Madame Butterfly at the Met!
11/21/2008, 15:00 | Original Site: ::Surroundings::Sara Krulwich/The New York Times

I'm so excited as tomorrow I'm heading off to NYC with my friend Rob to hear Madama Butterfly at the Met! Several years ago I played in the orchestra for a local production. But... The Met! I wrote about the newly refurbished Swarovski chandeliers a couple of months ago and I now I get to see them in all their dazzling brilliance in person!
I'm also very excited to see the work of world renowned set designer Michael Levine. Michael has designed sets and costumes for major opera companies in North America and Europe including Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Vienna State Opera, and Paris Opera. Levine received his early training at the Ontario College of Art in his native Toronto and London?s Central School of Art and Design. His many awards include a Gemini award for Best Production Design for the movie September Songs, Paris Critics? Prize for Britten?s Midsummer Night?s Dream at Aix en Provence, and Edinburgh Festival Music and Arts award for the Canadian Opera Company?s production of Bluebeard?s Castle/Erwartung.
Here are some images from the 2006 Met production, courtesy of Seen and Heard International.

The role of Butterfly's 3 yr. old son was played by a puppet, handled in the Japanese Banraku puppetry tradition of direct manipulation of head and body parts by puppeteers.
And here is a fun little montage I pulled together in anticipation of my adventure! I love the Fornasetti Opera dishes!

A Fantasy Movie Set
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: The Peak of ChicOn a whim, I decided to play set decorator and throw together a fantasy 1930s bedroom. I think Carole Lombard would look quite smart in this bedroom. I don't envision Joan Crawford in it though. I hear she was quite the rounder, and my pristine bedroom set might end up in shambles!

How about these velvet roman shades from Pottery Barn? White and grey were de rigeur back in the 1930s (and still are in my book!), and the velvet provides just the right amount of sheen. Shine, shimmer, and gleam are very important when one is designing a decadent boudoir!
And of course you've got to have some satin and silk, such as these quilted silk throws from Schweitzer Linen. I'd use either the cream or white.
I would have to find some place for Jonathan Adler's Montmartre table, because you have to have some type of Neoclassical element in the room. Or maybe you need a few...
...in which case I would use the Athena stencil and paint this Greek motif on every door in the room.
This acrylic pedestal from Richman Design would look fabulous in a corner with some type of urn on top. Perhaps a ceramic one with lilies in it? Or, what about an alabaster urn lamp?
I might use this old Western Electric rotary phone, but I would prefer it in white. If you're going to schedule social engagements or liaisons, you really should do it in style.
The leading lady would have to wear the appropriate attire for such a room. No flannel pjs!! But we wouldn't want our leading lady to dress (or undress) like Gypsy Rose Lee either, so this robe is glamorous but tasteful too.
Keep in mind that the next time you're on television or in a movie, your eyes will really stand out if you use false eyelashes. And as long as we're going with the glamour theme, what about these feather lashes from shu uemura.

Stalagmites and Stalactites in the California Caves in the Gold Country
2) I love the extremes, like:
Mt. Whitney, the highest Peak in the contiguous United States
Death Valley, The lowest place on earth, and the hottest in the United States
The Redwood Trees, the biggest trees on earth
Lake Tahoe, the biggest Alpine Lake in the United States
3) I love the varied architecture and architects, like:
Frank Lloyd Wright's Walker Residence in Carmel
Greene and Greene's Gamble House in Pasadena (where I grew up), a prime example of Bungalow Style Architecture
Frank Gehry's Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles
4) I love that we can do all this within a few hours drive:
Horseback ride in the Mammoth Mountains in the Eastern Sierras
Fish at Lake George
Cross Country Ski in Bear Valley
Play wave tag in Newport Beach
Hang out at the beach in Laguna
5) I love that California has a Cuisine named after it and world famous wine country:
Alice Waters, co-founder of the esteemed restaurant, Chez Panisse, in Berkeley, California is usually credited with originating "California Cuisine". The emphasis on using fresh ingredients in season grown by local farms garnered her reputation as the proprietress of one of the top 50 restaurants in the world.

Then there is the Napa Valley, or what I like to call "the Valley of the Gods". It is stunningly beautiful and produces some of the best wine in the world.
OK....that is my five things.
But, as much as I have tried, I cannot wittle it down to five. I have to add:
What would we do without it?
California, the home of The Happiest Place on Earth

Atlanta's Big Read
00/00/0000, 00:00 | Original Site: style court
Remember this past post about Francis Cugat's Art Deco work that was used for the original 1925 cover of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby? I thought of it when I heard about The Literary Center's Big Read. Atlantans ages 12 to 112 are encouraged to read Fitzgerald's acclaimed book -- as an individual or with others -- between now and June 2009. A variety of Gatsby-related events including film screenings and performances will take place in coming months. The $10 edition of the book would make a great stocking stuffer too. Dazzling acrylic paintings by Brandy Saturley of Sol Sugar Designs here in Victoria... I showcased some of her colourful, curvaceous pieces from her Toe collection awhile back.Literally a neighbour of mine (James Bay... yah!!), Brandy's art is incredibly vibrant and full of exquisite detail. She is inspired by the ocean and the colour blue which resonates as a dance of rigorous patterns throughout her pieces. So lively and whimsical... I adore her work.

Modern Economy Online Sample Sale - October 8 and 9
09/28/2008, 10:03 | Original Site: designer's library Sorry, I've been away from this blog. The biggest thing coming up is Modern Economy's (first ever) Online Sale starting Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 9:00 AM (PST).
After getting many requests to bring this sale to cities everywhere, I figured the best thing is just to put practically the entire sale online to give everyone a taste of what our sales are like. As usual, everything will be up to 80% off. Although this is a sample sale, much of our merchandise is first quality overstock. And just like our regular city-based sales, it's only for a limited time. Originally, I had planned for it to be 24-hour sale, but I've extended it another day. This sale is now only 48-hours long. So arrive early to our website for the best selection!
And join our mailing list, too. Individuals on our list will get special privileges and will also be entered in a drawing to win $200 in merchandise.
