Klas Fahlen is one of my favorite illustrators. These magazine holders are from his portfolio at the Art Department. The building-scape is totally genius, especially the second image with the plaza perspective illustration.

Recently I had the pleasure of working with photographer Kate Mathis again.

I met Kate years ago when i first started as an prop stylist assistant and have enjoyed her company and work ever since. 

Many of you may recognize her work from the Martha Stewart product packaging photography. She shot both the craft line for Michaels to the Macy's collection. 

Kate can take images like the simple paper flowers below to the sublime level.

With a discerning eye for composition and impeccable perspective and lighting, it's always a pleasure to be on set with Kate.

I went with some of my friends from high school to see The Roots and Erykah Badu on Monday--which was really good. The Roots set was super short (like half an hour) and Erykah's set was super long (like 2-1/2 hours, I think?)! I love that along with her extra large hair which obscured her face, Erykah wore this funky red, grid-patterned pantsuit (which looked like something straight out of Andre 3000's closet), Urkel-style black-rimmed glasses, and mule tennis shoes (at least it looked like that from where I was sitting). I wouldn't doubt she probably had suspenders on underneath, too. Everything about it from the performance and music to her outfit seemed both feminine and masculine, uncompromised, vision-driven, and just plain nutty. Loved it.

Anyway, seeing The Roots again also reminded of a poster I made ten years ago. It was my final project in the one and only graphic design class I've ever taken. I took this class right after college when I realized that I was interested in more artistic pursuits. I remember choosing to hand-make this poster on manila paper instead of using a computer to design it.

It's always interesting to look back on your early work to see how far you've come and at the same time, to see what hasn't changed about you.

One day while Fabienne saw some ad pages in some magazines he was inspired by a photo ( attached below ), to design a bed, here are his own thoughts ?gee I really hate bumping into a hard bed, I want something completely padded, but modern looking?.

Starting from this picture Fabienne has documented in his blog all the steps he made to accomplish this project. Even if the final project doesn’t look that good as that bed from the ad, is a really beautiful piece of furniture for a DIY project. Finally let’s see the final result. Building a Bed Starting from a Picture Saw in a Magazine Ad

Valentino has always been one of my favorite designers. To me, he is one of only a few designers who creates pretty clothing. And no, pretty is not a dirty word. Oh sure there are those fashion mavens who prefer clothing that is esoteric, architectural, conceptual, and the like. And yes, sometimes that clothing can be interesting to look at. But at the end of the day, don't women want to look beautiful and feminine?

I always felt that Valentino put his clients first; he seemed to intuitively understand how to make them look their best. His color palette was sure to make a woman look vibrant and alive: that sizzling Valentino red; pinks and corals; ice blue; black. There were dressmaker details- rosettes, pleats, and embroidery- that took a dress from being merely a dress to an exquisite piece of art. And never was the female figure obscured by extraneous bits and pieces.

I was excited to get a sneak peek at the new Rizzoli publication Valentino: Themes and Variations by Pamela Golbin (Rizzoli; publication date September 9, 2008). The designer, who took his final runway bow earlier this year, is certainly deserving of this lavish treatment of his work and his career. First, the photos are stunning- but with those beautiful dresses and ensembles, how could they not be? The book has minimal text, which is entirely appropriate as the clothing speaks for itself. (For those of you who are not entirely familiar with Valentino, there is an interesting biography provided.) I also thought the designer's work was organized in a very clever way, with pieces being featured in chapters entitled "Themes" (Ornamentation; Technique) and "Variations" (Line; Volume).

What struck me is how many of his designs from the 1950s and 60s look so current, proving that classic, feminine design never goes out of style. I also loved the vintage photos and advertisements which showed Valentino's designs through the years. How fun to see the progression from the swinging 60s to the exotic vibe of the 1970s, the exuberance of the 1980s (I don't care what anyone says- it was a great era for fashion!) to the minimalist 90s.

So why should we devotees of interior design discuss a fashion designer? Because, we have much to learn from the likes of Valentino. At the end of the day, it's about details, craftsmanship, and timeless design. Had Valentino's career been marked by tricks and trends, I don't think he would have survived in the fickle world of fashion for as long as he did. As Valentino said: "I think a couturier must establish his style and stick to it. The mistake of many couturiers is that they try to change their line with every collection. I change a little each time, but never too much, so as not to lose my identity." Perhaps this sentiment might apply to interior design too?

(Just to prove that Valentino's style is not limited to his couture creations, I'll post some images from his London home tomorrow.)

This dress, "Fiesta", was from Valentino's 1959 collection. I'd jump at the chance to wear this dress today- minus the gloves, though.


This orange silk jacket and trousers were designed in 1969. It still looks rather glamorous almost forty years later.


Look at the amazing detail and workmanship of this dress' bodice. Woven silk voile and iridescent sequins in a polychrome marble mosaic motif (Fall/Winter 1990)


You see, the love of coral has been around for a long time. This silk serge gown with handpainted coral motif is from the Spring/Summer 1968 collection. (Photographer Ruven Afanador)

An ad campaign from Fall/Winter 2007. While Valentino's clothes certainly don't need any help from the model's surroundings, it certainly enhances the dress, don't you think?

morning eye-candy: new plates from a series called “between us women” by lisa bengtsson. you may remember lisa’s wallpaper (here and here) but this new series was just launched at formex in stockholm. each image is representative of a woman in one’s family and each plate has a saying on the back associated with that member of the family. you can view more of lisa’s work right here.

I just got back from a quick trip to Portland, Maine. I was there to work, but spent a big portion of the time eating!

Dining in, dining out... both simple food and sophisticated... it was all so delicious.

Ilove using SIMPLE SOLUTIONS in decorating. When it comes time to repaint a room, it is quite possible to spend forever trying to decide what paint colors to choose for woodwork and walls, how to fix less than perfect features, and then another eternity painting straight lines between woodwork and walls (not my favorite task). Sometimes I want a QUICK FIX and an easy answer so I can have a new color in a day (or so!).

I’ll admit it, I’m an impatient decorator. And, honestly, I am too busy to fuss over each and every decision and project in life. In order to get on with enjoying life, yet still have a beautiful home, I have to simplify.

In this space, the simple solution to giving this room a lively new look was Sherwin Williams Westminster Gold #200. Everywhere.

The secret to making this one color paint technique work is to vary the sheen…put a glossier paint on the woodwork to contrast with a satin or flat paint on the walls. That contrast will give just enough variation for interest.

The overall look is cozy, fresh, hides imperfections and lets the furniture and accessories take center stage. The background becomes an effective backdrop to a beautiful room.

And it wasn’t complicated! I like that.

Wouldn?t it be lovely, really, wouldn?t it be lovely to wear pajamas the whole day??..?  And wouldn't it be equally lovely to simply wear slippers all the time? Why then life would be rather like one big pajama party, wouldn?t it? 

(Sigh, let?s face it, the blogging girl was simply trying to rationalize why she so often found herself in Marrakech?s slipper souk, known as the souk de babouches.  At this rate, it might just be easier for her to set up a small cot nearby.)
