Recreating your favorite franchise at home

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
Randomly surfing the variety of design discussion forums out there, I found a posting on HGTV's discussion board that "revealed" several of Panera Bread's interior wall colors. I never knew they were top secret, but I can't tell you how many times I have had a client ask for their colors. Instead of using these exact colors, I steer people towards using colors appropriate for their particular spaces that may be evocative of this franchise's visual look.
That warm orangey color is from Benjamin Moore called Golden harvest 2157-02

It's great to find inspiration in spaces you love, but don't get hung up on what color was used exactly. I want to tear my hair out when I read shelter magazines stating this or that designer's favorite paint colors, giving you the exact paint brand and code, as though you can replicate their design simply by using their color choices. Colors will vary dramatically based on the context of how they are used.
House Beautiful magazine

The gold color on the right is evidently Ben Moore Semolina#2155-40, just for your reference.
Love the blue and orange combo-isn't it cheerful? And really plays up the warm honey tones in the breads. These were the only pics I was able to snap at my local Panera Bread, as evidently, picture- taking in the store is not permitted. I was quickly asked to put my camera away. Probably didn't help that I was toting this enormous camera with large lenses... Not the most subtle of approaches- I don't think I'd make a very good spy!

Bungalow 5, New Stuff

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: katiedid
Bungalow 5 is at it again! They have introduced some new accessories, art and lighting to their line. I thought it might be fun to "place" them in a few interiors from my treasured House and Garden magazines:

This "Primavera Box" would look so pretty in this Master Bedroom designed by Pauline Boardman Pitt. House and Garden, July 2000. Photo by Michel Arnaud

I think the Sienna Cachepot belongs in this Guest Room by Muriel Brandolini.House and Garden, August 1999. Photo by pieter Estersohn

This Library by Madeline Stuart needs this Siena Tray in red. House and Garden December 2004. Photo by Thomas Loof

I think this "Autumn Pavilion" piece could be a stunner on the wall of this Diamond and Baratta Bedroom. House and Garden, October 2002, Phto by Jason Schmidt

This "Khan Deer" piece could work in this Master Bedroom by designer Mary McDonald. House and Garden, June 2002. Photo by Melanie Acevedo

I would love to see this "Barocco" lamp in this Bedroom of world class colorist and designer Tricia Guild. House and Garden, August 2005. Photo James Merrell

This "Egret" Lamp would look so fresh in his Loggia by by Mary McDonald. House and Garden, June 2002. Photo by Melanie Acevedo

What do you think of this "Siam" Lamp in the Living Room of Buster Keaton's restored house. Living Room by Mary McDonald. House and Garden, June 2002. Photo by Melanie Acevedo

The "Tangiers" Lamp would be a great addition to this space in the home of Greek artist Konstantin Kakanias. House and Garden, June 2002. Photo by Melanie Acevedo.

edward and i went to the Interior Design Show 2008 this past saturday like many others and i always say this but next year i'm not going on a "public's" night. man was it crowded! i don't do well in crowds.

i had to work and couldn't make trades night on thursday so a few of my fellow designers and i trecked down to check out the show over the weekend. needless to say, there were many great exhibits, but many of the same faces, same booths and names we all love and know.

if you had a chance to go, i would love to hear what you all thought of the show.

LOVING those STRIPES

04/01/2008, 07:08 | Original Site: MadeByGirl
Sooo many of you liked the striped Louis chairs below that I had to go in search for striped fabrics. I didn't have much time, but this is what I came up with. Along with a few other items like an awesome chair from House to home UK. If ANYONE knows of any other site that offers rainbow (colorful) striped fabrics, PLEASE leave the website in the comments.

This fabric above I just bid on at EBAY. I hope I win!! Its 4 yards.

Here's another cute little striped chair from House to Home UK.

All this cool fabric above is from one of my favorite stores- IKEA.

Above, colorful and totally pretty striped canvas pouch from Nest Pretty Things.

Diwali Inspirations...

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
With Diwali- 'The Festival of Lights' around the corner, I have been looking everywhere for inspiration to decorate my home. There are amazing, sparkly diyas & lamps available in the market, fancy gift packs of dry fruits & sweets, amazing packaging of chocolates and so on but I want to do something innovative, something simple, something beautiful, something traditional, something different.

