spoonflower power

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: studio wellspring
my friend, tom, sent over a link to a wonderful concept company that's still in its beta form ~ spoonflower. thanks to a group of inspired folks in chapel hill, north carolina, spoonflower is an answer to a huge void in the crafter-designer-artist market: giving us all the ability to design and make our very own fabric. yes! for a reasonable price you can have your very own designs printed onto fabric. how wonderful is that?!? all you have to do is create a design, make it into a tif file, and send it off to spoonflower to print onto 44" 100% kona® cotton fabric {a 2nd choice of fabric will be available soon}.
from their website: "spoonflower exists to give crafters a powerful tool for expressing their creative visions using fabric. it gives individuals the power to print their own designs on fabric that they can then use to make quilts, clothes, pillows, blankets, framed textile art and many, many other things that might surprise you."
they have a nice little blog and a great flickr group.
i snagged some of my favorite projects from their flickr group to share with & inspire you here:

More Gumdale House

11/07/2008, 10:04 | Original Site: absolutely beautiful things
This is the family/casual dining area {above & below}. We used white painted Chippendale dining chairs which we upholstered in a navy & white ticking.

This is a little area at the base of the staircase which we had panelled.

These are the drapes in the Main Bedroom. We purchased the Antique French timber chandelier from a dealer in Melbourne.

A pretty little section of the kitchen {above & below}.

This is an area in the Master Bathroom. We sourced the antique mirror for the client and had it painted white. I love how the mirror itself is yellowing with age. I told the client she needs to get some pretty little vases with fresh flowers and some little tea light candles and put them on the little shelves on the mirror!!

Well it seems another week has gotten the better of me!! I can't believe it's the weekend already!!

To end this week I thought I would share some more pictures of the Gumdale House with you as it progresses. We are still working on the finishing touches so once they are all done I'll be sure to post lots of images of the entire house.

I would like to note that I worked on this job with the client from frame stage. We performed our full interior design and decorating service on this home. Throughout the project I worked very closely with the client as she had many ideas of her own and provided an excellent brief. Specifically I provided specifications for tile selection and layout, cabinetry design, cabinetry handle selection, paint colours, architrave & cornice selection, internal door design, tapware selection, decorative lighting selection and other general finishes. The client has taken only a few pieces of her old furniture into the home with the rest either sourced or custom made and designed by myself with the client.

I spent an hour with the client this afternoon and I finally got to sit down in one of the beautiful armchairs and look at everything we had achieved. It's just such a lovely feeling looking at your work, being proud of it and having a very happy client. That's the most important thing of all....having a happy client!!

Happy Weekend!!

Passionate About Lampwork

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: k style
Spent a tiny bit of time browsing my favorite category on Ebay and look what I found. I love the contemporary take on this lampworked heart and you can go here to bid on it right now. Hey guys, what a perfect valentine's day present for your sweetie.
On another note my posts maybe a bit sporadic next week as I have a lot going on including the fact that it is finals time again for '"waterboy" and that always means of flurry of last minute cramming and usually a few papers which need to be "edited' and "fine-tuned". talk soon, k

Ready To Go-Go?

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Bluelines

While the biggest music release of the season will be Coldplay's Viva La Vida, it's not exactly the kind of album that will prompt non-stop dancing and fun at your summer party.

For that, you will want something that moves and sways. Chuck Brown is a perfect good-time starter.

51fyfpdvbkl_ss500_

Known as the "Godfather of Go-Go" (a musical mix of funk, R&B, and hip-hop), Chuck is over 70 and still pumping out exuberant, swaggering songs.

You won't regret picking up a classic like "Do You Know What Time It Is" along with extra ice and bug candles.

What gets your party started?

Thomas Jayne Studio is a New York based design firm consisting of some very creative individuals. Their style is traditional, but with quirky touches in artwork, unexpected punches of colour, and distinctive furnishings. "...traditional and classic tenets can be seen and utilized in new ways. Hence, the Studio’s designers take inspiration from the past, but seek new meaning and relevancy in it. The rooms they create are grounded in tradition but feel original and modern in their outlook."

