented Victoria artist who creates some of the most amazing artistic creations I have ever seen. Her indoor/outdoor carpeting gallery space of Home Sweet Home (above) exhibit blew me away. Her latest artistic endeavour is called Territorial Knittings... she is knitting street sign covers for every street she has lived on in Victoria. The pattern is an exact duplicate of the sign itself... very clever, very creative!

spoonflower power

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
my friend, tom, sent over a link to a wonderful concept company that's still in its beta form ~ spoonflower. thanks to a group of inspired folks in chapel hill, north carolina, spoonflower is an answer to a huge void in the crafter-designer-artist market: giving us all the ability to design and make our very own fabric. yes! for a reasonable price you can have your very own designs printed onto fabric. how wonderful is that?!? all you have to do is create a design, make it into a tif file, and send it off to spoonflower to print onto 44" 100% kona® cotton fabric {a 2nd choice of fabric will be available soon}.
from their website: "spoonflower exists to give crafters a powerful tool for expressing their creative visions using fabric. it gives individuals the power to print their own designs on fabric that they can then use to make quilts, clothes, pillows, blankets, framed textile art and many, many other things that might surprise you."
they have a nice little blog and a great flickr group.
i snagged some of my favorite projects from their flickr group to share with & inspire you here:

Modern Economy Online Sample Sale - October 8 and 9

09/28/2008, 10:03 | Original Site: designer's library
Index_1008

Sorry, I've been away from this blog. The biggest thing coming up is Modern Economy's (first ever) Online Sale starting Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 9:00 AM (PST).

After getting many requests to bring this sale to cities everywhere, I figured the best thing is just to put practically the entire sale online to give everyone a taste of what our sales are like. As usual, everything will be up to 80% off. Although this is a sample sale, much of our merchandise is first quality overstock. And just like our regular city-based sales, it's only for a limited time. Originally, I had planned for it to be 24-hour sale, but I've extended it another day. This sale is now only 48-hours long. So arrive early to our website for the best selection!

And join our mailing list, too. Individuals on our list will get special privileges and will also be entered in a drawing to win $200 in merchandise.

Here are some of the products you'll find at the sale:

Angela

A selection of cotton and wool rugs and bags from Angela Adams.

Picture 13
Tablecloth, napkins, dishtowels from Simrin

Birdvase_300x225
Adorable and stylish vases from Joana Mendicino.

Picture 9
Eco-friendly hemp and linen pillows by Balanced Design.

Another Gene Hovis Creation

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of Chic

Remember my post on the late Gene Hovis- the man whose gorgeous home and envy-inducing linen and silver collection piqued my fascination? Well, he popped up again, this time in the Tiffany Gourmet Cookbook. (Not that this is news or anything. The book was published in 1992.)

Hovis' library/dining room was the setting for this elegant meal. I know, I know- I've read where many are tired of the library cum dining room concept. But don't you kind of fall in love all over again with the idea when you see how smashing Hovis' dining room looks? Good books, good food, and a beautifully appointed room. Really, what could be better?

The menu consisted of Crown Roast of Lamb with brussel sprouts, deviled carrots, and pan-fried shredded potatoes, served on Tiffany's "Yellow Bird" faience platter. Hovis also included a yummy looking tomato aspic with shrimp and crawfish nestled on a Tiffany ribbed silver tray. (And please, don't knock the tomato aspic- it's really good. I swear!).

The dessert course- coffee profiteroles with chocolate sauce- is laid out in front of a 19th century French hand-blocked paper screen- yes, I am coveting this. And wouldn't you be pleased to take tea or coffee served from this Louis XIV service from Tiffany's?

So my question is- do any of you still entertain like this? And if so, how often? I love formal entertaining but don't do it often enough. I think Mr. Hovis has inspired me to do so.

(You might also be interested in Gene Hovis' Uptown Down Home Cookbook. Truth be told, the dust jacket is not the most elegant looking thing, but the recipes look really good. A lot of classic, tried and true recipes as well as some Southern favorites. If I can find the time, I'll test out a few and let you know!)

I blogged Israeli industrial designer Yael Falk's (aka Etsy seller YooLa) delicate crocheted wire creations not too long ago, but I'm nuts about her new pendant lights (like the Pomegranate Lampshade, above, $90).

I love the webbed shadows the lights cast -- crazy cool.