So why look elsewhere? I keep sharing ideas from my home now and then, but this is the first time I have decided to share Diwali Decorating Ideas formally.

Some ideas & inspirations from my home to your home every single day from today to Diwali that is on 9th Nov, 2007. (Ok, I have said it!)

Now please be with me and do tell me what you think of this. While I try and share some inspiring ideas, the next couple of days...

IKEA fialena

02/26/2008, 15:48 | Original Site: red.house

: : This is a new serie of patterns at IKEA, called .fialena. I adore the name, it's what my parents would always call my sister. she was .fialena., I was .pyret. and my brother .skrotten. Maybe not the most flattering name for my brother, but it was very cute when he was young.

Anywho, these patterns are very much in line with the current scandinavian folklore pattern trend that's happening. making me think my own patterns are very current and aligned with this trend?? IKEA why won't you call?

I found this while I was browsing the .style files. blog.

Pitch your tent...

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Rang-Decor {Interior Ideas predominantly Indian}
...on the exotic desert sands of Rajasthan. Soak in the local flavour sitting by the bonfire and listening to the folk songs or wake up to call of peacocks just outside your tents...
The concept of Manvar Desert Camp dates back to the 17th century when Mughal Emperor Jehangir known for his luxurious lifestyle used to set up royal tents with all the amenities during their hunting trips. Manvar Desert Camp has 30 tents arranged in a semi circle around a central 'durbar' hall. The central dining area from where stunning sunrises & sunsets can be seen. The interiors of the tents are extremely luxurious with custom designed block print motifs & large teak wood beds. Huge windows with pull up flaps allow the fresh desert breeze to come in and nets to keep insects out:-)

Live like royalty from the bygone era. Spend some amazing time under the starlit skies of Rajasthan in Manvar Desert Camp.

Kim Myles

04/04/2008, 17:00 | Original Site: Design*Sponge

On my blog, it?s no secret that I?m a big fan of Kim Myles. Anyone who can resist her bubbly optimism and bold use of color might just be a stick in the mud, if you ask me. I asked Kim if she?d mind answering some couple-focused decorating questions, and she happily agreed. Check out her site for more information on her design work and design- and budget-savvy show Myles of Style, if you haven’t made her acquaintance yet!

Elka: Do you see any trends that follow gender lines (such as, men are more conservative with color; women are more daring with new trends)? Or is it a toss-up?

Kim: So far, it?s a toss up. The only thing that I?ve found to be almost universal is the fear of bold color. It?s funny, I live for color, and everyone I design for on ?Myles of Style? says they like color too, they?ve just been paralyzed by the thought of making the wrong choice?.it?s so fascinating to me! If I had one wish, it would be that we as people who live in a visual world would embrace brave color choices and combos, and just let go of the fear. It?s only color?if you hate it, it?s the easiest thing in the world to change.

E: How stressful is redecorating for a couple?

K: I don?t find it stressful at all; I think that my past life as a hairdresser trained my listening skills to the extreme. My job is to go in, meet the homeowners, and discuss what their dreams and hopes for the space are. Sometimes that includes reading between the lines, and hearing what isn?t being said out loud, and I think that?s one of my strengths.

E: How do you try to make differing design ideas between each person in the relationship sync up?

K: When people don?t see eye to eye on their space, it?s all about finding the common ground first. Baby steps like, ?Ok, you both agree that you hate the current wall color, right??, gets them on the same page and on the same team. Once we?ve established that, we can delve into the ?why?s? of their dislike of the color, and I find that once people start talking about why they like or dislike something (vs. just making a general blanket judgment), all the walls start to come down. As people, I think we?re all striving to understand each other, so my goal in a situation like that is to be the facilitator.

E: What?s your best piece of advice for couples who are butting heads on decorating schemes?

K: Find one piece that you both love. It can be small; a color, an accessory, etc. Once you find that, you?ve found your bridge, and created the beginnings of a ?map,? so to speak.

E: Is there anything that couples should do for bedrooms to keep them, um, couple-friendly?