Guest Blogging this week

If you're looking for me this week, I'm guest blogging the whole week on design*sponge--and writing more posts there than I have in the past three months combined I might add!

Also, I've gotten some inquiries on this: if you're wondering where to buy Craft Inc. because it's apparently sold out at Chronicle Books and Amazon, here are some other retailers that currently still have them in stock (for now): Reform School and Fred Flare.

I also don't know when they are expecting to receive more books but I'm sure it will be soon!

Biker Dog

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: k style
Hey kstylers,
Just had to share photojournalists latest doggie shot. This was a vender at the Art n Bloom show in Medford and he had a "closet" full of biker dogwear for sale. I love the sunglasses. Talk about a "hip" dog. Things are very busy in my life right now. Waterboy is off to Annapolis Naval Academy for a national water polo tournament, the photojournalist's longtime girlfriend is arriving permamently from Mexico on Saturday and we have boxes piled up everywhere for the move in two weeks. So be patient. Will be fun showing the new house and decorating projects. We just need to get through the next few weeks. Hope all is well with you. talk soon, k

Quite the Colorful Family

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: Bluelines

It comes as no surprise to us that our talented blogger Scott Horne would have an equally creative and gifted sibling.

Ken Horne, brother to Scott, studied drawing, painting, and photography in Los Angeles, London, Burlington, and Denver, where he now maintains a studio.

Because his day job as a child welfare social worker often brings him face-to-face with dark scenarios, Ken infuses his art with light and color.

The artist is inspired by nature, society, and modern design. Ken constantly explores and experiments with line, form, balance, and color.

But, enough from us. Let his stunning work tell the story.

See How They Wrap

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Tastemakers Stiles T. Colwill and Jonathan Gargiulo tell Southern Accents that their holiday prep begins the week before Thanksgiving. One of their many activities includes assembling gifts to be wrapped in the guesthouse dining room. Reading this, I wondered how other artists, editors, and designers wrap their holiday presents. So I did a little investigating.

Those oh-so-creative sisters, Hollister and Porter Hovey, have a distinct signature style.
Porter explains, "Every year my sister Hollister and I choose a theme for wrapping our gifts. One year it was a nature theme with little nests and birds we bought at the craft store. In more recent years we've stuck with black wrapping paper with either gold or black ribbon. It's a classic look and makes everything from the summer sausages we get our grandpa to the perfect vintage ebay finds look so elegant."
This year, to be a little green, the duo will cut up the big roll of seamless black studio paper that Porter, who is a photographer, bought for her last project. "I always go with the idea that bigger is better, but I went with a roll that was 10 feet wide! We'll be wraping each black package with twine, twigs and pine sprigs!"

The black grosgrain is available through Kate's Paperie, and I found the image of the black craft paper on Amazon.

Stay tuned for more ideas from other stylish people. You'll notice a real emphasis on thrift. And that leads me to a point I want to make about the presents I've been posting recently: most of the ribbon is recycled. I enjoy art supply stores the way other women like shoe boutiques, and I do add each year to my collection of paper and trims, but I have a small number of packages to wrap. All of the ribbon on gifts to my family comes back to me for use the next year!

Atlanta's Big Read

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Remember this past post about Francis Cugat's Art Deco work that was used for the original 1925 cover of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby? I thought of it when I heard about The Literary Center's Big Read.

Atlantans ages 12 to 112 are encouraged to read Fitzgerald's acclaimed book -- as an individual or with others -- between now and June 2009. A variety of Gatsby-related events including film screenings and performances will take place in coming months. The $10 edition of the book would make a great stocking stuffer too. Christmas House (Part III)

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Millie (Brilliant Asylum) says she is tempted to buy this headboard as a Christmas present for herself. Judy Bentley designed it for one of the bedrooms at the recently opened Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Christmas House. And Santa could in fact bring the headboard to Millie because it is for sale, along with all the other items shown here, raising funds for the Alliance Children's Theatre.

