1,000 Thank You's! It's my 1,000th Post!

This is my 1,000th blog post. That's a whole lotta words and photos! My first post is dated January 27th, 2005 and was a rehash of a series of decorating tips I'd written. When I decided to start the blog, I really had no idea what I was doing. I decided it made a good electronic "filing cabinet" of ideas and products I wanted to keep track of. I also thought it was a good way to keep alive several articles I'd written for my quarterly company newsletter.

One of my favorite posts from Year 1 (I only wrote 34 posts that whole first year!) was called Consumer Culture Wars. There are no photos, just thoughts. It's pretty good, if I say so myself! Makes me think that I need to do more of that kind of "idea" post in the future. (Note to Domino Magazine - sorry for the dis!)

Bathroom Furniture

I am very fond of placing small pieces of Antique furniture in bathrooms. I think it adds an element of coziness. It also adds interest and personality to a room which we usually don't think about furnishing.

Whether it's a small table {like above} to place some towels on & a beautiful tray with lots of perfume and lotion on for your guests or a lovely old chair upholstered in a pretty fabric, I think it's a great look.

In the Gumdale house I have been working on I suggested this concept to the client and she went with it. We painted the old pieces we found for her bathrooms white and they look fantastic.

So, if you have room for a lovely little old table or chair or even an old mirror in your bathroom my advice is...go for it!

Oh and while we're on the subject of furnishing bathrooms - I also love little paintings in bathrooms too!!

Alright ready. I know, I know. I always seem to be on semi-permanent hiatus from my blog. Well I got ton of things on my mind, namely getting my website updated. I believe, as of today, the index page is still announcing the NSS in May 2008. Nice. I should point out that on page 90 of Craft Inc, I wrote that you should "Update your site frequently with news or new products." And clearly, I am leading by example. I also tell people to always have their business cards on them, yet I am always writing my contact information on the backsides of other people's business cards when I meet them. I'm awesome like that.

Ironically, next week you'll find me on as a guest blogger on design*sponge. Obviously, have the time and energy to blog, just not on my own blog.

As for the above cookbook, "The Abundant Table: Recipes from the Bishop's Ranch Kitchen", which I illustrated, is finally out. So far I've made the pancakes (hey, I'm starting off easy) and they are delicious! I can't wait to try out the rest of their healthy recipes. And I have to say that Laura Crookston Deleot, the graphic designer, did a wonderful job! Such a pleasure working with her. Here are a couple of images from the book:

i'm a little slow on the announcement band wagon for spreading the word on a story of tragedy and incredible human compassion for one of our fellow blogging friends. this is a story that has stuck with me all week ~ i can't stop thinking about it actually, so i am sorry for being late on bringing this up on studio wellspring ~ but it's not too late for it to be useful.
a lovely woman and delightful blogger, stephanie nielson and her husband christian were in a very serious plane crash last week. they are a young couple with four children under the age of six. they are in critical condition with a very long & very expensive recovery ahead of them. stephanie has third degree burns covering 80% of her body and christian has third degree burns over 30% of his body. the outreach to help them has been so inspirational, and you can be a part of it too! online auctions are all over the blogiverse to help them with the expenses and there's a fund you can contribute to directly as well.

The Modern House with a Soul II

Remember when I told you about this house that I fell in love with on the Modern Atlanta House Tour? Apparently Metropolitan Home found the house as well*. Their photographer Mali Azima provided pictures of it that are far superior to the ones I took on my iPhone! While they have some great shots of the branch chandelier and the folk art collection, they did not show the mask wall! I am not finding this spread on PointClickHome as of yet, so to check it out, you’ll have to buy the December issue and turn to page 134. UPDATE! It’s up, just click here to check it out over at pointclickhome. There was another interesting article written about the home you can check out for free in Creative Loafing.

To see more work by the home’s owner/architects Cara Cummins and Jose Tavel, check out their firm’s website at TaCStudios.com. Also, many of the self-taught artists whose work you see in the home are represented at one of my very favorite spots in Georgia, Around Back at Rocky’s Place.

*I’m trying to remember if Met Home was a sponsor of the tour; I am 99% sure that they were, but the Modern Atlanta website is down at the moment so I cannot confirm. UPDATE: Yes, Met Home was a sponsor, and the MA website is back up! Personally, I prefer a house tour such as this one to one “Idea House.” I think it provides a magazine with so much more to share with their readers. I’m sure an idea house probably helps the magazine strike deals with advertisers, and in the already overcrowded shelter mag category this is likely crucial to help them stay alive (O At Home is the latest one to bite the dust), but the feeling of one big advertising spread is apparent in a lot of Idea Home pages.

New Baby New House

A lot of wonderful things are happening to me these days. A blessing baby is on his way and with it the need for a bigger house. So we just purchased a house with this incredible view of New York City in New Jersey. This view is in every floor of the house. This may be the only perfect thing about the house since there are many things to be updated. Walls will come down, kitchen will be completely redone, floors will be refinished. I decided to make it fun and I'll be posting every milestone.