K: Yes!!!!!! I am so opposed to TV?s in the bedroom!!!! I?ve heard every reason and justification, but I still believe that the bedroom is where you should be focusing on your partner, rest, and sanctuary. Make sure the lighting is warm, inviting and calm, and treat the bedroom like your own private getaway.

E: What if one half of the couple refuses to give up tacky memorabilia, such as high school football trophies/etc.? How can you work around this obstacle?

K: I think that we all have sentimental items that our partners would rather not be confronted with everyday. It?s all about mutual respect, and a willingness to create a space that works for both of you, so be willing to edit/store/relocate those trophies (or stuffed animals), and start with a clean slate.

From Janet:

The Italians and their kitchens. The Fires Line cooktop by Italian kitchen system designer Binova is especially appealing. Featuring a single row of burners, the cooktop is perfect for a narrow countertop. It can be centered on an island (out of reach of children’s hands) for easy access from either side.  Just approved for the US market in the last six months, it costs approximately $3,500. View the entire Binova line here. Contact USA dealer Haute Living at (312) 329-9000 for pricing and ordering information.

Rainbow of room hues

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Hue
Oh, how I love to see colorful spaces done well. Domino magazine has an online gallery up of beautiful bright rooms in a rainbow of fruit flavors.
"Theatrical color can distract from flaws. Confederate Red draws the eye from the unassuming laminate cabinets in this rental kitchen."
Be sure to read the little description next to each picture- it's useful to read about the effect they were looking to achieve, or the specific challenges of a particular color.

Looking at examples of how colors work together is a great way to get ideas for your own space. Worried about that deep rich eggplant color in your dining room? Look for examples of how others have handled that color. You may get an idea you hadn't thought of before!

Is that her ?

04/04/2008, 21:10 | Original Site: MadeByGirl
Is that Angelina Jolie? No...not exactly. But on the US Magazine site there's a cool slideshow that features everyday people as look-a-likes. It was fun to look through it. I have to say Katie Holmes, Russell Crowe, Angelina Jolie, Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Aniston were my top picks! It was uncanny how much they resembled these stars. Found this via: I heart You Blog. The Well Appointed House

04/10/2008, 16:23 | Original Site: Design Hole
The Well Appointed House is a New York based company founded in 2001 by Melissa Hawks. She wanted to bring unique decorative accessories readily available to the design trade to a broader audience and hence, her company was born.

These pillows are a nice way to bring Spring and Summer into the house. They're handmade needlepoint and embroidered. Melissa's selection runs the gamut from the super-traditional to the more contemporary.

I like the selection I've created. They're bright and cheerful and not the usual thing you find - especially in the needlepoint department.

I used to needlepoint and embroider things. But I found it hard to find patterns that were lively. I also ran out of nieces and nephews who needed Christmas stockings. Now I'm just too busy.

The prices for these pillows shown here run from $58 to $145. - a nice price point.

Thumbtack Press {gorgeousness}

04/25/2008, 00:33 | Original Site: decor8
Here are some fabulous prints that caught my attention today over at Thumbtack Press, who happens to have a very strong collection of prints online featuring the work of some of my favorite artists. I'm hoping that you'll enjoy them along with me. :)

I adore Bride Diving by Penelope Dullaghan and Gossip by Chris Silas Neal. I always seem to go for images of girls jumping, not because I secretly have thoughts of suicide or anything (he he), more because I am constantly jumping into new things and love the thrill of just getting involved in something I'm passionate about. Also shown above is Bluebell by Lilly Piri and Presagio di Primavera by Gianluca Folì. Drool.

Long Beach Shoreline by Shiho Nakaza, I Miss You Already by Jared Drew Moody, Angel by Irana Douer, and This Flooded World by Sarajo Frieden. Isn't Irana amazing?

The Great Flood Series (set of 3) by Oksana Badrak, Spam One-Liners: Happy Life by Linzie Hunter (fun!), HiFi by Chris Silas Neal, and India Dawn by Oksana Badrak.

And finally, Don't You Leave Me Here by Matthew Woodson. Isn't this a melancholy, tender, emotionally charged glimpse into the life of the modern relationship? We all have fears of being abandoned at times and I think artist Matthew Woodson did such a great job capturing this emotion here.