The origins of the main geometric fabric used throughout the room --"Maze" in blue from Zoffany-- can be traced back to a 19th-century print in the fabric house's archive. It's interesting how geometrics feel modern and unfussy, even when they are centuries-old. Classic blue-and-white bedrooms have also been around forever, but the print Bentley chose here is a change of pace from the toile commonly seen in them.

The stripes on the floor add a certain crispness too. If you are thinking about having a headboard, chair or bedding custom made, Bentley has provided many pretty details to study.

She embraced a chinoiserie motif and ran with it. To learn more about chinoiserie, click here.

If you plan to be in Atlanta anytime between now and December 7th, you can check out this room, and many others, in person. Click here for more information.

Here's another view of "Maze" in blue from Zoffany.

Just like many of you, I've also visited 'The Selby' and admire Todd's work. If I wasn't from New York City, I'd probably think many of the homes featured, were just plain WEIRD. But, since I lived in NYC for so many years, many of the homes featured look very similar to friend's places I used to frequent. So, here are some of my favorite photos by Todd Selby. Enjoy!

See How They Wrap IV

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
We wouldn't expect anything less than super-chic, earth-friendly gift wrap from Rubie Green founder Michelle Adams. This year, her presents are covered in natural fiber papers from Kate's Paperie (the two in the foreground) and in paper from Loop (grey package in background). Loop uses FSC certified paper and soy inks. Of course, Michelle has used scraps of her own RG fabrics for the wonderful bows.

BTW: The stripe "ribbon" is Michelle's "Delavan," named for her former colleague, domino's very cool editor-at-large, Tom Delavan.

All gift wrap photography by Patrick Cline.

Reminder: If you prefer not to shop the day after Thanksgiving, consider a visit to Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Christmas House. For a festive and educational family day, visit the High.

The Abundant Table

07/31/2008, 16:01 | Original Site: designer's library

Cover_72dpi

Alright ready. I know, I know. I always seem to be on semi-permanent hiatus from my blog. Well I got ton of things on my mind, namely getting my website updated. I believe, as of today, the index page is still announcing the NSS in May 2008. Nice. I should point out that on page 90 of Craft Inc, I wrote that you should "Update your site frequently with news or new products." And clearly, I am leading by example. I also tell people to always have their business cards on them, yet I am always writing my contact information on the backsides of other people's business cards when I meet them. I'm awesome like that.

Ironically, next week you'll find me on as a guest blogger on design*sponge. Obviously, have the time and energy to blog, just not on my own blog.

As for the above cookbook, "The Abundant Table: Recipes from the Bishop's Ranch Kitchen", which I illustrated, is finally out. So far I've made the pancakes (hey, I'm starting off easy) and they are delicious! I can't wait to try out the rest of their healthy recipes. And I have to say that Laura Crookston Deleot, the graphic designer, did a wonderful job! Such a pleasure working with her. Here are a couple of images from the book:

new home

00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: let your creativity .... FLOW

image from livemodern.com

we're moving november 1st.
ed has given me free range over the design of our condo - however, we're on a very tight budget and whatever i decide to do can not be a permanent thing. we're only going to be here for a couple of years but as i see it, for those years i want to live in a space that i find comfort and relaxation in. i want it to be a home. our home.

so this will be my first "rental" budget re-design. i plan on using our space to get more low budget clients and even clients living in rental units for fast and quick fix-me-ups. after all every challenge is an opportunity.

there are 2 things i definitely want to incorporate in the space. first, a black wall and second a white fireplace mantel. the black wall i'm thinking of putting up in our dining area. we have 1 large wall in the dining room which is hidden from the rest of the house unless you walk into the dining area that i would love to paint black against a row of black and white photographs. the white manel fireplace i want to fill with chopped wood and place on one of the walls in the living room which filters into a sun room which is surrounded by floor to ceiling windows which makes the entire space feel very much like a loft.

one of my passions when it comes to designing is mixing vintage with modern. luckly i've been able to work with clients who have the same love of design as myself.