Here I decided to take down half of the wall so we can appreciate the beautiful view from the kitchen, while leaving some countertop space. The wall behind also will come down.


Here, all cabinets and appliances have been teared down.

I don't get mad too often, but this is the kind of behavior that is so disrespectful I can't help but get upset. Luckily, I received 2 emails today from readers telling me they saw my 'ABC KIDS print' photos being used on an Etsy store. I had someone write to Etsy this morning on my behalf letting them know my images were being used without my consent. Not to mention, technically stealing my design & descriptions. We as artists/designers work hard at what we do, so when someone thinks its ok to do this, we need to make sure they know its not! I tried looking for Etsy's phone number but had no luck. As of right now we've asked the seller to cease and desist as well as filed a complaint against the seller. I wonder if the other art/images in their Etsy shop are being used without permission. This is the link to their shop. All I ask is that you 'do not buy' from them, because they are breaking the law and cannot be trusted. Thank you.

*UPDATE: The seller has written me an email, stating they thought the images belonged to someone else. I don't get it? Does that make it right? It seems they removed their shop. The name of their shop was 'Bella Bub' (items for babies).
**UPDATE 9/16: Apparently this person has more then one shop, a blogger just informed me the shop is still up at this other Etsy address, you'll notice if you click on their sold items, they sold 3 posters with my design using my images. So far they have removed my images, we'll see if they try to add them again. Their shop here.

Hi everyone,
Just a quick update on upcoming move. So much to do and so little time. Our move in date is June 2, and I have been pretty overwhelmed with the years of accumulation that have to be boxed and sorted and of course we will be having the expected garage sale. I have also been doing some furniture shopping and lots of browsing looking for inspiration like the gorgeous lanterns I found on Gumps today. Will try to check in with some of my finds as we count down to the big move. It's going to be sporadic here at Kstyle until we settle in so thank you in advance for your patience. k

Just popping in to say hello to all of you who are still dropping by. It is so tempting to post as my design radar is still alive and well. I just don't dare go there right now. BUT I want you to know I really miss my blog.

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement for my mother. She is holding her own although it is really one day at a time for her and for us. I am also involved in a huge design project for my oldest son who lives in Mexico and has started a relatively new endeavor there. I have showed you the logo I designed for him but now we are adding a fullscale website and it has been a monumental task.

I hope to finish this project in the next few weeks and then I would hope to be able resume Kstyle. Thank you all for staying with me and know that I really miss participating in the design blogging community. When I can I will be back. Take care and talk soon,k

Hi everyone,

I apologize for not posting for so long and in response to those who have voiced their concern about "K" and the future of kstyle here is an update.

All is well on the homefront. The move is behind us and life is in full swing. I miss blogging and hope to get back to it although I do have the need to shake it up and reinvent to keep my creative juices flowing. But the real issue for me right now is focus and time and a boy named Troy known to many of you as "waterboy". He is in his senior year and simply put I don't want to miss it. I know from previous children how fast it will go and how soon this layer of my life will change. And I am willing to wait on other things so that I can fully savor this last hurrah that I will know as mom of a kid still at home.

So we are knee deep in water polo tournamnets, senior projects, GIRLS, driving and of course everything else assosciated with a seventeen year old son. I've told my friends, family and now you my blogging friends that we are hatching an adult and this needs to be my focus right now and bottom line I want to be present for the experience.

So everyone I will be back in some way down the road and know that even though I'm not commenting right now I am keeping up with my blogging friends and the blogging world. Take care and talk soon

A Little Motivation

This lovely image puts me in the mood to start addressing holiday cards. (Note the Chiang Mai Dragon curtains?) The picture appears in the November/December Southern Accents, accompanying a nice story written by Beaty Coleman: Season's Greetings. Christmas card history is covered along with tips for sending tasteful notes. It's a good one to clip and save.


A few days ago I shared some favorite sources and bourbon-related presents from my Lexington friend, Cameron (a.k.a. "Carson"). Now I realize this sounds suspiciously similar to Jane Scott Hodges' gift suggestions featured on page 24 of Southern Accents. Jane Scott and Cameron are old family friends, so perhaps they are on the same wave length.


Another source that Jane Scott mentions is Sucre. Be sure to check out their mouth-watering seasonal offerings, and grab a copy of SA's holiday issue for many more ideas. (Hanukkah inspiration too!)

Another must-read this season: the December Western Interiors. Mrs. Blandings generously reminded me that both a favorite designer, Peter Dunham, and a favorite beverage, Coke, are highlighted in a pretty holiday spread. Although the setting is a bit posh, Dunham has injected a signature touch of whimsy -- the old-fashioned Coke bottles with sterling silver straws. Delightful. I've got to duplicate this.
